Substrate Prep for Filter patch bags
    #543165 - 02/07/02 01:56 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

How should I go about steralizing the substrate I am going to put into my filter patch bags?

Pressure cook them in jars then empty them into the bag? Is there any risk of contamination if it is done that way?

Any ideas?

I've never worked with bags but its my understanding that you put youre substrate material in the bag then PC it then let it cool then innoculate. I'm pretty sure thats how it goes...bassplayer74

Place all of your substrate in the bag and seal it with a impulse sealer or tightly wrap a zip band (those plastic things that some cops use as handcuffs) around the top of the bag. Sterilize the bag in your PC. Once cooled, remove the bag from the PC and inject your spores into the bag (swab injection area with isopropal alcohol first) and seal the hole with a piece of tape. Place bag in dark warm place and you are good to go. If you are dumping colonized rye berries or birdseed into the bag of substrate instead of spore injection; I would recommend opening the bag and dumping in your berries using the oven tek to minimize the chances of contams getting in your bag.
