peruvian torch x san pedro hybrid
    #25513789 -

There's seeds for sale for a hybrid Trichocereus peruvianus x T. pachanoi  (peruvian torch x san pedro).

Are there any advantages to this that people can see? Or disadvantages? (With regards to potency or growing). thanks

People are going to want to know the origin of the San Pedro, is it PC or not? A PC Pedro cross could yield a faster growing but less potent plant.

I assume compared to e.g. getting the parents pure: Pach or Peruv?

I'd say not really. Compare it to humans and races: for a healthy and productive individual the genes in general from its ancestry are primarily important. Interracial offspring is different, not better or worse. Traits will still depend on the exact parents.

Even if you would have hybrids of different Trichs like that but with both parents being named clones (i.e. a renowned ancestry), while the gene pool should be great, there is really no telling whether the genetic interactions are an "advantage"... a step up or down, not to mention that a lot of that is subjective.

Just remember that the first name in the hybrid is the "mother" that produced the seeds which apparently can play more of a role in the expressed traits than the father.

By the way in terms of potency I doubt that there has been enough growing of hybrids (which are kept reasonably clean genetically such as by cloning as long as possible) plus the testing of potency of hybrids, to be exact of enough specimens that the variation is averaged a bit.

bottom line: pick what sounds interesting to you or - if you can trust the source - see if you can get offspring from named clones (better yet just get clones) if you want at least a chance of above average genetics.

Thanks, yep I meant compared to getting pure parents. Thanks for the info, you make some good points. There's no further info, I hadn't heard of this before so wondered if it took better qualities of each (eg if one has a faster grown rate) but you're right, without further info it's a bit of a lucky dip. I might also grow/buy pure parents. The seeds are only $3 which is cheap for here so I might only get them as an interesting addition.
