Hey, Is it necessary to put gravel over the soil? I would've thought that this kept the soil damp or is it used for keeping the soil warm?? I just got 2 small pedro cuttings and one big old Peruvian torch in the mail and im about to pot em. They look pretty healthy apart from a few scratches. im pleased

as i understand it, it's a general precaution against the introduction or root rotting contaminations.

kewl...i didnt know there were cacti people here too!...ive only been into fungi for a couple of years, but ive been a CaCtUs FrEaK ALL of my life!!....to reply to growing peyote from seeds...im Native American (90% Osage) and have had MANY experiences with this . i have also tried to grow it from seeds. i can tell you this, Peyote is so SLOW GROWING, it almost doesnt make it worth while as it would take so so long to get a button big enough to do any thing with. (mine didnt grow worth a squat eather) if your going to try again in the future, i would do an enviromental type search for growing info as i believe the peyote must go thru a specific weather and temp cycle to grow from seeds. as far as Trichocereus Peruvianus (Peruvian Torch) and Trichocereus Pachanoi ( San Pedro) go, if you need cuttings, let me know as i have TONS of healthy growing POTENT cactii. i also have a supplier here locally i can buy them 1-2 year rooted and growing with buttons for pennies. im ALWAYS open for trades on spores..........

you prompted me to pull on my boots and go take these pictures out of my starter bed.........

ive got ( if i were to cut it all down and weigh it) around 1500 POUNDS of these two bad boys...origionally, these two here were in a front yard of a lady that lived down the street from me. she was having her home relandscaped, and i asked permission to dig them........she gladly gave it as she didnt like them around because she was afraid her grand kids would get hurt on them. here in california, these two cacti were used so widely in landscaping some years back that they are perfectly legal and extremely common HERE, especially in my comunity.......
just my two cents worth!

Does anyone know of a link, or can explain how to get them to produce seed?
Subject: getting SP and PT to seed
its not to difficult to get these to seed as long as you have a couple of them already growing and producing flowers. youll have to take the flower from one and brush it on the flower of the other. and vise verse. if you only have one flower per (which is most common), you can do the above with a cotton swab or a little paint brush....just remeber if you get swelling buds NOT to pick them. let it completely dry out ON THE CACTUS. if the bud begins to split, you can make a seed catcher out of heavy paper. cut a shallow funnel out of constuction paper and put the small end around the base of the bud and tape the edges. this way, when the seeds fall, they will go into the funnel instead of on the ground. remeber also to do a search on the growing conditions of the specific species your attempting to grow from seed, as they all have different enviromental requirements needed to induce seed germination!
