Problem with Micron Magick Filter Discs???
    #470542 - 11/26/01 09:22 PM (23 years, 4 months ago)

I just sterilized 6 jars. My previous 6 fell to contams. I have grown successfully in the past. I fell out of growing for a while and am having some problems with my situation.

I pc'd the previous 6 jars with a 10 p.s.i. After sterilizing there was a distinct burnt smell coming from the p.c. When I opened it up there was brown stains on the towel and the cooking rack. As well as the aluminum foil. I used micron magick filters with no lid. I attributed the smell and discolor as a possible burning of the towel and lack of water.

After a few days they became contaminated with green mold. I opened them up and noticed that there was no dry verm layer. This had been the first time they had been opened. After innoculation another disc was just placed over the top and the band was replaced.

After I pc'd the next 6 I again noticed the strong burnt smell and discolor in the pc (this time a 15 p.s.i.). This time the aluminum foil was also brown and the filter discs were wet. I shook the jars and it sounds like there is not much of a dry verm layer.
I was wondering,

1. Is It possible for the verm to vaporize through the filter disc?

2. And if so how do I counter this?

3. How should I innoculate and what extra precautions should I take?

4. If I am wrong, then what could be causing this?

Thanks for any help!!

my friend is growing for his first time and he used micron magic filter disks also. He pced them at 15 psi for 20 minutes and then let the pressure go out slowly then did a couple more batches. He put a wash cloth on the bottom of the pc, put the jars in, and filled it up with enough water so that it wouldn't come out of the pressure release thing. He had problems the first two times he did it cause 1 he never attempted to do anything like that before, and 2 he never used a pc before. He eventually got the hang of it and redid his messed up jars. He took the jars filled with substrate put the filter disk on, then the lid with the poked holes, then a few layers of foil cause water kept leaking in. he probably put about three layers of foil on each jar. the foil at the bottom of the jars turned a dark color and he also had some stains on his wash cloth. he just assumed it was from the tinfoil. he could see the dry verm layer was intact. everything worked fine though. no contams. well one jar contamed but that was cause he wiped it with an unsterile napkin. 1 out of 36 isn't too bad. when he inoculated he wiped the syringe with alchohol then inoculated through the filter disk, put another filter disk over that, then put the lid on that. He wiped the syringe with alchohol inbetween every jar. i don't think the verm could just evaporate. maybe water leaked in and the dry verm wasn't dry anymore. as far as the contams go maybe your disks weren't on tight enough, maybe 10 psi wasn't enough, or maybe your syringe was dirty. look over ryche hawks tips on being sterile. remember to sterilize everything you work with with flame and or alchohol, and sterilize all the surfaces you will be working on. my friend sprayed lysol all over the place and took a shower to be extra clean. he also wore latex gloves and a dust mask.

It sounds like you're putting too much water in the pressure cooker. The instructions for mine says 1 cup is needed, I put maybe 3 or 4 though. You don't need to fill it high at all..

Sounds like you're keeping the heat to high. You're cooking off the water and burning up your towel. When the stopper starts to jiggle, you turn the flame down loooow, and regulate the pressure with low heat. The cooker will still sterilze your jars with the pressure even if the heat is low because the pressure raises the boiling point of the water.

If it's still a problem. you might have to get one of those metal trivets that sits in the bottom of the cooker to elevate the jars.

When I used 3-4 cups of water I'm also using a the divoted metal tray for elevation, not a towel.

The tek at the micron magic site, (http://www.micronmagick.com/index.cfm?fuseAction=teks&tek=grain)
says to pc at 15 psi for 60 minutes. Seems kinda important.
