Brit's change their minds.
    #1405708 -

Actually I'm surprised by this.

---------------
Poll: British Now Support Blair

Support for war in Iraq has turned around sharply, a new poll for the London Times reveals. It shows that 56 percent of people now think America and Britain are right to take military action, with 36 percent opposed.

This is a mirror image of the position before the war, when a similar YouGov poll showed 36 percent backing military action and 57 percent opposed.

Support for the war is stronger among men than women, but is shared across all age groups. Labour and Conservative supporters back the war by two to one. Only Liberal Democrat supporters are opposed, in line with their party?s official position.

The war is also seen as being of benefit to the world. By 45 pecent to 35 percent, people believe it will make the world a safer place.

The expectation is that the war itself will be short. More than two-thirds, 70 percent, say it will be a brief campaign, although 39 percent think there will be heavy casualties.

Tony Blair?s conduct of the crisis is gaining support, following initial public opposition. More than a third, 36 percent, say their admiration for the prime minister has increased because of the way he has handled the Iraq crisis in recent weeks, against 29 percent who say their respect has diminished.

The Need for War

Most of those surveyed, 59 percent, say they saw the prime minister?s address to the nation on Thursday evening, when he set out his reasons for going to war. By three to one, 27 percent to 8 percent, people said they were more convinced of the need for war by the broadcast, with the rest unmoved by it.

People are also unhappy about the wave of protests by schoolchildren in the past few days. Fewer than a quarter, 24 percent, believe pupils have a right to protest at any time. Nearly two-thirds, 63 percent, think teachers should have kept the children in school.

The political threat to Blair appears to be fading, with little enthusiasm for any of his potential successors in the cabinet. Gordon Brown tops the list, with 24 percent support in the event of Blair stepping down, followed by Robin Cook, 9 percent, Jack Straw, 7 percent, and David Blunkett, 6 percent. Most favored none of the prime minister?s likely replacements as leader.

Blair is seen as more sincere than George Bush over rebuilding Iraq and pursuing the Israel-Palestine peace process. By 72 percent to 19 percent, people say he is sincere about reconstructing Iraq for its people, against 51 percent to 35 percent for the U.S. president. On finding a solution to the Israel-Palestine problem, people say by 68 percent to 18 percent that Blair will push for peace, compared with 41 percent to 39 percent who think Bush will.

Asked whether Bush will pursue war against other countries such as North Korea after Iraq, most people think he will. By nearly two to one, 53 percent to 27 percent, they predict the U.S. will target other nations believed to pose a threat.

Nothing surprising about it. You usually get an increase in public support once your troops are dying on the front line.

that's so scandalous! All they do is punch in numbers into a computer and proclaim "Well look at that Britian, more than half of you support the war now mmmmmkay?" It's propaganda to change people's opinions about Blair and the war.

Propaganda this and propaganda that. Damn people not everything is propaganda and remember propaganda comes from both sides. So please try and come up with a better argument than everything is propaganda. Remember that sometimes people are actually telling the truth.

I cant understand how people can think this is beneficial to the world when the majority believes this will be a longer conflict than just iraq!  I mean theres ALOT of evil out there and this warring can only increase conflict and tension in the world powers.  PEACE?!...mabye after 100 years of war and the destruction of modern society.....if that!

Statistics are irrelevant...
What was the sample size?
Was it stratified?
Did the sample population represent census data?
How was the sample selected??

Way too many variables to make an accurate repersentation.

I'm going along with captain. Statistics are HIGHLY unreliable, especially when the target group consists of 500 people in one region (These are how most "National" polls are executed).

I do think that more people are for the war now since it's started though.

If you discard the recent numbers, you must necessarily disregard the previous numbers as well. The two polls were done by the same organization (YouGov) asking the same questions, using the same methods. The only "variable" that has changed is the day on which the questions were asked.

Of course.
statistics provided by the media are rarely any representation of the population.

If you believe this to be the case, then we will of course see no comments from you at any time regarding how many support or oppose the war.

Good! I'm getting mighty sick of the whole "the majority says this" -- "no, the majority says that" arguments posted here a dozen times a day. Glad to see there will be at least two of us who will refrain.

From the analysis Ive seen Id have to agree with Alex. I dont think its the dying so much as the potential for dying that has swung it. I think people are still opposed to the reasoning behind the war but are supporting it now it seems too late to stop it. However, if Bush and Blair have anymore imperialist crusades up their sleeve I think they will meet stiffer resistnace than they ever faced this time around, from the UK public at least.

What if evidence, WMDs are found that back what bush/blair asserted. Will that make a differance?

Besides I thought everyone thought we should be going after N.Korea and others instead of Iraq. What if they want to go after then next?

Not saying we should (yet).

It may make a difference to some I suppose. I still think they could have been found through peaceful means eventually and obviously even if they do find them many will accuse them of planting the WMD's. All though I wouldnt rule this out as a possibility it would be very hard to prove either way! I think if the Iraqi's actually use them on our troops then opinion will swing wildly towards supporting the war. But even if that happens there is a big difference to using them against an invading army and using them inside US or UK borders to target a civillian population wouldnt you say?

If the US is going to lie why wouldn't we just chem ourselves and blame it on him. I won't be suprised at all it that happens if Saddam does us WMDs. But in a world were people wear aluminum foil on their heads I can believe anything when it comes to what people are willing to believe.
Did that make any sense?

If we were to plant WMD's and if we are as evil an ill intentioned as some think then why wouldn't we gas our own troops and then blame it on Saddam. If Saddam were to use WMD's I'm sure we'll get blamed anyway.

12 dead troops in today's instant media coverage mad society is like 10,000 troops dead in WWII.

People freak out now if 2 people die in a bombing incident, when millions of civilians were killed in WWII and nobody freaked out at how wrong the allied forces were for being in the war.

People are WAY too sensitive now about people dying, I'm not saying its not horrible when civilians or soldiers die; but people need to keep things in perspective.
