stupid (?) spore question
    #973690 - 10/18/02 11:59 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Is there any way to obtain spores that will work for growing from a bone dry mushroom? If so, please explain.
(sorry for the noob question, but hey, im new at this)

If the cap & gills are intact? Under sterile conditions, one might try to bisect a tiny portion of the gill out & go to agar with it. Because, under most circumstance, spores still cling & remain on those gills.

Im guessing he does not have an agar kit, so I will tell you how to maybe do it an easier way

MIght not work, but, its worth a try.

Cut off the cap from the mushroom, and drop a few drops of water on the dryed cap on some paper. Cover with a plastic rubbermaid or whatever to keep contaminant spores and wind movement to a minimum. Should allow some spores to drop...at least to make a spore syringe..

you could alwayas go the route of honey jars, drop the cap in the honey water and wait for mycelium to grow.
Chances are though without agar you most likely will get a contaminated syringe or honey jar.

Most of the spores will hav dried up and blown away or fallen off. If you do come across a few, they will likely be contaminated.

Good luck!

you'll need it....

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses. I live in CA so spores are hard to get and fresh mushies are hard to come by, so any help is greatly appreciated!

this one kid claimed that he was able to grow by putting spores on bread and added a little water and put them in a closed container. I never saw the end result by Im pretty sure it would end in contamination, what do you guys think?
