Panhandling

How do you feel about this issue? Specifically, cities across America are attempting to make panhandling illegal. The government is running up against the law of the land, as it has been determined that panhandling is an act of free speech. Still, this has not stopped governments from making panhandling illegal due to "safety concerns".

Instead of recognizing that a majority of this country is barely earning more than the poverty level, the government seems to be trying to ensure you will have to work.

What thoughts are out there?

Most panhandlers can and should work, but I do think people should be allowed to panhandle as long as they're not being aggressive or on private property w/o permission.

Sometimes I'll give money to panhandlers who seem to be legitimately homeless. Pretty much anyone who lives outside here year round has severe mental problems, brain injuries etc. But fuck those guys who beg at highway offramps and intersections, rake in the money, and are probably not homeless. GTFO the road.

As a person that has given away many thousands of dollars when Im not even a person that has much I would say
I've had too many instances where I've been kind and generous to people just to have them turn around and rob me when Im most vulnerable. Its not really the lost money and things that make me ill. Its the spirit of someone that would be ok with doing that.
99% of beggars are chronic grifters. It makes it difficult to tell when someone is really in need of help.

Well i used to support them before i moved to the city and had to listen to them everyday. Now it's more of a fuck you i'm tryna walk kinda thing.

i've pretty much stopped giving out money.  i will give people food, as i always carry snacks in the truck.  most people turn down the food and ask for money, but some of them are pretty grateful for the food.

last time i gave some folks money, they were obvious tweekers parked at a pump at a truck stop.  said they forgot their wallets, yadda yadda.  but they had two young kids with them, so i felt like it would be appropriate to toss them $5.



in response to  OP:  i think panhandling being recognized as free-speech is completely bogus.  it's kind of like pissing in public being a fine line between free-speech and a civil offense.  in my small garbage town, there are lots of panhandlers who have been doing it for 10-20 years.  they have places, either camped out or trailer park, etc...but refuse to work.  they drink openly, smoke cigarettes and start shit, aggressive dogs, and so on.  fuck those kinds.

They get no money from me. Sometimes if they are mentally ill and couldn't work if they wanted to then I might give them something. Instead I give that money as a tip to workers.

I like when they say they drove 200 miles from their home with their children and now they are out of gas and money. Like why would you drive your kids to a kmart 3 cities away without money.

Or they just so happen to run out of gas in a gas station parking lot and need you to fill their tank. Do people actually do that?

I saw a dude panhandling a year ago outside fred meyer. He had no legs and was using a skateboard in place of a wheelchair. I gave him a $20. Said he lost his legs in iraq.

I generally try donating whatever bit of change on Me to the Homeless when possible, or perhaps giving a cigarette hand out in place of change if asked or prompted to.

But Everything-Handling is a better occupation than panhandling.

I didn't understand pan handling as a kid and was asking for a few bucks in a big store so I could buy more candy :lol: Someone called the cops who then followed me to a Boys and Girls club to give me shit for it. I just wanted some more damn candy :shakefist:


Anyways I think pan handling should be legal when done reasonably, plenty of people pan handle so they can travel and afford basic necessities. Others pan handle with smart phones and fancy clothes which is pretty shitty, tons of people actually need that money...

If in the future we implement a universal income then perhaps it would make sense to make pan handling illegal. Especially now that crowd funding is so big, if you really need the money for something serious there are better ways to get it then pan handling.

Oops I mean hey this is America!!!  last I heard this country was free (unless you want to go anywhere, eat anything, build anything..  oops looks like we cant talk now either).  I live on air, but they wont have none of that breathing business either by God.  Its okay though, I am all about having a winning attitude of optimism.  The decimation & mass deforestation ( and no EPA regulations) the air aint worth breathing anymore anyway.  They can have their "free" whatever... by free I think they mean consumerism. 

I notice more and more how everything is the opposite of what America claims.  Its kinda fun, really keeps the people on their toes, not knowing which way is down and what way is up.  and that's just how they want them.  Brilliant
