How can I calm my eyes when I want to meditate

Well I'm a total nub. I just started being interested in meditation, but it's something I want to pursue.

Having only tried it once, I already have something concerning me, and I thought it was going to be a problem for me before I even did it.

If I'm not dead ass tired my eyes just FLICKER like crazy when they are closed. It's like my eyelids are just going apeshit trying to open themselves, and I have to keep myself from opening them.

Anyone else like this? Any like...things I can do to make this easier? Is it due to the room being lit?

This is a wierd question now that I've written it, but, maybe someone knows what I'm talking about.

It might be easier with the lights off, if you want to keep your eyes closed. There is no rule that says that you have to keep your eyes closed when you meditate. I usually keep mine about 1/2 open. Maybe that would work better for you. Try either focusing on one spot on the wall, or try crossing your eyes slightly(focusing on an imafinary point about 2-3 feet in front of you). I have found both of these ways to work well.

yeha...i cant have any light near. I have to hide the lights on my cable box and VCR because sometimes i unconsiously crack my eyes and i can see them. If its completely dark i dont even notice...untill im about to project..then im like wtf are my eyes open cause i can see everything..but there closed lol

dude... you don't have to close your eyes when you meditate... just that can help you to focus better...

Try this for practice... turn of all the lights and light a candle... gaze at the candle and let that be your meditation... tune out all thoughts and distractions and just be the candle.. that single flame flickering.. let it entrance you.. go into it.. feel it.. lose yourself in it.

That's a good concentration practice.. another thing you could do is before you meditate, take some deep and even breaths, and then manually go through your body and relax all your muscles... starting at your toes.. feel every muscle relax.. and work your way up.. every last tendon and muscle in your body should be relaxed.. all this while you are doing the deep, even breathing.. you should find your eyes may relax.

After meditation you may find it easier to control this flickering of the eyes. Just don't worry about it, the point of meditation is to simply concentrate, so concentrate.

maybe like clinch your eyelids as hard you can, keep them clenched and count to 4, relax them, count to 4, clinch and keep them clinched while you count to 4, relax them, count to 4, etc. do 3,4 clinches like that. Then repeat counting to 2, then repeat counting to 1. Then just like clinch them and relax them to the count of some music.

I don't know if that will help you meditate but you'll be popping quick as michael jackson.

quit smoking so much pot. i'm just guessing you do because eyelid tremors are common with stoners, as far as i've read anyways. i used to get them as well..

but yeah i'd say meditation is more effective when your eyes are half open. closing them all the way makes you more tired and (for me) increases the chance that you will lose concentration and start daydreaming.

so so true... I always had these "eye flickers" when I was an every-day stoner... now I don't have access to so much pot, plus I have really important exams coming up in a month and a half, so I get my kicks through meditation. Also I'd recommend doing some yoga postures before meditating, especially the Savasana posture ("dead man posture") Here are some instructions that might help...

i don't do that posture much but i normally meditate in the lotus position. and do a few other stretches every few days.

I alaways focus on my third eye. And clech and release every muscle in my body. From the feet up to my face one muscle group at a time. And deep breathing using your belly to draw in air. As you become more relaxed your eyes should adjust but remember focus on your third eye and be a concious observer. Your eyes will move less and less as you concentrate on this spot in your mind.

thats a good posture for when i finish yoga focused on da abs, it's soooo relaxing if ya can get in that "state" and just lay there totally relaxed. what is the lotus positon if any one has a link? as im new to this too, peace.

I like to meditate in the bathroom. Because of the tiled walls, it almost completly blocks out any outside noise. So I sit in my bathroom in the dark with my eyes shut, and beathing slowley. When I do this in the summer, I sit in the bathtub (empty), because its nice and cool. I find that I can meditate really well in the bathroom. I dunno it works for me, maybe for you also. Everyone has a bathroom.
