Re: AGAR ENVY! (Anything and All things agar!) [Re: Sulfurshelfsean]

Not sure if this is a good spot to ask this but it's mainly about agar so here goes. I been having issues with trich in all my grows. I tried to clean my cultures on agar using trench plates, cabin plates and water agar. There's never any colonized plates that show contamination even after months of sitting. I get plins regularly that grow and drop spores on the plates. Grain prep is soak for 24 hours, finish hydrating by simmering, PC qt jars for 120 minutes at 17psi, let cool in PC and do inoculation the next day.
Should I just start over with new genetics if I keep getting trich and the plates look good? Is there another way to clean up a culture I'm missing when it comes to trich?

(caveat, I'm still in my first year as a cultivator but I have some thoughts about what you've written)

You seem to be under the assumption that the trich is coming from dirty cultures. I think it's highly unlikely that that is the case.  Trich is a ubiquitous mold that lives in an the environment. It's literally everywhere. To quote beef, it's in every breath you take. From what you're describing it sounds like the mold problem is coming in the bulk phase - am I correct?

So with that said, I would focus your efforts on creating conditions that are not as conducive to trich growth. The idea is to make sure that you have super clean and strong spawn before going to bulk. Once you're going to bulk you're basically saying "okay, this mycelium is strong enough to be out in the non-sterile world, out of the sterile grain jar and into a tub with choir". So I would be looking at 1) do you have clean spawn and are you letting it colonize fully and allowing it to get good and strong before sending it to bulk, and 2) what conditions in my bulk growing area are conducive to trichoderma? Look at humidity, ventilation (is there an HVAC event blowing directly over your grows?), temperature control, etc. Other TCs might be able to give better input on what conditions are ideal for trichoderma growth, but that's the way I would be thinking about this, not about cleaning up your cultures. It sounds like your skills with agar are pretty on point. I also don't think there's a genetics problem here.

I hope this helps.

It's always in bulk. I have sent some questionable spawn before but recently I only sent extremely good looking spawn. It's been fully colonized wheat, no excess moisture what so ever or it gets tossed, one solid color and easy to break up and smells awesome. I been doing shoeboxes recently and have noticed that it seems to be a little high RH. Maybe it's just high humidity and I have to figure out how to get more fae. Thanks for the response. I'm move this question to the quick question thread to not let this one get off topic.

I would take 12 to 1 and and 10 to 11. those are looking well isolated and could be a fun pheno hunt if you keep samples small. if your looking for a more diverse culture just take the whole qtr from 12 to thee , cut that in half and throw it in two jars. faster one gets g2g and slower one fruits by itself.

that's just how I would do it lol

I took one last transfer from this clone and that will be the plate I will use for grain if it is clean. I'm just baffled by the complete absence of rhizo in all my plates regardless of variety or species.

Some other user showed me cubes on cardboard and all the pics were very rizo and threadlike. Must be what it does when grown on cardboard to a higher degree? I dunno

Some say they will rhizo more with low nutes so I’m guessing that would be what’s going on with the cardboard maybe it’s stretching out to get whatever nutes it can but I have no real idea

I'm going to leave cardboard for the more adventurous cultivators . I'm making ~1,5%-1,8% brf agar right now because mushboy said he likes it (I'm incapable of mixing three ingredients without making a mess so that's the sort of margin for error I'm working with ) to see if it works better. I even remembered the food coloring this time so the agar isn't the same colour as myc.

I just HAD to try it when I saw it lol. Cardboard wont work for selecting strains and stuff. But I think if I really wanna get some plates going and I don't wanna wait for more malt extract and shit to come in the mail I always got cardboard.

Only use I have for cardboard is woodlovers at the moment. Would like to clear up any misunderstandings I've caused by posting pics of cube mycelium on cardboard. I would not recommend cardboard for dung loving or soil loving species (experimentation is fine just know I suggest to avoid cardboard for anything aside from woodlovers).

agar is far superior for selection and examination and far more visually appealing on top of practically noone has experience with cardboard.

Meaning experiment at your own risk of failure and no support for any problems you may encounter along the way. Do not recommend. Do what others know so you can get help.

Unless your a expert mycologist or a rebel just don't. Save urself the struggle mush love and hope this is well received. If u just want to learn then hey do you thang tho

Is that what you get when you successfully grow PE on nothing but cardboard?
