My Poppy breeding facility * 1

This is my p somniferum garden so far this year, its purpose will be for harvesting enough seed to plant several much larger areas this spring. I have personally been crossing various induistrial strains I have collected over the years with certain “heirloom” varieties which are selected for their various desirable qualities. Ie. 55day flower time, early stage tiller formation, as well as pod size and other ethnobotanical uses. Each row is staggered to prevent unwanted cross polination.i will post updates as the season progresses, I sowed the big boys in the back September 10 the fronts are only 5 weeks, also I perform various stressor training during the season to elicit immune response. Also I use Giberellic acid 777ppm as a modifier early stages of certain strains and other protocols with others. I had them on fish and guano early with a 30-15-30 time release with watering sparsely as this season has been wet as shit in the sf Bay Area I face the bay bridge in the hills so the soil holds a fair amount of water but I have amended mine thouroughly 14” min to good loamy medium for my girls!

Looks good! I tried poppies last year but was way to late with sowing, i only got tiny pods.

I sprouted some seeds indoor and transplanted them outdoors today, let's see how they turn out and if they can take a shock

Yeah I don’t know which zone you live in but knowing the optimal time for sowing in your area is critical if you don’t want to end up with lil grape pods. I have found that starting them outdoors in small (3” coir) pots, then after they germinate and get some stamina built up you can simply direct plant the coir in ground. Time of sowing is the biggest thing, then almost if same importance is the soil type. Hard clays or other poor drainers will almost guarantee to stunt your plants. Remember poppy seeds naturally sit under the snow until it melts in spring giving the seeds the cold and light they need to germinate. The colder (not freezing) it is the harder poppy seeds germinate

Cool keep us posted! I sowed mine a couple months ago once the daily high temperature was in the 80’s. As of right now there’s tons of them growing however due to uneven ground and lots of rain many of them are so crowded and need to be thinned.  I need to thin soon or I’ll end up with areas of small plants. Hopefully Friday I can thin areas then cast more seed in the bare spots.

How much did the giberellic acid help?

I dunno about using high end nutrients for poppies. I find that they will grow well in the shittiest of soils as long as it's loose and sandy.
  I also find that if you transplant , the cabbage will look really good... But the pods will all be small.

They really do like the soil to dry out an for it to be airy! They love perlite an sand, i think some manure tea feeding every once an awhile.



Did you make a cross it to make it more suitable for forrest life?

I lost all of my seed stock. I had a lot too. I got locked up for a few years and entrusted someone to hold them.  I left specific instructions to keep them.in a cool dry area....

  What does he do..... He puts them outside in his shed. He said he was paranoid.  :facepalm:

There is no law against having them

Needless to say.... They were no longer viable.  I lost all of the strains I had worked so hard and long to cultivate.

Someone gifted me about 1-2 grams of seed. I don't know what strain ... So I am on a hope and a prayer that they are decent.

I also lost the entirety of my cacti garden...    Which I could have probably sold...  But given.my current circumstance which I find myself...  They would have been more an encumberance than I could deal with.

I had so many strains. My Favorite were the Peshwar ..var. Album , Turkish....Which looked like green pumpkins.. And what I think was Tasmanian... Some of these seeds were red.

Then I had some other stuff that made very pretty flowers.... But....

Those top 3 each had their own bouquet when making " dried flower arrangements"  to think that they are forever lost to me... Is distressing..

  Another thing that really.pissed me off. I hooked dude up with free seed samples off of my best strains.

He makes a garden and does the arrangements green and doesn't even make one iota of an attempt to save the seeds for next year.
  Needless to say , It will be a cold day in Hell before he ever gets another seed from me.

I apologize if I have gone off topic and ranted in OPs thread. It just feels good to vent.

Looks good to me man! It’ll grow into a beast.

Here’s 2 of the 4 areas I casted seed out. These 2 areas are where I had some huge fires. They are way over crowded and need to be thinned but I’d rather spend my time pulling weeds up around the cacti. In another couple weeks I’ll thin around the biggest ones and mulch them but the rest will have to fair on their own.

Next year I’m going to mix the seed with some sand that way I don’t over die so bad.

I’m have had this Hungarian strain for 5 years with 1 cross with a  Tazzie red I found last year. Both these strains were not grown from seed stock from packages. Since you like growing then as well I suggest my method for finding the best rarest seed stock. You must keep your eyes peeled constantly during flowering season in your area but you will eventually spot some in someones yard. Without looking like a total degenerate :cool: one day go and knock on the owners door and just say “you were passing by and was awestruck by your beautiful somniferums where did they come from?”  I did this 5 years ago only to meet the sweetest 80 year old Hungarian lady who brought them with her 50 years prior and has been growing them exclusively for medicinal use( she made the fucking strongest tincture I’ve ever had!) and since shed been alone since her husband died she gladly shared her seed stock (and some tincture) in exchange for a day of some chores in the garden. This spoke volumes to me  about the importance of asking the owner about their ethnobotanicals and not just taking them snatch and grab style. Not only did I get A-M-A-Z-I-N-G seed stock but that lady’s year was made just me chatting horticulture with her (mainly poppies ahaha) and that was more valuable than the seeds 😇
Anyhoo these are the Hungarians I refer to they are currently 87 days old and built like brick shithouses!

Pepe that is awesome all the way around!!! Keep us posted on the grow, I’m curious. I also bought some different varities this year but talked myself out of it. I need to finish sowing the gallon bag of seed that was gifted to me. Hopefully next year or so I’ll grow some different varities.

It helped massively when applied daily at solutions of 500-750ppm. I have been using it over a year now and it’s really a miracle. Too strong a solution results in massively  elongated growth leading somniferum especially to flop and not be able to support themselves alone (i used wires when this happened). You can buy a premix solution of GA-3 from United nuclear but it is WAY overpriced. I found a vendor of 10grams of 99%ga-3 crystals on Amazon (just check reviews, other sites also sell it in this form) you do have to do a bit of prep ( dilute crystals in a bit of 99%iso) —this takes a bit as they don’t like to dissolve easily. Then just add the iso/ga3 (about a shot glass I use) to however much distilled h20 (<——crucial!)to make your desired strength. Mine came with a chart. But yeah I highly recommend using it just order some it’s fairlt cheap (~$30/10g—this lasts me a month or two of daily applications on most my plants not just somniferum see my other recent posts of the Hungarians barely Any time and with daily (in the early am/when uptake of ga-3 and other hormones is highest) just experiment with it start at maybe 400ppm and move up 100ppm every 5 days until you hit 7-800 or where the plants like it best. Too high and just makes them look like sloth from the goonies! They will fal over like I said these are a result of this



This big boy actually was so elongated we got 50mph winds here and he strait up got pulled out the ground in its raided bed so I actually successfully transplanted it (still don’t know how -must be dat GA JUICE haha)
