I understand one's pessimism.
When looking in at Nihilism.
I don't think a lack of meaning.
Stops content fullness seeming.

You see beauty resides in the futility.
Like the changing of seasons.
Simplicity within complexity.
Without needing reason.

To understand is to never exist.
This doesn't mean happiness should desist.
It depends what you do with same.
You can get serious or treat it like a game.

To believe in nothing does not a Nihilist create.
If it were so there could be no debate.

I've stopped.
This is a meaningless existence.
Beautiful but meaningless.

Doesn't each individual have a separate purpose and meaning of life? That's my personal take on the meaning of life, sometimes it takes some people almost a lifetime to tap into their true role or meaning of life in the universe.

There is many more been and gone then there could ever be now.
What does a legacy mean anyhow.
Are you striving for real change and what would that look like.
Will your actions last once your inevitably out of sight.

Will the universe be more or less once your gone.
In time nobody will care.
No matter how brightly your light shone.
So why do we play fair.

We strive as though there is a finish line.
As if there will be winners.
That we can reach it in time.
Purposeful intent creating sinners.

Gluttony of self importance.
Hypocrisy of self impotence.
We allow ourselves delusions of grandeur.
Perspectives of nothingness seen as slander.

I am not important and neither are you.
This doesn't mean an easy shot through.
You see the choice is to strip away the lies and too look deep inside.
Then without validity, love like a mother when their newborn cries.

Is it not your fault? If it's not what couldn't you have done to make it different? What didn't you do to make a change for the better?<--- the answer to this question is not everything/nothing but you can answer it yourself, or think about it when you see a problem with/in your eyes.

The presence or lack of the ultimate meaning of the universe is not predicated on my actions. I did not create the universe. It created me. Therefor, if there really is no foundational meaning to my life, or anyone else's, that connects to something greater the individual being; it cannot be a product of ones actions. I think you are referring to something different than me. I believe it is worth distinguishing between a personal and a universal meaning to life.

This is where I think happiness lyes. Through identification with the overwhelming forces that simultaneously create and destroy life. In some ways it is a very Christian perspective. Like finding salvation through the death of God, his crucifixion. It is also a very Pagan way of seeing the world. It is possible to chart how Christianity evolved from Paganism using this line of reasoning. But now that Christianity is a myth, we must frame it through art, science, culture, maybe your poetry :super:

If the underlying premisses constantly change then what kind of truth is it? There must be some logical foundation if we are to take it seriously. Mind you, most people get by without needing any logical foundation. People like us are the minority in this sense.

I do not understand why you can't find meaning in activity and pursuit, and realization of goals. Action in this sense would be any means towards ends (including activity of thought in some inquiry, like for a philosopher, or in making art, and other abstractions). Well Aristotle basically said it.

Quote:
Every art and every inquiry, and similarly every action and pursuit, is thought to aim at some good; and for this reason the good has rightly been declared to be that at which all things aim. But a certain difference is found among ends...

Aristotle Nichomachean Ethics

I take it you disagree with this premise, but why? Is it because what is commonly called good isn't written in stone somewhere for us to follow? Is jt because good is "subjective"?
What if what is pursued as meaningful is both in the steps we take and meeting of concrete consequences in the world, while this evaluation is as a whole (concerning what is good in general theory) is what we might call subjective at the same time as we live this?

I do not mean to convince you on a personal level of any meaning. I just think if you are looking for a sound basis of argument (even if any conclusion or realization is subjective) this is actually one. Well take it or leave it or maybe blow my mind with an argument; that is my policy.

Here is another philosopheme that I have found useful. Maybe existence is not futile in terms of meaning, but just has its apparent end and we learn to accept and realize our ends in this way?

Quote:
If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself.

Martin Heidegger

I tend to think that means, come with meaning, in ends. Q

No, it is you that disagree's with the quoted premise although you don't seem to realise it. When you state:

You fail to see the forest for the tree's. You mistake the finger that points for the moon etc. The "good" as I am describing it is significance at the universal level, what all religions in one way or another offer. If ones activity is not in some way connected to this good then, no, individual pursuits will not suffice.

I enjoy and agree with Aristotle's premise in the general sense, as it is stated; not as an additional speculation about universality you are ascribing. That seems like your concern.

If you know a bit about the text you are claiming to interpret, you know that Aristotle's conception of the good is grounded in happiness and human flourishing. This can be entirely individual, although this good is also not for any reason limited to that. For Aristotle the good flowers through a common ground of philosophical inquiry, for instance. But it is a philosopher's conception for that! It is something we can to some extent talk about, agree to collectively pursue in general, but not as any preconceived universal. The good could still be entirely subjective, and personal even as it does open into a broader conception.

Maybe I was not following enough of the previous discussion to understand your particular concern, but how do you suppose that a philosopher, or any man or woman for that matter should be concerned with "universals"/religion in the way you are? Why is this necessary for meaning, for you? You can't attribute this to Aristotle, but maybe you can explain. Why are you claiming to speak on others' behalfs about this necessary universal meaning?

Aristotle was not describing any universal "good" so far as I can see. Look at the statement. "The" good, is nominal. Nominal means we have a common name for what it is we value and tend to seek in the world. We can also talk about  it and perhaps agree in certain practical situations. But what is "Good" is something we generally compare to other things and we tend to seek it as the result of our actions, as a value. Nothing says this nominal good must be necessarily universal as well.

Aristotle anyway doesn't suppose from the beginning of his inquiry that the good has to be universal. He says the end of our means is always "some" good. So Aristotle is pluralistic. Maybe there is more to say about this; what we call good, and something more common to our conception, but maybe the question stays in this provisionality. So really what Aristotle is asking is what is the good life...to you? This question can go beyond an individual's conception, but is it necessarily universal? Does it need to be? So I would say I agree with Aristotle's nominal conception of the good, and that we can inquire into what we call good.

I don't understand your position:

Quote:
The "good" as I am describing it is significance at the universal level, what all religions in one way or another offer. If ones activity is not in some way connected to this good then, no, individual pursuits will not suffice.

Suffice for what?

Okay that's it for me tonight. I am putting the rest to the forum to consider and I'll follow along a bit from here. Maybe you can make a general statement to the forum of shy you consider universalism/religion necessary for meaningful life. It is good to see you take the questions seriously; but I do not think I am not a universalist; at least in terms of  general arguments (of which I suppose, I am happy that this is not all of life.)
