First and foremost I would like to apologize for making you read this thread.
Ok, I just harvested my crop this morning at the asscrack of dawn but was somewhat disappointed with the results.
My first question is that my harvest was small in size and what could have caused this. Is it too high/low temps or high/low humidity? They had thin stems and were about 2-6 inches in height.
2. A couple had blackened caps. Not fully 100% black but they were a good deal black. Is this safe to eat still?
3. One can dry them by placing them in a bowl full of rice and in front of a fan? That's what I did cause I have no dessicant.
4. I didn't have extra casing to fill in the holes where the shrooms were so I took Miracle-Gro Potting Mix, moistened it and then put it in a microwave for 5 minutes then remoistened it and applied it to the casing (I know it wasn't a smart idea but it was early and I didn't know what to do). Will this affect the rest of my casing?

Dont apologize thats what this website is for. Im not experienced enough to answer your questions completely but I can tell you that the "blackened caps" were probably spores the floated around the warm air inside your chamber and landed on your caps. As for "why" you had thin stems I could take a guess but I dont wanna give you wrong info, someone else will help you with that Im sure. Good luck and shroom on....

Thanks man, i appreciate your help. they are edible still right? I touched the cap and it rubbed off in the area that i touched and underneath was the normal color cap.

1) When growing casings too much humidity can stunt growth. But 2 - 6 inches aint bad for a first crop.
2) Blackened caps are caused by spores dropping, yes they're safe.
3) Fan drying works fairly well. Problems arrive in a humid climate. You might consider "finishing " them in an oven. Preheat to 100, no hotter, turn oven off and put your pre-dried shrooms in there. About an hour later they should be "cracker dry".
4) Your casing should be fine, but we try to avoid mixes with chemical fertilizers.

Hey puscle,
you said to finish off the shroom-drying by sticking them in the oven for an hour... I just wanted to know, is there any smell when doing this? I would guess not, but if you have any experience doing this, please let me know... Thanks.
