Perlite in bulk substrates?

Perlite is often used in pftek to keep humidity up up in the fruiting chamber. I've never really had issues with moisture content with tubs but I've been seeing a lot of dry tubs. Im assuming with certain "strains" that take longer to colonize this might be the problem. Has any one experimented with adding perlite to bulk substrates to retain water?

It doesn't retain water its a rock. It has water on it's surface for a while. It just takes up space in a substrate and would provide aeration but we don't want the substrate that deep it goes anaerobic anyway. Vermiculite acts like a sponge and holds water
