My First Grow. Psilocybe Cubensis
    #25721048 -

Hi just thought I would share my first grow, in return for some advice and guidance.

I have decided to give the micro dosing a go to hopefully replace my current meds with it, I can’t find any bad info (unless it’s written by the government, or big pharma companies) on the subject so I am very excited to give it a go.

Apologies if I get some of the terminology wrong as I am pretty new to this, but I will gladly stand corrected.

I used a Psilocybe Cubensis syringe sourced online.

I used wild birdseed as my spawn.

Soaked it overnight and picked out all of the black sunflower seeds, then simmered for 20mins or so.

Drained, washed and dried I filled my jars 3/4 full, and used a cotton wool ball over the hole in the lid and placed foil over them.

Unfortunately I don’t have a PC yet so I just boiled them in my stockpot with the lid on for 2 hours and then left them in there to cool (hopefully it did the job)

I inoculated them that night, I flame sterilised the syringe needle before use but not between jars. I then covered the hole with a fresh cotton wool ball (I realise this won’t be sterilised but the original had gone all soggy which I didn’t like the look of) and taped them on.

It has been about 5 or 6 days (I’m losing track of time being off over Christmas) and I have noticed some growth in the jars. I keep them in the boiler cupboard in the bedroom. Not too hot, not too cold.

My jars so far

There were no droplets of water inside the jar until last night when I put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel with them, hope it doesn’t cause any problems.

I will post updated pics every few days and hopefully you experts can guide me along the way if there is anything that doesn’t look right.

If I remember correctly, steaming grains does not get them up to a high enough temperature to kill all the contams in them.  You need a PC to successfully pasteurize agar and grains.  I hope for your sake that I'm wrong, but I can't for the life of me remember reading anywhere or from anyone that steaming grains or seed works.

You really need to flame the needle red hot between each jar.  When you go about your next batch make sure to do so.

The lids you are seeing people use with the "cotton" ball is actually polyfil.  Looks the same but polyfil is synthetic and therefore contamination resistant where cotton is organic and is prone to contaminations which will find their way into your jars.

If your cotton balls were soggy then you did something wrong. I'm not sure what.. but the foil that you put placed over the lids while steaming should have prevent any moisture from getting to the top of the jars.  So maybe you need to use a bigger piece of foil or crimp it down tighter.

Cubensis mycelium colonized just fine at room temperature (70°F - 80°F). Anything warmer will promote bacterial growth.  So theres no need to incubate colonizing jars unless your temps are below that range.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think your right around the corner from some major contaminations in those jars.  The info I can gave you will help you to fix your procedure and techniques though so at least you'll know where you went wrong. Which seems like a few places.  You live and learn. We all do and even the best of us still mess up.

Good luck with those jars and to all future attempts and grows!  Stick with it!

P.S.: I don't see anything alarming in those pictures beides a decent amount of busted grains, but time will tell.

I did read in most places that they need pressure cooking but there would be one or 2 people saying they got away with just steaming and put it down to pure luck, I was that eager that I thought I would just give it a go, I still won’t be able to buy a PC for a few weeks so not too much loss if things go wrong, and hopefully lear

Do you think it would be wise to remove the cotton and replace with some poly fill or is it too risky and I should just leave it be?

Cheers

Low pressure sterilization is possible, but you need to go for much longer than 2 hours. 8-12 hours at least. Get yourself a PC, and go via agar to avoid inevitable heartache.

You need a PC to sterilize grains. If you don't own a pc, you can do pf tek.

Are those filters actual cotton, or synthetic.  If it’s cotton, you’re probably already fucked, if it’s synth, leave it

The grains arent pressure cooked. This grow will mold anyways..

Well guys it seems I only buy the best, 100% pure cotton {>.<}

You live and learn eh.... still excited to see what happens either way.

Never looked into using agar, can you make a dish from a spore syringe?

Yes you can. The best part is you only need one drop of spore solution. But then for agar you are going to need a PC.
The only thing you can do without the pc is PF Tek.

I guess if you’re into watching mold grow it will be fun.

I will keep it going and keep the pics up even if it goes bad, at least it’s some online evidence to show people what happens if you don’t do it right.

I will look into the agar, see if I can borrow a PC off someone

Maybe it will help, maybe it won’t, but I swapped out the cotton wool for micropore tape.

I was as sterile as I could be, cleaned everything first, bunged the hole as soon as the cotton wool was removed, cleaned the lid and taped it over.

2 of my jars look like they “may” have black mold growing, tiny tiny amount but not sure, however...........

Just ordered some agar dishes and have sourced a second hand PC for £5!! And will be making a SAB tomorrow also.

There is nothing wrong with cotton! Microbiologists used cotton plugs for culture tubes for the best part of last century!
I use cotton (because I happen to have a lot of it) without any issues whatsoever. Polyfill does not soak up water, that's the advantage, but it's minor.

Do not change the plugs now! All you will accomplish is add more contamination.

Yeah cotton works, but it also contams regularly.  It’s whatev I’m just here for the show.

I used cotton in the lab countless times and it never contaminated.

Same here. 1988-2002, A dozen tubes a day average, 5 days a week. So just about 40,000 tubes with cotton plugs. No issues.

I think what is happening here is if cotton is the only barrier, and it's in seriously contaminated environment which gets wet, the capillary action can suck some contaminants into the grow vessel. Polyfill probably won't as much because it's hydrophobic. So easy answer is to put additional barrier, like envelope tyvek over the lid. Which is what I do.
