Remedy for Trich? (for you pro's) 1

I just followed some links to mycotopia and read this little blurb in relation to straw tek but if it's true should work for casings no?
"Trichoderma (green mold) loves the acidic end of the PH scale, and it's presence indicates you need to raise the alkali, which is easy to do with horticultural lime. This is readily available in the garden center of your local hardware store. Mix a teaspoon or so of lime into a spraybottle and mist the bed with this. Trich recedes rapidly under this treatment."
Anybody have experience with this?

I'd say it would be good for preventative maintenance. I don't know if it will help much if the Trich is already established. But then again I wouldn't consider myself a 'pro' either ;)

Perhaps this should have been asked on the advanced board. From the wording above it sounds as if it is used on the established trich. I don't know if it would be a good idea to just spray that on a casing if it didn't have it. My friend put too much lime in a casing recently and it scared the shit out of the myc and it didn't want to come out at all.

Once Thricoderma strikes, I find it difficult to contain or treat it and so do most other people. There are a few that have used such things as lime, baking soda, or gypsum to bring the ph up thus making it more inhospitable to trich.Unfortunately, the truth is that all these measures usually just slow it down and eventually it often over takes the casing or cake. See the problem is that trichoderma mycelium is bright white and easy to confuse with mushroom mycelium. It turns green at maturity at which time it has already spread. Sometimes you can slow it down enough to allow the current flush to mature. From my experience once you see the green is only a matter of time until the project is done for. Some folks do have sucess fighting it off,but most do not.
So the trick is to avoid it in the first place. You are correct most competitor molds and Trichoderma love an acidic ph.Trich loves a ph of 4.5- 6.0. When you make you casing if you do not bufffer it, your ph will be very low. This acidic enviroment will be very welcoming to contaminants. So you need to raise ph of your casing to a ph of 7.0-7.5. You do this by adding dehydrated lime or gympsum to the casing materials before wetting it. With proper ph in your casing and god air exchange you will have less chance of getting hit by the mean green. It is also important to remove pieces of wood out of the casing when you are dealing with peat. The wood pieces tend to contaminate. Here's a recipe that works for a friend of mine.
In reply to:
to 100 grams of sifted peat use 3grams powdered gypsum and 25grams Hydrated lime ,
"mix well" in a bag(shake it) "before" wetting this will give you a peat that is at 7.0 or just above, you can also add a bit of some crushed oyster shell to help with the pH
you need to pastureize for sure or sterilize if you want
ive done both and they both work fine for me
So, in answer to your question yes raising the ph is the method for treating trich outbreaks.Does spraying as you stated work? It could work in some cases I'm sure. In cases where the contaminant is already spread through the center of your substrate, it is probably not effective. They don't call it the mean green for nothing. I find that often when treated with lime etc, it recedes, but only to come back meaner than before.

Thanks Olgualion. Does trichoderma release toxins? Most people have no problems eating mushies off trich casings. However, sometimes it is hard tell what type of green mold you are really dealing with. Some people are allergic to penicillin. Penicillin mold is green. So, a person that has a PCN(penicillin) allergy could have a really bad reaction eating something that came from an infected casing. So, for those allergic to PCN, I would say to stay away from any contaminated casings. After my last experience I will probably never eat anything off an infected casing again.
I ate some mushies from a casing that had some green mold on it. Mistake. Iam not allergic to penicillin. Anyhow, I had an allergic reaction. What ever it was it just caused intense itching all over and coughing. Needless to say it was a very unpleasant little trip. I had done the same thing years ago and had no problems. I will never do it again. Nothing like an allergic reaction to ruin a trip. I'm prone to allergies though.

ive gotten 3 full fluhes after contamiation of green mold, ts like fihting cacer with a spoon and peroxide, you really cant et rid of it tho, you just ight it and hope for as much growth as possible befo you finall loos the battle
in the future th, knowig what i learned here i will put extra jime in the casings. a frien told me peat is goo because it has a low PH, i told him mold probably does well in hat, but he dissaggreed, it feels god to be right :) my more peat based casings always go quicker.into mold county

Green mold from Penicillin is easy distinguishable from Trichodermia, it is very, very bright lime green, trichodermia deep green in color...A good rule is, if a mushroom has grown and fruited looks healthy inside and out it is probly fine..Cobweb mold can make a mushroom twist and fold under , but many people eat those as well....I say to beat an established trichodera mold you need to try to nip it in the bud, throw half a casing away if you have to ect. You can use heat also as heat will kill any bacteria......Using a mini butane torch you can seal off an area that has been removed of trich....Also I have seen a friend spray pure rubbing alcohol on top of a casing and light it burning the top layer and leaving no chemicals behind....More hints are avoid trich in the first place by keeping a clean area, turning off fans and heat/air before dealing with projects, take a shower before casing or innoculating, or use lotion to help hold spores onto your body before chancing contamination...........

Mitchnast, peroxide will only kill cobweb mold, not trich thought I would point that out, also if your using a spoon try heating up the spoon each time before you scoop or dip it in alcohol not hydrogen peroxide...Good Luck

tdrogen peroxide is not for klling the mold but rather killing spores that may be present, i just scoop mold out then drench the casin in a nice sizzleing dose of H202.
maybe a potassium permagnate solution would kill off green mold?
ive had penicillin before too, thats shit spreads FAST! but i bet it ould kill off any other contams. so perhaps a pasturized collection of penicillium mould made into a solution and sprayed on the border where the chuk of casing was removed would provide the antibiological properties nesisary to inhibit green mold gemanation? its a theory, maybe next time someone gets a blue green contam they coud try it on a green mold containated cake? :)
fightn fire with fire.

I wonder wether you could use a dilute Iodine solution? I use it regularly for disinfecting, and it's used by surgeons...
EDIT: Just been pointed out that this thread is a long time dead, not sure how I managed to resurrect it....

You were linked from this thread. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10271482 This just goes to show that a bunch of things have already been tested. If you search around I think iodine has been as well. Never hurts to try and innovate though.

Iodine also kills mushroom mycelium. The cure for trichoderma is to carefully toss it out into the garden area. If there's viable mushroom mycelium in the mix, it will often recover outdoors and you'll get a fruiting if the weather conditions are favorable. You can't 'cut out' or 'save' a project from trich. The trich spores will be released by the trillions into your grow area, contaminating future projects. RR
