Question about plenum airspace in Myco bags....
    #25758517 -

Hello, I grow cubes on 4 quarts of rye in medium sized myco bags in both .2 and .5 filters.

I don't own a flowhood, so I opt to immediately seal the bag, and hang it to fill with air through the filter. This has proven to nearly eliminate the problems I was having when I attempted having the bag open in a SAB box for grain to grain. (I inject LI now)

Is this enough air though? is there any other way I could get air in there safely?

Thanks, T

I've considered rigging a household hepa so that all air flow is directed into a hose and then holding said hose up against the filter. Think my hepa broke or something right before I actually tried it. An amusing but probably absurd idea would be to put a needle at the end of this hose, flame it and inject air through the injection port

I also once just put my mouth on the filter and blew into it. Obviously this seems like its just begging for contams but I think I remember the bag I did this to remaining clean. probably a lot safer with .2 micron filters. Not to mention that human breath is probably not very oxygen rich.

I seem to remember briefly microwaving a bag that'd already been PC'd and it inflated like a balloon.

I haven't really had success growing in bags before, just did some test runs i never inoculated so these are simply ideas.

edit: I wonder if air that travels through a whatman syringe filter is sterile, I know I just saw a tek that suggested that water that passes through said filters is sterile. Wouldn't that be amusing if you could just attach a needle to the filter and inject air in with a big syringe/bicycle air pump or something. just thoughts

later edit: Just read more about it and whatman filters down to .2 micron size, whereas hepa air filters (according to quick googling) down to .3. So theoretically, this could work :strokebeard:

psilos...

I really like your thinking. I was considering a small computer fan on a 3 inch pipe and resting it against the patch for 30 minutes.

I've had a million "pull the bag outward from many points" attempts, but that really isn't very doable.

I am re-interested in this topic, because I am finding that my .5 bags are doing better than my .2 bags. So I'm trying to get more air in there.

I think you are fine. Hanging bags worked for me before i had a flowhood. I would not suggest most of what has been discussed above. In theory, you could inject sterile air from a syringe in a couple different ways but i wouldn't bother. Blowing on the filter sounds like the worst idea possible. standard paper "hepa" filters may claim to filter down to whatever size but it's really about how effectively they. There is a big difference between .999997 and .97 % efficiency.

When you seal the bag, instead of tucking the gussets in neatly like that pull them all the way out so the top is much wider and then seal it. Of course your sealer needs to be bigger too. But this makes the volume a LOT bigger inside the bag. Also get a more consistent seal since the whole seal is 2 layers of bag thick this way, with the gussets tucked in half is 4 layers and half is 2 layers.

Thanks sandman. I've done that a few times, but I stopped because I felt I was farting around with the bag half open too long. But maybe I should try again.

A year bag I tested my SAB by pc'ing a few bags and carefully opening them, swallowing some SAB air and sealing it.  I didn't noc them. They contamed.  It was a small test, but I got scared of the bags being open. I just bought some very cool plastic mycobag clips that pinch the bag closed. I'm testing them right now. Its kinda a "u" shaped extrusion that you press in some vinyl tubing into. Pretty cool.

Just saw a thread about autoclavable clips that were more like a rod/chip clip that goes along the entire length of the seal. Just saw those u shaped ones but didn't quite understand how it'd work

I may end up trying a bicycle pump fed through a syringe filter one of these days, will report back if so. Can't assume it won't work until we know. Maybe it won't be practical but I'm simply testing a concept
