ADHD meds and being an adult and whatnot
    #25567654 -

ADHDers (especially if you're hyperactive, to where sitting during a workday is an issue), did you keep taking medication when you got settled into a job and graduated college and all that?

Advice or thoughts welcome.

I'm thinking I'm going to either talk my doc into this or just switch to IRs and after a few months I'll have enough to use them PRN for a couple years... the idea is get back to the coping levels I had before meds and then just take them if it really is starting to affect something in my life.

I had to quit taking them for a health reason recently while also taking care of a bunch of shit and now that I'm back on them it's got me wondering about forever after. They're obviously incompabtible with any sort of massively international type of lifestyle or career and have a lot of other drawbacks too.

But at the same time holy fuck it's almost scary how much I'm capable of at times. I keep the dose low because I would work myself 2/3 of the way to death without them sometimes.

IDK I'm rambling and my vyvanse wore off and I have had trouble sleeping this whole week from starting it again and uuuuuuuuuugh why can't it just be a couple thousand years ago so I could be a good, useful hunter instead of a smart, troubling student.

You could argue some of my childhood was ruined by not having amphetamines, and high school (I could have easily gotten into a new Ivy if my first 2.5 years of high school were 90% as good as the last 1.5) but I got lucky both in that I didnt get prescribed them then and that I got interested in IT Votech and Philosophy and college when I was 15 as I was a horrible student and though I don't recall this exactly I had worked out when I could legally drop out and was talking to my parents about it.

There is the lost potential aspect to consider as otherwise its a pretty simple decision outside of like getting fired for not being able to focus or something extreme

Oh also for me it's kinda stimulating too in a way the first few days but it's more that what I'm trying to do and focus on becomes like a tunnel I can point where I want, and holy shit I got prescribed adderall the first time and studied on it and when I got up my butt hurt. I literally had never had my butt hurt from sitting at a desk too long before in my life... I do not sit in one place naturally. soo I am trying to understand if we had different experiences or not. The stimulation ultimately yielded over weeks to feeling a little like a zombie but that's why I am on V and not A or D plus you dont grind your teeth hardly at all on V.

I highly fucking recommend it TBH and I am super cynical of this whole treatment paradigm to be frank... so convenient anf very gentle on how you feel... no big ups or falling off the adderall shelf.

They have a coupon to get it for $50 a month max copay FYI. I paid $300 once and then was like okay not sustainable

If you want, let me know and we could just do an international drug deal facilitated through an online psychedelic nexus on the clear net. Seems smart and what could go wrong? You can smuggle me some illegal memes in return... I want a literally illegal pepe for my collection :feelsgoodman:

Re: ADHD meds and being an adult and whatnot [Re: SunnyD]
    #25567722 -

Using my medication (adderall) irresponsibly and out of fear is what drove me to quit my first well paying "respectable" job.

As a programmer, I found them necessary to be able to do my work effectively which led me taking the drug every single day. I think this was my first mistake. I built a tolerance and quickly found myself jumping to almost recreational doses to the point where I would often get paranoid and hide away in my office peaking out the window. I was afraid to speak to anyone half the time. I even got to the point where I lost sight of things so much that I found myself doing lines of my medication off my desk. Eventually I couldn't take it anymore and, being afraid that I would lose my job after quitting the medication, I decided to also quit the job while I could still get a good recommendation. It was a real low point for me.

After that I freelanced for awhile and for the first 6 months I found myself able to be reasonably effective working without the medication. After that 6 months I got a lot of my symptoms back, was unable to get anything done at all and fell into a depression. This led me to believe my current working ADHD theory which is that stimulants aren't so much something to be used exclusively while working. Rather, they're a therapeutic medication that can (in ADHD individuals) increase normal dopamine production in the brain even while not on the medication which can lead to better focus throughout your life. I'm not sure if this is a fact, but it's seemed to work well enough for me so far. Currently I try to take the lowest dose possible about 2 or 3 times a week, no more. The off days are definitely more of a struggle but after taking the medication for awhile I find I can still manage some work without it. But this limiting allows me to keep my wits about me with the medication still being somewhat effective. I've still yet to see how well this translates into the long haul, though.

It also definitely helps that I seem to be exceptionally productive (more than the average person) on my 'on' days so it all evens out.

Also (because a lot of ADHD people seem to miss this) if you haven't gotten a good night sleep, eaten with your dose and take breaks for water and food you might as well have not taken it at all. Nothing ruins my focus on the medication like tiredness or hangryness or masturbation. Once I start jacking it, I can't stop.

Copay is an amount of the total that you have to pay upfront while your insurance is billed for the remainder. It's like a "flat-fee" almost that you have to pay for certain services depending on your insurance.

It's out there, but it's like $20 a pill blackmarket, and no way am I paying those prices.

not sure about op's issues, my profession requires extreme multitasking at times so it keeps it interesting on a basic stimulation level, not sure i could do a desk job.

What's your profession?

Vyvnace is gentle AF, same with Dexamphetamine.

Both epic enhancers of ones day, with next to no side effects, in low doses.

Adderall 20mg is $3-$5 a pill if you know the right highschooler and if you buy a lot at once. Same thing with 50mg vyvanse. Most of these kids get it for free, never take it and all their friends have an abundance as well.

Stimulants are never worth it from my experience unless you absolutely need them. And even then, tread very very carefully. They're my vice. I honestly hate how people glorify these drugs like they'll fix your life. It might seem that way during the honeymoon phase... but these drugs lie.

Zaid we have creepy amounts in common sometimes but I am certain you are on to something.

Even though I dont notice a difference on vs off day to day, I am definitely way more impulsive off it, and you can see objective spikes in the weeks after I stop in the stupid shit I do, no joke (both major bad things that have happened in my life in the last few years happened within about 2 weeks of stopping vyvanse.

I didnt notice this until my mom showed me a warning about how stopping can increase impulsivity among other things in a rebound kind of fashion. Now obviously this is no study but... oh wait actually when I became homeless was also right after CT but adderall back then... yeah nvm I am the worst when I am getting back to natural ADHD me.

All recent legal trouble, every major life fuck in the last several years.

Though this summer on vyvanse there went fucking great including the long sitting... idk if I'd have problems doing it without vyvanse but I was juggling so much when I stopped this time that I'm not sure I stood a great chance (quit 2nd job before even going full time dev as I could barely balance that with V)

Edit: no school or weekend job during summer either; definitely could have done without but wouldn't have impressed them quite so much, and they may not have been impressed enough to decide to try to get me full time ASAP so idk

Agreed. People who don't have these conditions are jumping straight into the abuse and have no business taking them in my opinion.

Also I'm going to be a stickler here: ADD is no longer classified as a real thing in the latest DSM version. There is only different variations on ADHD. ADHD predominately hyperactive impulsive, ADHD predominately inattentive and ADHD combined types.

There was a Finnish study that demonstrated the opposite. Good discussion in Whitakker's Anatomy of an Epidemic.

Honestly not sure where to stand as I had a neurologist I saw over a skateboarding accident give me a brain scan and say "no brain damage/concussion but it does look like you have ADHD or a sleep disorder"--oo so he can tell by observing the hardware, but I was also high.

You can reliably diagnose it just off brain scans tho, namely QEEG and possibly newer methods from recent years.

Theres obviously a physical difference so I would hardly expect no difference, but I think making the difference polar between ADHD and non mischaracterizes the differences in how we experience the drug.

Unless they were partying, most nons I've seen on it acted just like me, sat for 4 hours studying. Thus was in a college setting FWIW

Yeah we are also autistic now too since it's on that spectrum now

Also we are dual diagnosis candidates with Selective Eating, fresh out of the DSM5.

I think that's a very narrow opinion. By that rationale no one should ever take anything they're not prescribed.

Such things can be extremely useful, regardless of ones pre-existing condition.

Yes. If you need it, you should be able to easily explain your situation to a doctor and get it. Unless of course you've found something that works for you outside of common modern medical knowledge, in which case, it can't be prescribed to you.

Is everything else not just recreational usage? If that's the case, stick to cocaine/dexmethylphenidate. That stuff is way more fun to rail.

The fact that you need reminders to tell people you're vegan tells me you have already crossed this gap but that you're dragging it out and won't let go of the bridge.

By helping you to stay focused when you have to do shift work/be up for extended duration/have jetlag and/or need to be at your best.

Like coffee or kratom, but better.

Man, you don't half overcomplicate almost everything you bring up for discussion.

Well the statement about cocaine/dexmethyphenidate was pretty obviously an opinion. I never claimed it to be a fact and obviously it's dependent on the person. But I do find it to have much more recreational value and is generally safer than amphetamine/methamphetamine. I also prefer the shorter duration of action if I'm trying to abuse it.

Quote:
be up for extended duration/have jetlag and/or need to be at your best

Taking it to give you energy (be it from lack of sleep or food) specifically will not add anything at all to your ability to focus, especially if you have ADHD. You might as well have not taken it to begin with and in my experience, it's just mental torture.

IMO it can get pretty repetitive. I don't think it's that hard to tell the difference IMO and context clues are there for a reason. If it's not a fact that you can't look up then you should assume it's an opinion IMO.

Quote:
It's amusing to me how it's always the more arrogant/boastful members that state this. It is not the case for most.

IMO that's never really the case and most people with English as their first language (the vast majority of Shroomery users) can tell the difference. IMO I think you can be more arrogant than you realize and like to project the blame onto others while holding a self-righteous stance. But that's just my opinion.

Oh I know I come off with strong opinions alright. Always have. I try to remain humble through knowing the fact I am often wrong.

However adding an 'IMO' to show some respect to others is not, I think, repetitive at all, but respectful of ones audience.

Perhaps we have to agree to disagree.

If your ring finger is longer than your index finger you're more likely to be arrested, ADHD, alcoholic, anger problems, impulsivity, all sorts of shit.

Lots of good stuff too but basically that whole trope that so many of us are. It's literally like a set of problems that pretty much comes as a mass produced gift set.

That correlates too but I had the finger thing completely backwards for years until recently and that's when I found out all the other stuff (hint: most gay people aren't angry alcoholics with ADHD)

I was curious if your fingers say you're yin or yang on this, and more largely if you have feelings on genetic determinism as it relates to good and bad.

As for the rest of it, well... yeah, of course. We are all just biological machines at the end of the day, are we not? There has to be some sort of mechanism of action and DNA seems to be the universal programming language of all carbon based life that we know of. Unless I'm misinterpreting what you mean by 'genetic determinism'.

Lol to do my reading for social science classes if it was dry I would go out to a forest and take like maybe 1 or 2 hits and man could I focus... it was crazy.

I'm an addict and like to overdo weed though cause it takes stress away though. Stimulants I hate how they make me feel but they work, though I'm having trouble convincing myself having speed in my body for the next 25 years is going to improve my life and health overall...

This has been a pretty thoughtful and somewhat insightful thread. You guys are all very bright.I'm a lot older than most of you guys but I think I can contribute to this thread.

I'm positive that I have ADD and had ADHD earlier in my life (ring finger much longer than index, BTW)....I also have 2 sons that were/are definitely ADHD. My deal was that I could not concentrate on one thing during early school years (this was before ADD or ADHD were even invented) The solution then was to hold me back a year which def. helped but it was still difficult to grasp some of the concepts in Algebra or Chemistry...I had to read things twice or three times to retain the info.

I made it through high school even though I was smoking weed every morning, noon and night  from 9th grade on.Mostly with the help of a friend or two. I was also drinking a lot at an early age which turned into full blown alcoholism later in life. I got married early because of a pregnant gf  and had a child just after HS graduation.
Lol, he was a wound up kid from the beginning...fast talking and always moving. When he got into 1st or second grade the teachers kept calling us in because of his class clown behavior and constant acting out , although his grades were good. They called him ADHD right from the get go and recommended Ritalin. We were also in the middle of a divorce at this time, so that probably played into his behavior.

Ritalin (methylphenidate) was looked at as this miracle drug for teachers as it transformed these misbehaving, disruptive kids into model students. I believe that school nurses could actually prescribe it back then...around 1983-1984. I was in a  2 yr. business course night school at Johns Hopkins at the time and I had a Technical writing paper to write so I chose Ritalin as the subject, to see exactly what was behind this magical concoction. I'm going by memory because I can't find my paper but I do remember most of the facts that were burned into my memory by sheer shock.

I found that The terms ADD and ADHD were actually coined by a pharmaceutical company called CIBA in the early seventies. Ritalin was tested in inner city Baltimore schools and was shown to be beneficial to the behavior of unruly kids...The study was done by a guy named John Conner that worked at Johns Hopkins (who conducted the study)  if you want to look it up. They also did some other testing like EEG's and stuff....they actualy found that a Child's EEG graph on Ritalin was almost identical to a man's EEG under the influence of cocaine. Their brains were working almost the same. Ciba pushed this drug to all physicians, pediatricians and, of course, school nurses and aides. They couldn't explain exactly why this stimulant seemed to settle down ADHD kids but would stimulate adults....so they coined the term "paradoxical effect". to describe it.They also said that kids would only need to take it until puberty (which turned out to be false)
They used promotions like cruises or other vacations for those that wrote the most prescriptions. It was crazy and criminal in my mind (partly because I had done a lot of cocaine by that time and there was no way I wanted my kid to feel that way all the time) so I took a stance against it and went all the way up to the child psychologist that almost insisted my son take it, also, my ex wife was for it...I presented these facts and said no way is that kid gonna take that and eventually won the battle.

He, like me had to study harder and try to learn to listen by cutting out distractions ....doing things like closing your eyes while listening to someone so you wouldn't be looking at that person and noticing that their face was red or that their teeth were yellow....things like that. Anyway, he made it all the way through HS and trade school without the use of stims....he has recently tried some of the new ones like adderall and some other but said they worked but were not worth the side effects.

My second son was extremely disruptive in school and his mother, who had primary custody, decided to put him on it....he went through 2nd grade through graduation while taking it and it did him well. He excelled in math and science/ computer stuff...was obsessed with video games...and was mostly a loner. He stopped taking it on his own after he graduated and has adapted pretty well...said he will never go back on it.

Personally, I'm still on the fence about stims and ADD but, realize that it does work and do what it says it does for those that are affected by this disorder. I still have trouble following conversations sometimes, especially when there are a lot of distractions but have mostly taught myself to block that stuff out and put my attention on the speaker. I haven't had a mind altering substance in me for almost 20 yrs now (other than mushrooms, LSD and DMT) and only do them very occasionally. I like the fact that I sleep when I am tired and I wake when I've slept enough...there is no imbalance and trading of substances in me to override the other.Called"living better by chemistry" Lol, don't get me wrong,It is really tough sometimes, I run a business where we have distribution rights all through the US and Canada and am the primary sales guy...I just did a sales call/teaching seminar in Atlanta to 12 managers of companies across the US for 3 hrs. It was crazy at times when I get questions from different people at the same time...but, I held it together.

When I got sober from drugs and alcohol in 1999, I told myself that I never wanted to be dependent on any mood or mind altering substance ever again. Turns out, I am dependent on some RA drugs but that is it.
I'm not sure why I wrote this block of diatribe...I guess, your conversation just brought up some memories....whatever you decide about these meds, just think through your decisions.:sunny::peace:

This is some fantastic perspective and commentary. The chemical imbalance thing is patently nuts I agree--found that out more from their own literatures indication of methodology/reasoning. It's like saying pain means theres an endorphin imbalance and you need opies. They only got away with it because its the brain.

I'm going to reflect on what you've shared for a while. Thanks for making such a big contribution, Thay

ADD/ADHD meds were great at first but ended up putting me thru the ringer in a major way. They have an uncanny ability to rewire your brain’s internal reward system. And, aside from the psychological and cardiovascular isssues they tend to cause (long term), I think their most harmful attribute is the fact that they subconsciously manipulate you into believing that you cannot succeed without them.

I’m cynical about this issue for sure, but there’s My 2 cents

I’ve taken adderall and ritalin (was prescribed ritalin around 10yrs old but never took it) and my concern would be for any kids that have a little more anxiety than normal.  Considering they aren’t the most self aware those pills could spin them into some anxious episode and never see it coming because of the stims..

The thought of a kid on amphetamine is a little concerning..

I remember being uncomfortably like... that full feeling in your chest adderall gives you off a 10mg IR working at McDonalds years ago and I turned to hand a lady her food out the window but she was turned around to the back seat pouring out a pill bottle to give a kid who must have been 10 the exact same blue pill and something in me squirmed...

I think it's a great tool, but I think it's folly to take them daily. Leads to burnout and negative side effects. I think it's best periodically, and never several days in a row.

I often get a headache if I break one of the above rules, and it leads to melancholy in the days that follow.

I push other buttons sometimes too, and since many share brain systems, I have experienced the dark side of them, perhaps, more frequently than some.

Moderation and balance, while cliche, seem to be the safe way with many things.

While I am fascinated by nootropics or anything to boost performance, I am weary because I find that there is no silver bullet.

Finally, I think that vitamin B, meditation/mindfulness practices have the potential to help with attention/concentration to some extent.  I didn't realize that the way individuals process Vitamin B differently, and some require more (based on genetics, diet, etc.). Mindfulness is safe, free, and accessible to everyone who seeks (finds?) it. A lot of good research reports that mindful practices helps with a host of conditions (e.g., attention, depression, anxiety).

Party on, Garth. :mikemyers:

Yes, mindful practice can have lasting effects. However, true mindfulness is like trying (er, not trying, for those Buddhists/or those who engage in mindfulness) to catch the white rabbit. The minute you think you catch it, it is gone. Er, at least that's my impression. Nothing you can hold for too long.

I think most American definitions (for research) are similar to: “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” Some definitions also include an "attitude of curiosity and compassion"

I was fortunate enough to select this topic years ago while browsing for a research idea. The research has only grown and been reaffirmed by personal experiences and insights since that time. Mindfulness is actually "stolen" from thousands of years ago. It is an ancient tradition that Buddhists practice. Of course, to make it palatable to the American public, it had to be redefined and narrowed to words such that it could be studied.

Peace!

i have add or adhd, whatever you wanna medicall correctness call it.  i hyper focus on random shit and completely get distracted from everything i need to be attentive to.

so i've been taking ritalin for years.

amphetamines are too harsh on my dopamine and give me headaches and increased depression.

it's nice in that it helps to get work and study done. it's helped me to advance in my career and physique.

it dosen't last long like fucking vyvanse, but thats just too much. it's like a mild version of cocaine that pokes my brain in constructive directions. some modafinial would be nice.

I do not like any sort of pharmaceutical amphetamine.

from age 7 to 14 I was forced to try well over 30 different ADHD medications in order to treat my so called "ADHD." All of them sucked and had terrible side effects with little to no results.

The only thing that helped me with my ADHD is Cannabis. Once I tried cannabis it was like an immediate switch went off,
SUDDENLY I SOMEHOW stumbled upon A CURE!?
It was indeed a tremendous moment that I still remember.

My pops has ADHD and he says that was one of the first things he noticed too was it completely nullified his ADHD as long as he was medicated enough.

ANYWAY I read somewhere that Childhood Amphetamine use could possibly lead to a development of Epilepsy later in life, Well I became Epileptic on Oct 25th of 2016. Now I don't remember where I read that claim of "possible link between Epilepsy development later in life and repetitive childhood amphetamine use," I can't provide you with a clinical study of such thing, But yeah...I got no proof that those meds caused my epilepsy but I'm sure it didn't help it. Either way past is the past.

All of these amps have been way over-prescribed for years. There was very little long term testing done way back in the beginning, that was one of the things that turned me away from it. I really haven't followed it as much lately, but from what you guys are saying, the long term indicators are not good.

Seems like it.

I remember in like 2012 or 2013 I think I was supposed to get 120 adderall and there wasn't a single pharmacy in the city that had enough stock to fill the whole thing so I ended up getting 90 IIRC.

The DEA restricts production but the APA and CHADD dont try to throttle dosing kids so...
