Personally, I believe in climate change. I just don’t want to do anything about it because the brown folks will die first.

Just as an aside, I do believe in climate change. Personally, I can't speak for the entire world, but my father worked for the Department of Environmental Protection in PA. He was a high ranking boss who cleaned up a lot of acid mine drainage and even made reports on illegal dump areas, which resulted in death threats. He was respectable.

He told me about the changes he had seen in his time at the DEP. He told me about growth on top of mountains and different plant life growing. He believed in PH levels changing in the soil.

I don't doubt that there is climate change, but I do think the there is a middle ground solution. Peasants shouldn't  pay the massive cost of drastic infrastructure change.

It's important to be aware, but the solutions in have to be reasonable.

France is not Reasonable

Boss, my dad worked for the DEP as a mine inspector. Small world.

they most certainly have free energy developed.  but it is considered "disruptive technology"

they will not release that to the masses because it would put the oil industry out of business.  similar to what happened with Kodak when digital came out.  Really big businesses wouldn't make money anymore. there is a lot of people who would live simple lives (like me) who don't buy into the consumerism materialism "I need to buy shit I don't need" and these people wouldn't need to work, it'd be easy to be self sustaining, grow your own food, etc.

This is so typical. When confronted with any counterargument you guys just start calling people stupid.

Greening is a fact. It is the one and only 100% verifiable consequence of increased carbon emissions. No one denies it is happening. Your own climate scientists fully acknowledge it, and they're falling all over themselves to figure out how it's a bad thing.

And climategate did happen. Look it up.

This text recently appeared on the French platform lundimatin; they describe it as the best sociological and political analysis to date on the yellow vest movement. I think it's worth the read if you are interested in what's happening in France right now.

I didn't call you stupid.  I called your argument stupid and ignorant.  There are plenty of verifiable consequences of increased carbon emissions, including acidification of the ocean and increase in global temperature.

We can go back and forth on this all day long. Like I said before, I don't know whether it's happening or not.

But when I look at the people who are pushing this stuff, they all live in multimillion dollar mansions, have multiple homes, fly first class, drive large SUVs, etc. If I were in their positions and I knew in my heart and mind that climate change were real, I would be leading from the front. I simply can't find any of them credible as long as they're refusing to practice what they preach.

"Pushing this stuff?"  The scientific community has long since reached a consensus.  No one needs to "push" anthropogenic climate change anymore than anyone needs to push the Newtonian model of gravity.

I'm talking about the politicians who are making policies that will seriously lower our standard of living while they themselves live in the lap of luxury.

And that goes for a lot of the scientists, as well. Most of them are at least upper middle class, and many are well beyond that even.

Like I said, when those folks are all living in tiny houses and driving priuses then I will start to worry.

There is no solution to the problem at this point.  That doesn't change the fact that there is a problem, however.  We can argue about the best ways to approach the issue, but pretending the issue doesn't exist is beyond stupid.

Scientists are not living like kings. That is ridiculous. Most of them earn government or academic salaries, which are at best comfortable. They aren’t getting rich.

The scientists that make a lot of money work for industry.

You have this completely backwards

A scientist with a post doctorate degree working for the federal government starts in the mid $40,000. Maybe after 20 years they can make $100k. If they manage to become a director of their department maybe $150. The people who run an entire agency can make about $200. I’m talking about the administrator of NIH or NOAA, the highest ranking people in government. An scientist working in industry can make $100k right of the bat, and make far more than $200k as they gain more experience.

I reserve my right to be skeptical. I might be older than most people here, but I've heard so many dire warnings over the years that haven't come true. First it was the polar bears. There are more polar bears than ever before. Then it was the icecaps being gone by 2007. They're bigger than ever. Now they're saying we won't have any chocolate by 2050.

That's not even mentioning climategate or the pause on global warming. Or the fact that the guy who came up with global warming in the first place said it was complete bullshit, after which he was viciously attacked by people like Al Gore who have made hundreds of millions of dollars on climate change.

Like I said, when people like Al Gore move to tiny houses and start driving priuses then I will worry. Until then, I will keep an open mind but my wallet is closed.

Most people here have seen these arguments debunked so many times, they're getting tired of newbies coming in and making the same old claims.  But I'll help you learn nonetheless, and if you're not interested in learning, at least others here can learn:

agent_smith said:

Polar bear hunting is now illegal except to indigenous people, and that's helped the polar bear population considerably.  Regardless, several subpopulations of polar bears are still decreasing as a result of climate change.

Scientific consensus did NOT say they'd be gone by 2007, and there's plenty of evidence to say you're wrong about them being bigger than ever:
'Off the Charts': New Study Shows Greenland Ice Sheet Likely Hasn't Melted This Fast for More Than 7,000 Years
Sea Ice Extent Sinks to Record Lows at Both Poles
Arctic sea ice at minimum extent

The pause on global warming is my favorite, because it shows how you've been tricked.  You're clearly referring to this 'pause' on global warming from 1997 to 2014:

During that 'pause', climate scientists have continued to say that temperatures would pick up again, and it's now clear they were right, as shown in the graph I provided you which you've conveniently ignored (yes, the 1997-2014 'pause' is in there):

As for climategate, it's a bunch of emails being taken out of context.  More here.

And the politicians and lobbyists?

Your numbers are low anyways. The people really pushing this stuff are the tenured professors at Ivy League schools, and they're pulling down in excess of 200k a year.

We could also talk about the various celebrities, CEOs, and other public figures who are pushing economically devastating legislation while swilling champagne in their mansions. We're talking about people who have their own private jets, multiple cars, multiple houses, food flown in from all over the world, and any other number of things. Their caviar that they served at their last climate fundraiser probably has a bigger carbon footprint than my entire family.

You mean the ones who are actually studying climate change, and would earn the same amount of money regardless of what their studies prove.  Got it.

You're trying to deflect from the fact that climate change is rife with hypocrisy. Like I said, when Al Gore gives away all his money and moves to a tiny house then I'll worry, but not before. I mean for crying out loud, the guy doesn't even have solar panels. He has pretty much endless money and he hasn't even bothered getting solar panels to keep up appearances. So he finally got some solar panels. Big deal. Doesn't change the fact that his carbon footprint for one year is bigger than mine for my entire life.

Or at least my life thus far...though I too would like to be a rich bastard someday. I just won't be hypocritical about and ask people to live like third world hillbillies while I'm sipping champagne on my private jet.

those solar panels probably get close to covering his electrical costs most of the year. I know he flies commercial because my mother has been on a flight with him on southwest. (Most politicians fly commercial) Most of what you hear about al gore is bullsht manaufactired to discredit the cause.

Where is your outrage that the oil companies pay millions of dollars to public relations operations to muddy the science and create doubt in the public and politicians. There is so much money being spent to promote ideas that serve the corporate interests of companies that want to make sure the US doesn’t do anything to hurt the oils and gas industry.
