can I beat the mold with an outdoor terrarium?
    #1044364 - 11/11/02 08:37 PM (14 years, 25 days ago)

My first casings each have one or two spots of nasty green mold on top. Surface area of the green bastard is no greater than half an inch square area. Another casing probably has cobweb mold. Yech. Haste makes waste indeed.

I'd like to at least try saving these and have read that fresh air and being outdoors can help eliminate mold infections. Thinking about a small terrarium outside on the porch to heal and house these through maturity....

Is this possible? or Is there a better solution? (ie maybe bury them under some leaves in the forest???)

The outdoor terrarium I am thinking about would be a plastic tub with a wire mesh top (to keep the clean air flowing and the bugs out). The moldy casings would be placed inside the open-air tub on a light layer of damp perlite. Heating for proper pinning temperature would be attempted via a heating pad underneath the plastic tub (I am aware of the fire risks associated with heating pads and will take precautions).

thanks in advance!

** I made a similar post in the contam forum already but I think this might be the better location

Try it, you have nothing but a couple of spots of trich to loose. Humidity may be hard to maintain with a wire mesh top.

Try this on the one infected with the green (trich?) - I used this a week ago and no sign of green.  Take some q-tips, and a bottle of bleach, and load up a tip with the bleach, no dilution, and dab it onto the affected green areas.  Get it all, and change q-tips as you think is needed, slop that bleach on there, just try to keep it local to the green.  Then take a spoon and dig the green out until you cant see it again.  Then give it another go with the q-tip and bleach, lighter this time, on the areas where you dug and the surroundings.  Dont go overboard the second time.

I did this, and the pins that were there still seem to be growing, but I honestly dont know how bad this is for the fungus culture.  I stole the idea from hippie's bleach dunk tek, I just decided to be a prick to the green and lay waste to it in one fell swoop.

Your mileage may vary, my fruits may totally fuck up, but there aint no green anymore

peace

You are a better man than most if you successfully beat the green. Not to knock your method, but I wouldn't be suprised if it showed up again, its a persistent little bitch.

it's not mine, i stole the idea from hippie.

i think the dousing of the spots pre digging is important too, because then it kills the spores that you are going to be launching all over the place inevitably.
