ADHD meds and being an adult and whatnot
    #25567654 -

ADHDers (especially if you're hyperactive, to where sitting during a workday is an issue), did you keep taking medication when you got settled into a job and graduated college and all that?

Advice or thoughts welcome.

I'm thinking I'm going to either talk my doc into this or just switch to IRs and after a few months I'll have enough to use them PRN for a couple years... the idea is get back to the coping levels I had before meds and then just take them if it really is starting to affect something in my life.

I had to quit taking them for a health reason recently while also taking care of a bunch of shit and now that I'm back on them it's got me wondering about forever after. They're obviously incompabtible with any sort of massively international type of lifestyle or career and have a lot of other drawbacks too.

But at the same time holy fuck it's almost scary how much I'm capable of at times. I keep the dose low because I would work myself 2/3 of the way to death without them sometimes.

IDK I'm rambling and my vyvanse wore off and I have had trouble sleeping this whole week from starting it again and uuuuuuuuuugh why can't it just be a couple thousand years ago so I could be a good, useful hunter instead of a smart, troubling student.

You could argue some of my childhood was ruined by not having amphetamines, and high school (I could have easily gotten into a new Ivy if my first 2.5 years of high school were 90% as good as the last 1.5) but I got lucky both in that I didnt get prescribed them then and that I got interested in IT Votech and Philosophy and college when I was 15 as I was a horrible student and though I don't recall this exactly I had worked out when I could legally drop out and was talking to my parents about it.

There is the lost potential aspect to consider as otherwise its a pretty simple decision outside of like getting fired for not being able to focus or something extreme

Oh also for me it's kinda stimulating too in a way the first few days but it's more that what I'm trying to do and focus on becomes like a tunnel I can point where I want, and holy shit I got prescribed adderall the first time and studied on it and when I got up my butt hurt. I literally had never had my butt hurt from sitting at a desk too long before in my life... I do not sit in one place naturally. soo I am trying to understand if we had different experiences or not. The stimulation ultimately yielded over weeks to feeling a little like a zombie but that's why I am on V and not A or D plus you dont grind your teeth hardly at all on V.

I highly fucking recommend it TBH and I am super cynical of this whole treatment paradigm to be frank... so convenient anf very gentle on how you feel... no big ups or falling off the adderall shelf.

They have a coupon to get it for $50 a month max copay FYI. I paid $300 once and then was like okay not sustainable

Oh... government. I dont even want to know what it would cost as private prescription there.

If you want, let me know and we could just do an international drug deal facilitated through an online psychedelic nexus on the clear net. Seems smart and what could go wrong? You can smuggle me some illegal memes in return... I want a literally illegal pepe for my collection :feelsgoodman:

Re: ADHD meds and being an adult and whatnot [Re: SunnyD]

Using my medication (adderall) irresponsibly and out of fear is what drove me to quit my first well paying "respectable" job.

As a programmer, I found them necessary to be able to do my work effectively which led me taking the drug every single day. I think this was my first mistake. I built a tolerance and quickly found myself jumping to almost recreational doses to the point where I would often get paranoid and hide away in my office peaking out the window. I was afraid to speak to anyone half the time. I even got to the point where I lost sight of things so much that I found myself doing lines of my medication off my desk. Eventually I couldn't take it anymore and, being afraid that I would lose my job after quitting the medication, I decided to also quit the job while I could still get a good recommendation. It was a real low point for me.

After that I freelanced for awhile and for the first 6 months I found myself able to be reasonably effective working without the medication. After that 6 months I got a lot of my symptoms back, was unable to get anything done at all and fell into a depression. This led me to believe my current working ADHD theory which is that stimulants aren't so much something to be used exclusively while working. Rather, they're a therapeutic medication that can (in ADHD individuals) increase normal dopamine production in the brain even while not on the medication which can lead to better focus throughout your life. I'm not sure if this is a fact, but it's seemed to work well enough for me so far. Currently I try to take the lowest dose possible about 2 or 3 times a week, no more. The off days are definitely more of a struggle but after taking the medication for awhile I find I can still manage some work without it. But this limiting allows me to keep my wits about me with the medication still being somewhat effective. I've still yet to see how well this translates into the long haul, though.

It also definitely helps that I seem to be exceptionally productive (more than the average person) on my 'on' days so it all evens out.

Also (because a lot of ADHD people seem to miss this) if you haven't gotten a good night sleep, eaten with your dose and take breaks for water and food you might as well have not taken it at all. Nothing ruins my focus on the medication like tiredness or hangryness or masturbation. Once I start jacking it, I can't stop.

Copay is an amount of the total that you have to pay upfront while your insurance is billed for the remainder. It's like a "flat-fee" almost that you have to pay for certain services depending on your insurance.

On a serious note tho my doctor mentioned they made a brand new 10 hour xr ADD med (shire did) so I'm betting vyvanse will be generic soon if that might make it NHS friendly

I've never heard of it in England. I've lived in America for the past year and have only ever been gifted it.

It's out there, but it's like $20 a pill blackmarket, and no way am I paying those prices.

i have known so many tweakers over the years i just can't convince myself to give it a try, have been close to trying meth a few times but nope.

not sure about op's issues, my profession requires extreme multitasking at times so it keeps it interesting on a basic stimulation level, not sure i could do a desk job.

What's your profession?

Vyvnace is gentle AF, same with Dexamphetamine.

Both epic enhancers of ones day, with next to no side effects, in low doses.

Adderall 20mg is $3-$5 a pill if you know the right highschooler and if you buy a lot at once. Same thing with 50mg vyvanse. Most of these kids get it for free, never take it and all their friends have an abundance as well.

Stimulants are never worth it from my experience unless you absolutely need them. And even then, tread very very carefully. They're my vice. I honestly hate how people glorify these drugs like they'll fix your life. It might seem that way during the honeymoon phase... but these drugs lie.

Zaid we have creepy amounts in common sometimes but I am certain you are on to something.

Even though I dont notice a difference on vs off day to day, I am definitely way more impulsive off it, and you can see objective spikes in the weeks after I stop in the stupid shit I do, no joke (both major bad things that have happened in my life in the last few years happened within about 2 weeks of stopping vyvanse.

I didnt notice this until my mom showed me a warning about how stopping can increase impulsivity among other things in a rebound kind of fashion. Now obviously this is no study but... oh wait actually when I became homeless was also right after CT but adderall back then... yeah nvm I am the worst when I am getting back to natural ADHD me.

All recent legal trouble, every major life fuck in the last several years.

I'm a software engineer and college student and I was working a 3rd job until recently at a restaurant since I was making intern money at my real job still.

Several hour power sessions with really boring database crap are part of my reality... I go walk up and down the stairs every 20-30 minutes

Though this summer on vyvanse there went fucking great including the long sitting... idk if I'd have problems doing it without vyvanse but I was juggling so much when I stopped this time that I'm not sure I stood a great chance (quit 2nd job before even going full time dev as I could barely balance that with V)

Edit: no school or weekend job during summer either; definitely could have done without but wouldn't have impressed them quite so much, and they may not have been impressed enough to decide to try to get me full time ASAP so idk

I find myself turning into my parents even though I make a conscious effort not to. In a weird genetic way, I believe I am their living reincarnation before their death. Not sure if that's related at all to what you're talking about it but it feels like the right thing to say.

What about you? What are your thoughts?

Amphs for people with ADD & Mania have a completely different effect for those that are not effected by said conditions.

Agreed. People who don't have these conditions are jumping straight into the abuse and have no business taking them in my opinion.

Also I'm going to be a stickler here: ADD is no longer classified as a real thing in the latest DSM version. There is only different variations on ADHD. ADHD predominately hyperactive impulsive, ADHD predominately inattentive and ADHD combined types.

There was a Finnish study that demonstrated the opposite. Good discussion in Whitakker's Anatomy of an Epidemic.

Honestly not sure where to stand as I had a neurologist I saw over a skateboarding accident give me a brain scan and say "no brain damage/concussion but it does look like you have ADHD or a sleep disorder"--oo so he can tell by observing the hardware, but I was also high.

You can reliably diagnose it just off brain scans tho, namely QEEG and possibly newer methods from recent years.

Theres obviously a physical difference so I would hardly expect no difference, but I think making the difference polar between ADHD and non mischaracterizes the differences in how we experience the drug.

Unless they were partying, most nons I've seen on it acted just like me, sat for 4 hours studying. Thus was in a college setting FWIW

Yeah we are also autistic now too since it's on that spectrum now

Also we are dual diagnosis candidates with Selective Eating, fresh out of the DSM5.
