I think guns actually have very little to do with the issue here, and making this into a gun issue is ridiculous.

laws don't make things "go away", you can't just make a law and then expect the problem to disappear, this is shit-brained thinking.

do you really think gun laws will make you safer?

I hate guns, but you have to understand the type of political manipulation that is taking place here, the political opportunists will leap at a chance like this. These opportunists love a shooting or a massacre because it gives them grounds to rail on with their political platform.

Enacting political change in response to massacres is a very dangerous way to be conducting politics.

I think after these massacres, rather than making laws, we need to be mindful of how we treat others, if you treat people with kindness and respect they won't go crazy and kill you, at least 99% of the time this is true. So if you see someone having a hard time, listen to them and be a friend, this is a time for love, not laws. Do something good for another person, try to help those around you.

Then, what is the time for laws?

Seems like taking guns away as a result of mass shootings has worked in every other country. UK, Australia...

Please tell from a legal standpoint raising the age slightly is taking away their rights. Does the alcohol age wage prohibition on 18-20 year olds?

uh... Current law should have prevented the last couple shooters from buying their guns the way they did. In the case of the vegas shooter, the military didnt properly comminicate with the FBI about his dishonorable dishcharge which should have made him fail the federally required background check.

In the case of Florida, The FBI were tipped off several times, police have been to his home many times, he posted videos of him Shooting domestic animals with guns on the internet. His mother was even considering surrendering him before the shooting.

The current laws failed at every level... Making it clear that more laws that almost entirely only effect good responsible people like me are not the Answer.

Do you agree with the drug prohibition?

Between 1999 and 2016 Drug overdoses have risen %150 to almost 70k deaths in 2016

compared to only 11 - 13k firearm homicides each year

Between 1993 and 2014
Firearm homicides have dropped %50 in US while number of guns per person has gone up %50

All those stats are from the Centers for Disease Control

The Idea that firearm violence is an escalating issue in the US is a blatant Fallacy...

That chart is truly misleading, to the point of being fraudulent. The scale for guns per person increases 50% over the full range while the homicide rate scale increases 100% over the same range. Visually, this makes the increase in number of guns look far more significant. I wish people had more sophistication when it comes to the the way visual representation of data can be so manipulative.

More importantly is the fact that dividing the number of guns by the the population tells you nothing about the way those guns are distributed within the population. While we have more guns now than 1994, gun ownership has actually decreased by nearly 30%. We have more guns because a very small number of people are buying a lot of guns.

What this means is that as  gun ownership rates have fallen homicide rates have fallen as well. Fewer people have guns and not surprisingly fewer people are being murdered.

Good post.  I like when people understand real world data.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

You have a strange definition of "very small number of people."  According to your source, 36% have guns.  That's like 100 million people living in households with guns.

Lemme rephrase. Most of the guns are owned by a small number of people. Something like 5% of the population own half the guns. The rest of the guns are owned by the other 31%

So you're saying that 5% (~16,150,000 people) own half (182,000,000) of the guns.  That means that those people, on average, own 11.5 guns each.  Also, 100 million others own about 1.8 guns each.

Considering the number of gun deaths per year (~15,000), it sounds like America is doing very well at practicing safe and lawful gun ownership.
