Maybe it's an overkill, but have you considered using an aluminium honeycomb? That would help with keeping the flow laminar. There might be other issues with it that I'm completely ignorant about, since I'm a total noob.

They are used for achieving laminar air flow, amongst other things.

You shouldn't have to put anything like that in front of your filter if you got the correct filter, they are designed to produce laminar flow.
If your blower is properly matched with the filter and is configured in an appropriate manner on the plenum or your unit employs a baffle system inside the plenum you shouldn't have a problem.
The company I purchased filters from have options for protective mesh across the front of the filter, if you decide to fit your own I don't think it will effect laminar flow if it is a centimeter or so away from the filter.

So I found what I was looking for at Lowes actually for 10$! I missed it a couple times, it was folded inside white cardboard and the sales guy kept insisting they had "Nothing like that here" haha.

It's 1' x 2', I might have to trim off a tiny bit but I think I can manage with tin snips, it's pretty thin.

It's sturdy enough to stop hands from accidentally banging into the filter face, maybe even more but it will bow inwards with enough force so I wouldn't like kick it or anything
Still is a good enough grate for a mobile flow hood.

Also bought some nice (5 ply?) Birch wood to build this sucka.
