WBS Moisture

Could WBS be too dry after a 10 hr soak and about 20 min simmer ?

I just threw mine in boiling water, turned it off and let it soak for 1 hour. Plenty plump after the pressure cook.

Doubt it. if you just soaked em for 10 hours it would work so a 20 min simmer might get em too wet if anything,but if the grains aren't burst then id load em up and PC em.

nope none of them were burst and i put em on a towel to dry they were bone dry when i loaded em thats actually why i was a little freaked but its the moisture on the inside that matters correct ?

WBS mixes are different depending on where you get them and what kind of grain/seed they contain. For this reason there can not be a specific way to prepare WBS cause all seeds/grains are different. As a starter boil for 10 minutes and then monitor and check every 5 minutes or less and do the bite test on them and make sure they are just a half tad harder than aldente or something like that. Grain should not be hard and 'floury' in the center but kind of soft and a bit squishy. It will of course still be a bit harder than the outer parts of the grain. GL

Avoid willy myco like the plague. You dont hard boil wbs you simmer it. A Hot soak is recommended or else you end up with burst millet.

i actually put it in a slow cooker and the water temp was about 125 for about 30 min

thanks ill check that out, heres what it looked like before and after pc...after i understand it will suck the moisture back up after it cools. is this correct ?

Depends. If grain is hydrated to the max they will not suck up excess moisture and vice versa.. Did you let them steam dry in the mesh/colander?

they did steam dry but i spread them out on a towel, they were bone dry when i loaded them, i could just wait it out and see but thats not as fun as discussing it lol

that experiment you did was sweet btw....i might do an extra jar with the hot water soak in your test just for the heck of it

I recently went back to rye and I like rye so much, easy to prep, very nice nutritional value and the boil off and soak water can be used to make both agar and liquid culture cause it so clear compared to other grain water.

Certianly does not look to dry in the pics. Ive been using millet cause i thought more inoculation points is better. It seems like the more important thing is proper hydration and rye berries are easier to cook without over cooking and can hold the water longer. Plus you can eat em. Going to try them next. Id say noc her up what have you got to lose? My first jars were too dry my second ones were too wet and my last two were in the middle. They are all growing at the moment. Id feel good about those jars imo.

I've never seen anyone having problems with getting a jar to colonize cause it has a bit of excecc moisture :shrug: it's not optimal but nothing detrimental

Whats up with popcorn tek its no good? I have thought about trying them cause i can get them cheap as hell through work (16.50 for a 5 gallon bucket of them plus you keep the bucket) but i have only heard negitive remarks made. Is it just garbbage spawn, is it the guy who wrote the tek or what gives?
