San Pedro Flower

I don't know if any of you remember, but a few months ago, I posted a picture about one of my San Pedros that had started to grow a small bud. Well the bud grew to about an inch long and stayed that way for at least a month, didn't grow or do anything. Then just a few days ago, I looked at it, and it had a massive growth spurt, and had actually began to look like a flower. Here's a pic of it that I took earlier today.

So, have any of you ever experienced anything like this? where the bud pops out of the side of the cactus, then doesn't do anything for a while, then grows 4 inches in 3 days? Also anyone have any estimates on how many days untill it fully blooms? Thank you, come again.

Well I got this one as a cutting from a large san pedro that my friend has in his yard I'm not sure how old it is, but by the size of it, I'd say its fairly old....10+ years, at the least. I will be sure to keep you guys updated and post pics when it blooms....I will also make a point of smelling it frequently

Odd, I also just had a san pedro flower about a week ago. The petals are mostly dead and falling off, but its supposed to form a fruit within a few weeks.

let's think back to 6th grade science. what is the role of a fruit in flowering plants?

What has to happen in order for it to form a fruit. The pollen from the flower on the pedro has to? Can it self-pollinate?

you'll need another pedro (or another trich! a hybrid would be cool) flowering around with a different DNA than your pedros (it can't be a clone). this is for them to avoid interbreeding and so to have a richer genetical variety, blablabla, blablabla... cheers,

It is possible for certain plants to self-pollinate, though i'm up in the air as to whether a pedro will do so if it isn't pollinated by another member of the species.

the species trichocereus can be cross pollinated. i have a peruvian torche, san pedro cross. its not all that odd looking, except for the fact that it has long spines, and short ones. i dont know what it will grow up to look like...though it has some size to it now. its a 20" cutting. ill post pics of my garden when i get my camera back -m69-
