No prep substrate, for bulk, straight outta the bag! Black Kow Revolution. * 5
    #25546266 -

So this my attempt at a tek.  I will explain what Black Kow is, and how to use it. I'm not a pro,or super science based grower, I'm not even sure whats all in it. I know it's .5.5.5 in nutrients, and I don't even remember what that is,lol, if your looking for that information your on your own. So lets begin!

    .BLACK KOW THE WHERE,WHY,AND HOW.
So Black Kow is a manure, compost mixture that comes in 50,25,5lb bags. I have only found the 50lb bags at Wally World. Supposedly its sold at the big box stores, Ace,HD,Lowz, etc.

Why I use it is simple, You can grab it straight out of the bag, really, no prep, no pasteurizing, nothing, just use it "as is". I realize prepping substrate isn't very hard, or time consuming, but what BK does is allow you the freedom to spawn whatever, whenever, and how much ever you choose. May not sound like much, but IMO, its a HUGE advantage.

How to use it: GRAB SOME FROM THE BAG AND MIX IT WITH YOUR SPAWN. That's it! Seriously, done! The bags will vary in moisture, and whats in it. There's sticks, rocks, chunks of wood, worms, and who knows what else, but IMO none of that matters. What I look for when I use it is the consistency in the moisture of it. I've had dryer bags, and wetter bags. All bags have had some big clumps, and mixing clumps with the loose material helps a lot in a dryer bag. The wetter bags I will empty the bag into a big tote, leaving the lid open, or cracked seems to dry it a little. I have used dry,and really moist stuff with no issues. I do try to break it up by hand while I'm adding it to the spawn, but that is all I do to it. The other point I want to touch on is the clumps after mixing it with spawn. Its got clumps, I do break them up, but I don't obsess over the material being too fine, or a level substrate in the tub. I know lots of people strive to have their tubs level, and well mixed(spawn, substrate). I don't care, and I haven't seen a noticeable difference. Be as lazy, or as picky as you want.

    QUICK OVERVIEW OF PROCESS.

    -Find Black Kow

    -Take some spawn

-Add spawn and Black Kow to your tub, mix the two together by hand.

Here's some results using Black Kow as substrate.

Here is a side by side of Black Kow, and straight coir. These were from a b+ isolate lc(13.7), one of the BK boxes had a different isolate(3.5), I wanted all four to be the same isolate for a fair comparison, but I screwed up when I was making them with some others. The two isolates preform very similar so I included it in the experiment. Both coir boxes had the 13.7, I purposely put the 3.5 with the BK to be fair.

Nice write up. I have seen it a million times and I already have horse manure but I might just grab a bag and do some shoeboxes with it to test for myself.

I’ll probably do some straight from the bag and a couple others pasteurized to see how it holds up.

And the three numbers are usually NPK. Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium.

Also if you go to the official Black Kow website, they have an entire section dedicated to their process if anyone’s interested and claims their compost gets up to 150F and specifically mentions microbes as we talk about them, but doesn’t say it’s pasteurized but instead says it’s composted for 3 months. They also claim to basically leach and turn over bulk rows weekly or more (depending on the rain) and let it dry out under the sun.

Good shit. :cookiemonster:

Nice write up BigSurMoon. Pretty pleased with how things are going so far with SOTBBK. Can I get props for the acronym?

As you know I'm also testing 5 different LC's straight to unsupplemented BK but pasteurized on this first trial to give it an extra fighting chance. We'll see if it has enough nutrients to go all the way to fruits.

I'm going to look to see if I can grab some today.  Since it's technically manure?  Can it be used with pans?

One of the LC's I'm testing is Pan Cyan.

Coir is already pretty simple when it comes to prep but this certainly opens some doors for species that are a little more dependant on manure.

Hadn't seen it but I would be interested to know if he ever got anywhere. I haven't done any prep or hydration only pasteurization with roughly 30 cc's of LC in each qt jar.

Price to volume also.  One brick of coir is about 5 dollars,. That's the price for a bag of black kow that might do more then one tub.

Nice work BSM - I've followed your other thread from the beginning and it looks legit.  I just put some PE:BK 1:1.5 in a shoebox last night - hope I can replicate your results!

We have a similar manure (Kraal manure) that I've been wanting to try out, but there is almost no information about how they process it. Urea and nitrate content may be on the high side. I'm real keen to try it out now.
