Has anyone else seen the ad I just saw at the shroomery home page for micron magikal filter discs? it showed up the first time and I checked it out, but now I can't find it again. Anyway, my real question is . . . Has Anyone Tried using these filter discs? Because it seems that they could be quite advantageous in growing, if they work.

Yes, filter discs work fine. If you use them, you'll have to open your jars to innoculate. You don't want to poke the syringe through them. So if you have a clean enough environment for that, go for it. Also, there's nothing special about any brand. You can get them from most of the mycology supply vendors like lana, dimitri and nushroom. They're also pretty reasonable from fungi perfecti.

The filter disks are good. The only problem is with drying out, you have to keep the jars in a humidified chamber while incubating to prevent the water from evaporating through the filter and drying out your substrate.
If you want you can poke through the filter to innoculate aswell. Just put two filters on instead 1 when you sterilise, then take the top one off, poke through the second one, innoculate, put the first one back and incubate.

I bought the fungi perfecti autoclavable bags with the filter disk.
After inoculation I put the 6 1/2pint jars inside the sterilized bag carefully, folded ends
and duct taped closed. My cakes were a bit dry but I think more from the high sterilization
temp, not evaporation through the bag filter. I have another batch of eq's in bags
right now. It's great because I can safely move them around to ck them.
These are my first growing experiences but right now I have a gazillion pins on my cakes
no contams. I love the bags with the filters. I can't imagine doing it any other way now.

I guess I wasn't clear about what I did. AFTER I inoculated the jars I put the
entire jar into the sterilized
bag so that O2 could circulate. Air passes through the bag
filter but filters out the potential contams. If the holes on the jar lids
are covered with tape
that wouldn't permit airflow thru the vermic layer down into the colonizing jar.
Hence the inoculated jar
is protected in the bag yet is able to receive the 02.
I think I also read some where that some individuals use Micropore tape
over the holes. I just think the bags are safer from contamination.
The filter disk inside the jar makes sense as well but it's prolly cheaper
to do it the way I did it. oooooooooookay
