Can creativity be learned or should I just give up now? * 1
    #25440794 -

I have always thought that it would be a tremendous blessing to have some creative outlet such as writing poetry, drawing, painting, writing stories, etc, to express my misery...

But, as is the case with most things that I would like to do, I have been too lazy to take any steps towards learning to do any of these things.

As you can see, I am capable of composing readable sentences, and I have two functioning hands, so I am physically able to do, or learn to do, these things.

Mentally, though, I don't think there is any hope.

Some people just seem to be able to effortlessly produce volumes of poetry or art, but not me.

I have tried many times to write poetry and all I seem to have in my brain is tumbleweed, I can write nothing.
Perhaps I could do it analytically, composing sentences that rhyme and fit together, I might be able to write one line per hour or something, but it would not come from the heart and it doesn't feel natural or creative at all, it just feels like an insane loop of trying every possible word until it looks right.

I thought that weed and psychedelics would magically give me creativity, but no. No dose of any psychedelic seems to be able to make me do anything creative, the mushroom gods speak no poetry to me, I can draw nothing while tripping, I am capable of drawing rudimentary things but never creatively, only copying them as best as I can.
Psychedelics seem to be amplifiers of creativity... If you have none in the first place, they won't give you any it seems.

I have tried microdosing and it helps me a lot in many ways, but it gives me no creativity.

So I guess the question is: Is creativity something that can be learned, or is it a case of "you've either got it or you haven't"?

Poetry appeals to me most of all, and I love reading it, and I'm very jealous of people who can write poetry like it's as easy as ABC.

It doesn't even have to be good, that's the thing, I would be happy if I could write the worst poetry ever, but I can't even do that.

Also, a question to those who are capable of writing poetry, do you have to analyse every word, consider if it's the most suitable word, and then write it down, only once you've perfected it, or does it just sort of flow from your mind?

The thing is, I'm reasonably capable of expressing ideas or feelings, but only in a direct and non-artistic way, for example I could describe the visuals from my latest shroom trip better than "um I saw moving stuff", but, again, I'm only describing something real and unambiguous, I am not expressing my feelings thus.

Thanks!

Take some basic drawing, pottery, or sculpting classes in your area and see what you like. You might need a little structure to get you started.

Creativity comes from dedication, focus, and practice - the appearance of effortless creation is generally a result of years of learning and application.

I play the blues harp with the appearance of effortlessness, but it took two years of practice to even begin to feel competent, and years of playing for a couple hours near daily to reach my current point - and I know I'm still learning, even if that isn't apparent to the casual observer.

Same with all my creative talents.

Find something you enjoy and stick with it - you'll surprise yourself.

This is your main problem right there. No one starts off making something perfect. It's always a work in progress through determination and time. Constant learning....

Like Malc said, try to take classes somewhere. It might also help you to stop being lazy since you spend money on it. The best class I took was design, not drawing or paint, just design. The class was awesome in that it made me really focus on doing specific things bc the work was always prompts. Like make a design out of lines, out of circles, draw an emotion... like the prompts were almost so simple but after we all shared it was amazing to see what other people came up with.

Yes. Can math or history be learned? Yes.

A big influence, but not meant as boundries, are the principles and elements of art.

Google them. Learn from them and go beyond.

It is entirely possible that you have simply not found your creative calling, and thus you feel that you lack creativity. It can help to learn about various artistic efforts, and give them a try.

Even within poetry, there is so much variety. From simple to complex, and from rhyming to random nonsense. It seems that any sort of poetic expression, there is someone who will enjoy it.

I think that the most important part of artistic endeavors is that you enjoy the results or are satisfied by the process. This can carry through to the experience which others draw from it.

I used to do a decent amount of poetry and other creative writing. Once I began learning more about music, songwriting became my primary poetic outlet. It gave more of a drive behind my writing, and increased my enjoyment and satisfaction.

Another thing which has helped me was to begin to think of living itself as art and creativity. Living in an artistic and creative way encourages art to be a part of my life, and makes it seamless. It still takes effort, but even the effort is rewarding.

As long as you don't judge yourself for not being stephen king or van goh on your first attempts at creativity then I would say your creativity can grow. It's like a seed or muscle, if you water it or excersise it, it will grow. Don't water it or excersise it and it will die or shrink.

i feel that the key to allowing creativity to flourish is to create a sort of magical circle, in which all outside forces influencing the 'critical attention' mechanism of the ego are banished.

I had very little creativity I thought.  I found my medium now though and I love it.  (Glasswork)
