How Do You Deal With Panhandlers? * 1
    #4922547 -

How, do you deal with them? In your experiences, what have you told them?

When they ask me for change, I tell them that change comes from within.

Punch them in the jaw, and take the change bucket. Its the only way they will stop, and get a job. Think of it, if every time a poor person asked for money for crack or beer, they got busted in the mouth, they would stop fairly quickly.

I once met two bums once, one just constantly screamed 'change' over and over again at the top of his lungs. The other one was making flowers out af palm leaves, and he had a bunch in a bottle of water. When I asked him how much they were selling for he told me.

"How ever much you think they are worth."

I paid him two bucks and took a flower. When they are hitting people up for cash outside of the doors at a store I find that a little ridiculous. If they are doing something or providing some type of service, I feel more inclined to help them out. But people living off of the charity of others gets annoying after a while. Especially when its the same ones hitting you up day after day.

I live in preppy white boy town, USA.. my first experience with panhandlers was in D.C. and I brushed them off.

Then I thought, fuck, maybe some of these people are really down on their luck and need some help.

Fastforward 2 yrs.. myself and 3 buddies went to Montreal. This homeless dude Charles was asking for money; didn't seem cracked out or anything. We're all like, "Sorry man" and then went and bought him and his buddies a pizza. :rasta:

i hate that. they SEE you with a full pack, so you have to feel like an ass and just say "no." otherwise you're out of a pack of cigarettes in like an hour. this is most frequent at bus stops, i've noticed.

i had a bum scream at me "HEY! GIVE ME A DOLLAR!" when i was walking by, and i just said, "that's not the way to ask." and i walked away. that shit pissed me off. who the hell does a bum think he's going to intimidate? he was an old black dude, i could have kicked him in the shins and pranced away giggling.

usually, though, if the bum is cool i'll give them a couple quarters or a dollar or something. fuck, i don't need it, so why not.

For me it's a mix of feel and my physical situation. If I have loose change I can easily get to, and I get the feel from them like they're someone I want to help out, then I give it to them.

This deduction of what I "feel" about them is based on nothing short of eye contact. I consider myself a good reader of people. I dont' care if they're gonna use my change to go do drugs, what I care about is if I think I'm giving change to someone who's liable to be a rapist, a murderer, some low-down dirty thug of some sort.

Sometimes I'm lazy even when I have loose change.

There's no roadmap for "dealing with" beggars. For me at least.  And in NYC, they're a dime a dozen.

There are two or three beggars that I just know, and have known for about 5 or 6 years. They recognize me too, and I don't see them very often, but when I do I'll give them a buck. Otherwise, I don't like opening up my wallet in front of a homeless person.

It's just too tempting for those of them who want to fall back on petty theft to survive.

Depends on their story, some panhandlers I tell I only got plastic, however I seem to run across a lot of truly desperate people. I give them what I can.

Two days ago, some lady was stuck at a gas station and had run out of money. She was kind of dirty and obviously not in a good way. Gave her three bucks for gas, a bottle of orange juice, and a couple of cigarettes. I still wonder what happened to her because I haven't seen her in my neighborhood since. I'm more than happy to help displaced people trying to get somewhere but for the most part I don't give money to the panhandlers, except the ones selling the local homeless newspaper. Those guys are alright.

Real bums and especially crackheads annoy the fuck out of me. On more than one occasion I've had intense moments where some shit might have broken out. But for the most part I realize they're just sick people who need help which I cannot provide for them... however, if they bother the person I'm with or get threatening, I tend to go a little nuts.

^ well what you can do is stand perpendicularly to them, as well as a few steps away from them, so that they can't reach the wallet, and if they try to make a move you can easilly kick them or whatever it is you want to do.

that's usually what i do when i get money out for these middle aged women I referred to.

[i've never encountered a real bum on my own, which is good i guess, it might be an intimidating experience.... but who knows]

I usually give out some loose change to some of them, if I have money in my wallet, i never open up my wallet to let them see i have more then that, they usually are near bus stops, to use the excuse that they need bus fare. It might be true..but I have given out a dollar in change before, but not much more then that.

I spent time on the streets as a young man and I got to know the homeless population well. After that experience I will no longer give money to a randomn person on the street. There are too many of them that don't deserve it and I don't want my charity going to the wrong types.

If I have time I'll stop and talk to a homeless guy. It usually doesn't take too long to size a guy up and get a feeling for what is in his heart. If the guy seems like he really would benefit from and appreciate my charity I'll offer to buy them a meal or a beer or whatever they want. I might even just give him money if I don't have that much time to kill. But if I don't have time to at least chat with them for a few minutes then I will not give my money to a stranger who approaches me.

Most of the local bums know I'm a local as well, so they refrain from asking me for money or weed (we normally just nod or wave in acknowledgment of one other). I don't kick down change often, but if I dine out and have untouched leftovers (such as fries), I always give them to the first bum I see. And if a bum buys liquor for me, I always encourage him to pick something out for himself in the store.

However, if I'm in a pissy mood, I usually retort that "I need money too, and you don't see me flying a fucking sign." It's hard not to feel annoyance with the people who've been flying a sign on the same corner for months or even years - especially people with signs that say things such as, "need money for gasoline" or "spare a nug." Who doesn't want free cash for gasoline or weed? Goddamn, most bums are richer than me.

Overall, I think more bums are scammers than not.

My first experience with panhandlers was in DC, some dude was standing around soliciting all the students taking field trips to the Smithsonian. Fucker had on Nike shit from head-to-toe and it seemed insane to me that he had the balls to shake that fucking half-gallon jug in my face and hit me up like I owed him something. Even his tone of voice made me want to slam him upside his fucking fat head. That shit doesn't fly. You don't stand on a corner with $100+ worth of clothes on and ask for free shit. Plus, he had tons of cash/change in his pan already. It was practically overflowing. You could hear him shaking it from several yards.

I've been around several bums since then that were much more needy than that son of a bitch, and I did for them what I could once I talked to them long enough to get a feel for their personality. Usually just a buck or two, or some food.

Once, though, I ran into a couple of guys who were obviously homeless. One of them looked to be near death, slumped over against his friend who was busily choking down some cheap liquor. After making sure the other guy was OK (obviously just passed out drunk) I stopped to smoke a bowl with them, they didn't even want any nor did they ask me for anything. I gave the conscious one a fiver.

normally though, i tend to avoid bums. like the fucking bastard who steals shit off our porch.. when we stopped him, he told us we should give it to him, because he didn't have it. silly bastard.

Ive been the kid writing on the side of the street, with a cloth out in busy downtown minneapolis spanging for left overs.

If i know its a traveller kid like me, (its pretty obvious, ill help em out pretty decently if ive got the means.) - anything from a place to stay, a nice meal, a thermous, jacket, compass, socks, coffee, beer... I just see them as a new temperory friend, and the same comes back to me.

If its an old homebum thats respectful, i usually try and give them a decent kick down of a couple bucks..

if its a drug addict ill deny them and maybe say something.

if its an alcoholic i might give them a beer.

I'll usually give all my spare change to a bum.. judging by his aura, eyes, tone of voice, and choice of words. Some of them actually deserve AND need it.. and I'll gladly help them out (provided I am not broke and hungry at the time too.. )

Once though, this woman in raggedy clothes approached me asking for spare change because she was stranded and hungry. I didn't get good vibes off her (even though she looked like a sweet old lady and was using very choice words), so I said sorry I'm broke.. this is in a rich area mind you.. not some slum. So I go to the park across the street and sit down and smoke a cigarette and just kind of watch her for a while. She asks everyone who comes up for some money, and 7 times out of 10 she got it. I saw her get handed dollar bills several times in a span of a couple minutes.

So after everyone leaves.. I see her glance around for a bit.. then she strolls to the parking lot in the next building over and gets in a brand new mercedes and drives off.

This sounds terrible, but depends where I am. If I'm in a place where a lot of people are known to do hard drugs, I don't hand them anything and just tell them I don't have cash. You can tell which ones are addicts because of the damage the drugs do. Don't get me wrong, I give when the time is appropriate and I don't give money. Some people take advantage.

I have very limited exposure to this excerpt when I lived in Georgia for a year. There was this one fellow who would sit a block from where I was staying that would just chill and play guitar and sing all day. I went and jammed with him a few times. He waned to split his $ I refused and he bought me a coffee anyway. Besides that I usually give what I can spare after I talk to them for a bit. If they are not sociable they get nothing.

Where I live now, homeless die in the winter so they just don't come this far north into the desolate woods.

i was standing outside KFC last night, eating a sandwich, and this black homless lady walks up to me and said: "exuse me, sir, do you have any change to feed the hungry and homless", and i told her no, and walked away

You've sufficiently made me hungry for some KFC.

So 10 1/2 years later he managed to make you hungry?  Talk about bumping a long dead thread!

I read my decade-old response to this thread.  In the time since then I have hardened my opinion even more on the homeless.  The recession in the economy has swelled the homeless population quite a bit, but the folks who have added to it are mostly lazy fucks who are younger and healthier than me.  And many of these pieces of shit have learned that they can make a better living off the bleeding hearts of people who actually care about others than they can working.  A lot of these guys have mastered the art of looking the part and they play the role well.  They have great sob stories that are very convincing.  But so many times in recent years I have caught these fuckers in lies or seen them walk off from their street corner down the block to a parked car that is nicer than the one I drive.

I'm not saying there aren't people who need help, because there are.  But giving money to a random guy is not helping anyone.  Give to charities, volunteer at a shelter, and if you want to help anyone directly make sure you have vetted them thoroughly first.  Because if you give money to the wrong guy not only are you wasting your money on some piece of shit, but you are taking that money away from someone who really needs help.  If you hand a random stranger a dollar and think you've done well you're deluding yourself.

I almost always ignore them. One shined my shoes the other day though, and did a real good job so I gave him a few bucks.

How, do you deal with them?  In your experiences, what have you told them?

When they ask me for change, I tell them that change comes from within.

I give them money because a dollar to a starving person is nothing to me and the world to them. Or just give them food.  Man up. Help out.

Change comes from within?  If my house had just burnt down or my kids just died and I lost it and was on the streets and you told me that.......jesus.  Change comes from within? I just can't get over how immature and simply rude that is.

That is a prick thing to say for sure.

But how immature and rude is it for a grown adult to stop strangers and beg them for money?

Might be the last desperate act of a person who had been kicked in the balls by life. Might be a cold scam. Judgment needs to be used.

"sorry, I have no change today."

"Sorry, i'm a broke college student."

I kickback to some panhandlers, but not others.  It depends on their vibe and stuff.  I give Louie like 10 bucks a week because he is amazing.

I was homeless before for a couple of months. Not long and not super serious. I wasn't a crazy person, drug addict, or felon. Just a kid that got kicked out with no friends and in a the middle of a recession.

I went to the county building and got food stamps. $200 a month. Since I wasn't out begging for money for food, I was able to spend my time going to different temp agencies looking for work, going to the library and searching craigslist for jobs. You know, doing things to better my situation.

Eventually one of the temp agencies sent me an email for an interview. I had zero job history as well so it took a little while longer than it does today for me to find a job. With my first check I gave almost all of it to my sister and asked if I could live there, she said no but changed her mind a couple days later.

If your not an obviously insane person, I won't give you money. But I learned out there that a lot of homeless are just not all there, that's why they are homeless. When a 21 year old kid is asking for money outside a liquor store and he has a big ass dog and a skateboard and a cool hat. I just roll my eyes.

I deliver food for a living from many top restaurants, make sometimes the customer puts their work address instead of their home address. So I get to keep the food, most of the time it's some fancy pants bullshit I wouldn't eat. So I try to give it to people begging. It's a lot harder than it seems sometimes. I've had to throw food away before because people wouldn't take it.
