Anyone try to understand the mind warp that is Brexit?
    #25825720 -

God, I researched it and watched a whole John Oliver show on it and I still don't get it.

I actually love the show.  But it is so much like if you grew up there and get the whole IRA, borders, trade wars, and jam it into a 30 minute show.  Holy shit, he did his best to explain it but, wow, no.  That level of things that have been going on for a very long time and try to condense it down.

I have some knowledge of it, but it goes deep and trying to process it all.  Fuck it.  I was enjoying throwing rolled up bread at ducks two days ago drinking beer in the morning on holiday.

It is good to me to get out of this shit for awhile and just enjoy feeding some fucking ducks in a lake.

And for the U.S. people.  Austin isn't liberal.  They say it is strange, no, no it is not.  Your fucking star everywhere to worship.  God.

As far as England, I could do a college paper on it is so complicated coming back from nature and a bit of downtown, and I just wanted to go back to the lake and ducks, lol, It sucks.

So the jist is if Brexit goes into effect after so many votes after votes to have it do so, the pound will drop and local business people will be fucked over and the New World Order and corporations will have a more firm hold.

Whatever, what will be, will be.  Life is interesting and we are all connected on a human level.  Humanity, different story.

Don't feel bad, most of the people that voted for it didn't have any idea what it involved either, not saying I do either but the basics are something like this.

Apart from the trade tariffs that will be slapped on just about everything traded between Britain and the EU if they can't reach some sort of a trade deal, the problem with Northern Ireland's border is the interesting worry.

With Northern Ireland voting to remain part of the EU customs union, goods entering from the Republic of Ireland, the rest of the UK, or abroad, will be subject to EU checks at a 'hard border' = Hard Brexit
If Northern Ireland along with the rest of the U.K. can remain in some form of renegotiated customs agreement with the EU until such a time that all the details have been sorted out there will be no 'hard border' = Soft Brexit.

The problem with a 'hard border' between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is that it could re-ignite tensions again. Anyone who remembers the early 70's would remember the bombings and the street battles.
Northern Ireland was a very dangerous place back then.

I remember a (sick) joke from that time
Q. What's the fastest game on earth?
A. Playing a game of pass the parcel in a Belfast pub.  (Referring to the bombs)

From what I understand, it's simpler than that.

The EU was imposing migrant quotas and laws on England. The kicker? The EU is not a democracy and the leader is German.

Sovereign nation v. Ruled by undemocratic EU.

Ummm respectfully XUL, it's far from simple.

When the U.K. joined the European Single Market in 1992 checks on most goods traded were phased out. Imagine the dog fuck of a problem that is going to
happen now when those customs checks are re-intrOduced with Northern Ireland seperate to the rest of the U.K.?

And that's the tip of the ice-berg, the inter related issues are countless and almost impossible to predict where it will lead.

Companies are already scaling back their workforce's due to uncertainty and investment is falling along with the value of the pound.

Fair enough.

Do you think migrant quotas and being ruled by an unelected majority German EU had anything to do with it?

I sort of get where you're at, yeah, as the EU are refusing to give Theresa May any concession on
the 'hard border' with Northern Ireland, so they are playing hard ball, but it's their game and the U.K. are the ones leaving so...

But why the hell Northern Ireland voted to cause a huge cluster fuck of a problem is beyond me. They must really hate England still??

Jeremy Corben is an opportunistic, obstructionist cunt also, so that isn't helping.

The migrant quota I don't have any idea.

Jeremy Corbens Labour Party have had 8 members 'defect' to form some sort of loose alliance.
3 of Theresa May's conservative party today joined them.

Apparently the Labour defectors had problems with 'anti semitic' statements from Corben.

It'd be good to see someone from the U.K. post to hear more on that.

Regardless of whether I agree with Theresa May I think she has proved to be a very tenacious person/politician and I don't envy her job at all.

This group were elected based on an extremely popular Labour manifesto but they aren't calling a new election. They aren't registering as a party because that means they'd have to follow certain rules like being transparent about their funding. They are some of the more right wing Labour politicians (which in the US you'd probably call communism lol) and frankly Labour supporters (me included) are happy they left. They registered their website in 2015 when Corbyn was made leader, they did their best all this time to get rid of him despite a massive surge of people joining the party because of Corbyn. I hated Labour under the Blair, they sold out the country, took us to war and royally fucked the name Labour used to have as being the party of the working classes.

Corbyn, who has always fought racism - including antisemitism - happens to be pro palestinian rights. in fact I only knew who he was when he went for the leadership because I used to see him all the time at Palestinian solidarity events. He has a long and consistent career. He wants to tax the 1%, nationalise certain industries (with widespread backing) and shut down arms sales to regimes like the saudis and israelis. Because he is pro palestinian rights, a massive smear campaign has been targetting him to such an extreme that some people believe it. That being said, there have been small pockets, examples of people's criticism of Israel that have verged into antisemitic tropes. It can be problematic because it is a documented fact that the Israeli government has undue influence in British politics. There was an undercover documentary on the subject relating both to the UK and US government but even with this evidence, to suggest that Israel has influence is spun as an antisemitic trope of a "jewish conspiracy". Corbyn has condemned antisemitism. The MPs that resigned claimed it was over antisemitism and brexit but some of them were quoted as dismissing accusation of antisemitism themselves. Some of those involved were also caught on camera dealing with Israeli operatives in the documentary. Documentary is called "the lobby" and its seriously worth a watch - both the UK one and the US. Yes its funded by Al Jazeera English so I know some members here will just dismiss it outright but the evidence speaks for itself.

If you have specific questions I can try to answer them. In the mean time are a couple of things to check out.

THIS has some details about each of the initial MPs who left the party

Obviously you can see I'm biased towards Corbyn but let me know if I can try to answer anything for you.

One particularly interesting thing I found is that Chuka Umunna is saying they would call for Brexit to be cancelled. There are many people supportive of this but since they aren't actually a party running candidates, I'm not sure what would really come of that. Perhaps more will join them. Personally I think the Labour party is better for it now they've left but the country is extremely divided right now and cancelling Brexit is certainly attractive.

Personally I believe its a mistake when Labour supporters outright dismiss antisemitism. Its more than a smear that has been blown out of proportions, but it exists.. Even if it exists less in Labour than in wider society...

For the record I was open to leaving the EU but voted remain because I saw that my own personal left wing brexit vision was not going to happen. There were a million promises that contradicted eachother so it was always set up for a disaster. No one will get the brexit they wanted, and many don't want it anymore.

Hey thanks for the detailed post from on the ground Tipote and for balancing my perspective/comments on Corbyn.

He actually sounds reasonable with some of that policy. Populist politics always sound good but whether they are achievable is usually the problem.

What's your take on the major obstacles confronting Theresa May that needs to be agreed upon by Labour and the Tories to avoid the U.K. crashing out of the EU customs union? Or are there too many? Is a deal even possible with the EU's refusal to budge on the Northern Ireland problem?

The major obstacle is that her opponents both internal and external know that they can continue to blow up the process for political purposes.

This is no deal she will be able to put in front of the parliament that will be accepted.

Its going to get real messy.

Corbyn may end up going back to the people.
The adults in the room never wanted this.

Thanks mate.

For me the main thing is that Corbyn has stayed consistent throughout his entire career. He didn't get into politics to actually be PM like other soulless fucks, he wanted to represent his community. And he is the kind of leader that listens and follows the lead of the people but maintains his principles. Even recently he has come out saying that a British woman who went to join da'esh at 15 to get married should not have her citizenship stripped. I'd say most people are instantly jeering and cheering her rights being stripped in spite of the fact that it affects everyone's rights too.

About Theresa May, I believe there is too much to overcome and she isn't willing to bend, her deal is shit but if everyone keeps voting it down in Parliament then she can blame them for the inevitable no deal. It seems like a big gamble to me. She is playing a game of chicken (IMO) to keep bringing her deal to parliament until MPs vote for that rather than no deal.

Personally I think the only way of moving forward is with an election. JC has been speaking to the EU and the EU said they would be open to renegotiation if there was a change of mandate ie if there was an election. I dont see a solution to the NI situation... it is likely to give us more IRA attacks. There was a carbomb in NI not long ago.

Understandably the EU don't want to give some magical deal to the UK that is better than membership, otherwise everyone will want it and the EU would collapse. the EU sees the UK as fucking insane because the UK had one of the best positions in the EU, paying less than countries like Italy.. but the truth is, I dont think the establishment thought Leave would win. It was only done to keep the conservative party splitting over it. right wing UKIP leader Farage pushed for a referendum and Tories were leaving to join UKIP. David Cameron did it to make everyone happy and it blew up in his fucking stupid face.. and then he resigned (the cock).

So yeah.. this isn't going to be fun.

I think maybe another general election - maaaaaybe a second referendum - but the fascists won't like it and they are definitely winning the culture wars and getting more violent.. here and everywhere .

going to bed, catch you lot another time
