Various noob questions

I'm experiencing some issues after my first ever grow ranging from wanting clarifications to straight up concerns. Hopefully you all can help. There's quite a lot I'm asking, sorry, but I do need help.

Using PF Tek I put five cakes in a SG chamber, I have no thermometer or hygrometer but I air them often and spray at least a few times a day or when the sides have little condensation, I usually gently spray not too much aside from the first spray after work.

1. 3 of the 5 began fruiting within a week and a half or so, 2 still have not and I haven't kept track but I believe it's been 2.5 weeks now. Is that bad? If it's bad does it mean they're probably contaminated in a way not obvious to a noob? I should just be patient?

2. A number of the mushrooms grew rapidly and were large compared to the rest but no cake produced more than 2 of these larger ones. The remaining ones are small and most of those grew from the base of a larger one. After harvesting the larger ones the smaller ones grow seemingly ten times slower or perhaps some not at all.

3. The myc in spots on some seems to have a slight gray hue. Perhaps it's the side not ever facing light or perhaps it's from poor FAE? Perhaps it's mold?

4. Would the harvesting of the large mushrooms impact the growth of the rest? I've seen some posts saying to harvest all at once but the reasons why are beyond my experience level but I guess now it is time to learn.

5. At least one cake only produced 2 mushrooms which were both large and therefore harvested and no longer is fruiting, when do I know when to dunk again? And is it fine to dunk cakes individually?

6. Despite the issue of most of the mushrooms being very small with a couple large ones why did some cakes produce upwards of ten mushrooms and others only 2? This may be related to my first question.

I learned a couple weeks ago that sometimes the lack of FAE makes the myc take on a furry appearance which still freaks me out even if it's safe but when combined with grayer looking splotches it freaks me out. But I did give them a lot of fanning and the furriness seemed to disappear, but admittedly the past few days I haven't given them that level of attention and so no surprise they have that slight fur on them again, but the gray is there too. Not a deep gray but the myc had always had a sort of eggshell or beige white, not gray like these splotches. That's kind of freaking me out.  Admittedly it also sort of looks like dryness I don't know.

When you mist you should only be misting the sides of the chamber. I personally like to soak the perlite every 5 days or so depending on humidity in the room. I've never had consistent results using pf tek.
It could be a contam, but they generally show obvious signs

Answering numbers 2 and 5, I'm guessing you used a ms syringe. I would make an lc from one of the strong ones and move into grains personally. MS will always have inconsistency because there are thousands of different bodies battling each other for dominance.

The slight graying is questionable and pics would really help there. Mycelium should always be a brilliant white. With occasional bluing from stress.

Not sure about the harvesting together. I've personally not had any problems taking one cake and then removing it for a dunk while the others continue to grow.

Dunk when the cake feels less spongy and starts to seem dry.

Over all, the PF tek is a great place to harvest yourself a specimen for a liquid culture, but thats about it. I think you should research grains and bulk substrates and your levels of success should go through the roof in comparison.

why? i don't agree with that. misting cakes or bulk subs is totally fine and even beneficial.

I am searching prior to asking. There's tons of information but a lot either isn't clear, is buried in nuance that must be extrapolated to my context or is even at times contradictory. Just asking for some help if anyone feels like helping.

:whathesaid:  Past practice was misting the walls, but current practice says that the past practice was....dumb. Give the moisture to the sub :thumbup:

the search bar is quite a cluster fuck until you learn the value of the "posted by", "trusted cultivator" and "within __ years" options. find users that you trust and search for their posts regarding a subject or just click the tc's only option and see what all the guru's have to say. also setting it up to show only posts made within three or four years helps filter out a lot of old useless bullshit. like, "don't mist your sub". it's ridiculous

I agree they've likely been answered before but there's tons of conflicting info in the posts.
The best I can advise is use the ''newer than __ years'' to hopefully get the most recent, up to date info.
