A Liquid Culture Question
    #4027254 - 04/07/05 06:19 PM (13 years, 17 days ago)

A FOAF has made a number of attempts at liquid culture jars, procedure as follows:

1 Tbsp Light Malt Extract
1 Tbsp Dextrose
...are both slowly mixed in with about 2/3 of a quart of boiling distilled water, and allowed to boil for 10-15 min. Resulting liquid is strained 3 times through coffee filters, poured into a quart sized canning jar, *EDIT* PC'd at 15 psi for 20-30 min, *EDIT* and allowed to cool overnight before injection of spores.

On every occasion, said FOAF wakes up in the morning to find a light brown, powdery (malt-looking) substance resting at the bottom of the jar. He has been reluctant to innoc these jars, as he has seen many pictures of liquid culture projects without this powder at the bottom. Is he using too much malt? Should he leave out the dextrose? On his most recent attempt, he strained the hot mixture 6 times before allowing it to cool, and he was left with similar results. He has tried lids w/gas exchange as well as airtight with no variation. Any advice?

You have to pressure cook the liquid culture solution..not just boil it.
And you would be better off only filling the quart jars only 1/3. Adding a few pieces of glass or marble can aid in breaking up the mycelium.

your tek screams contamination!!! No need to strain the dextrose, no need for distiled water, too much sugar. Use either dextrose or malt but not both. 1tbsp is way too much for 2/3 quart of water let alone 2 tbsp. Just use 1 tsp of dextrose for that 2/3rds quart of water, dont strain.
This is dextrose that isnt strained. The cloudiness is mycelium

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

i usually have to strain with malt or honey. Dextrose is cleaner i agree. Stupid sugars carmalize when using honey or malt.
Cops got my JB couple years ago.... so sad.
I love the hands free whip though for the VD. im so lazy
