Attempt liquid culture, Are these white floaters mycillum?
    #25685878 -

I have a friend attempting liquid cluture from spores. The liquid is an appropriate amount of syrup added to water from boiled potatoes. The LC was started from spore syringe. I understand all the gripe about doing it that way.

Can anyone tell me if 1) these white puffball specks floating on top are actually mycillum from the spores? I was expecting them to grow inside the LC not on top.

Is it is, should it be mixed in?

It’s definitely mycelium and it’s definitely from spores but anyone claiming to know the species is likely bullshitting. Put a drop on agar and see what grows. It’s hard to recognize growth patterns in liquid media. Also the colony forming on top like that is usually not a good sign.

That'll form a solid mass on the top of the liquid if you dont shake the jar periodically to break it up.

Oh, BTW WELCOME!

Do that looks crazy how that's growing on top like that. Normally looks matted when it's up top.

:whathesaid:

sometimes it's possible to recognize contaminated LC but it's not possible to identify clean LC unless you test it.

It's magic.

The mix is a couple table spoon unsulfurnated molasses and the water was boiled in potato slices first and strained into the jars. Then its It was pressure cooked at 14 psi for 90 minutes.  The mix is dark and a light is necessary to see through it.

With LC it’s better to have something you can see through IMO.

Interesting - I had two jars with a similar look - but with more typical mycelium suspended mycelium below. I assumed it was contamination - I have some agar Q/C plates cooking - maybe I shouldn't toss it jus yet?
