Life of coco coir substrate.

After preparing some sub in a 5gal cooler, i notice that not all of the sub mught be used.  This question may seem trivial but hypothetically, how long could i leave the sub in the cooler ?? I was thinking indefinately (or until needed again) all i would need to do is correct the field capacity when the time came. Am i right or wrong??

It would likely get moldy. Remember it not completely sterile so it will contam without a shadow of a doubt if itโ€™s not used asap.

Get moldy my ass lol. Coir is reptile bedding. It stays out and wet for more than a month getting shit on and stays fine.
People use coir as mulch and it does not mold outside and wet.

Yup, I keep dart frogs in natural vivariums with a coir based substrate. No mold ever in a 80%-90%+ RH environment.

Iโ€™d just dry it out, put it in a ziploc baggie or container and use it again next time.

Wouldn't likely contaminate, it doesn't contain much nutrition that's readily available... could "resterilze" in the oven if it made you feel better... but it's likely unnecessary... just adjust feild capacity and go with it : should be fine,so long as your spawn is clean

My coir always gets white mold on it when I leave it for a couple weeks. So Idk why everyone says it doesn't mold. It does. I'll take a pic next time.

But honestly even when I see some mold, I just cook it and use it :shrug: Yolo.

I make shoeboxes a lot so I don't use it all at once. I have been doing this for about a yr or so and havent had any problems yet. It never gets moldy or anything even after months but its in an air tight bag so I'm sure that helps. I'm sure it would probably be better to just make it up as needed :shrug: but this is the way I do it...

I keep mine in the prep bucket lid snapped... I've had it keep fine for 2 wks no issue... can't personally speak for it beyond that... try to only prep what I need typically

Yeah same... everyone says it realy doesnโ€™t contam but I know from personal experience that it most definitely does...in a few days

I use one of those gatorade insulated drink coolers.  I made up a batch on 11/29 (I do a sort of bucket tek) and used did some mini tubs.  two weeks later some more shoeboxes...and 12/21 some more shoeboxes.  I have had zero problems with any contamination. The lid screws on tight and moisture content is fine.

I say use it! My coir only cacti trays that sit in my moldy ass basement took about 4 weeks to start growing mold, some still haven't grown mold 2 months later. I didn't even use boiling water to hydrate the coir either. Just warm tap water out in the open.


I made too much coir 2 weeks ago and have had it sitting in a cooler here and I just use it when needed. So far everything looks great. I've got 2 mini shoeboxes and 2 shoeboxes going.
