Meditation tips
    #7472591 - 10/01/07 12:37 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone who can successfully enter a full meditative state, please send some tips/hints my way. I have been trying for a while with no success. My mind is way to active. And I am too aware of my bodily feelings of discomfort sitting still.

Clear breathing, then get comfortable. pillows, blankets the whole shibang.

Take 4 or 5 deep breathes, slowly.

then close your eyes as you are to begin to fall asleep. BUT DONT DONT FALL ASLEEP THAT RUINS IT!,

Then start relaxing, from toe to head, toe, to head.

then after your musles start deeping, think of nothing. VOID. the enteral darkness of space. Concentrate.

Your brain should be at peace for some time, try not to over think blackness or you'll end up in the devils pit. (When Thoughts become wired on the backup sugar)

what feelings of bodily discomfort are you referring to?

First I would suggest sitting in the lotus position if possible, tho this may add to the bodily discomfort you mentioned in which case it is best not to. The lotus position helps stability and it clears your head. I would suggest reading up on different positions and see what is most comfortable for you. I would say as far as position goes the most important thing is to keep your back strait and your muscles loose and relaxed.

Regardless of what position you choose I would also suggest spending time stretching before hand. This helps to loosen you up and, at least in my experience, I feel more focused and alert afterwards.

I would also suggest that when you first sit down just take a series of deep breaths and imagine all of your tension leaving your body on each exhale.

If you have trouble staying focused, which is very often the case for beginners then I would suggest counting your breaths. You can do this in various ways from counting each inhale, exhale, or both until you reach ten and then starting over from 1, and repeat. Counting will greatly improve your concentration. If you lose track then just start from one again. Even this may be hard at first by stick with it and you will notice you will get better at this.

Pay attention to what time of the day you are most alert. It is best to meditate when you haven't just eaten as this tends to make you tired.

The setting is also important in my experience. I always try to keep a clean room and I take care of all of my duties before I begin, and if the room is dirty I put everything in it's place. This will free you from worry, and wondering thoughts. Try also to find a place without the sounds of human voices or anything abrupt. Monotonous noise is fine, it can often even be peaceful and calming. I would try both, maybe in nature the sounds of the wind or birds will help keep your thoughts eased more so than the eradic thought patterns you may have in complete silence.

If you are serious about it a change in diet will greatly help as well. Limit, or eliminate, your sugar and caffeine intake. These tend to make the person anxious and have racing thoughts.

The last thing that is coming to mind now is your eyes. I suggest trying with them both open and closed. While closed is the easiest to do, specially at first, I have read, and through personal experience, found that that may also help you focus more much in the same respect the calming background noise I mentioned earlier can.

If you do choose to have your eyes open you should keep your head strait, do not move it to look down, but you should look downward as to keep your eyelids almost closed to minimize the need to blink. I find it is best in doing this to sit near a wall or something that is not distracting and looks rather bland. You do not want to focus on any one thing, and if you are doing this right everything kind of just seems to blend together and fade off in my experience.

That is all I can think of right now, I hope this has helped, if I can think of anything else later I will add it as well. In the end I would say the most important thing is just to sit and keep it up, you will eventually get better. Whenever your mind wanders just recognize this and go back to counting your breaths. However, I would suggest that if you start to become tired and restless that you should just quit. Do not force yourself to meditate if you don't feel in the mood, this can often be counterproductive.

I feel positions arent all that great, alot of them are just stupid, just basically get comfortable, and you can start relaxing your brain.

but i have read that they do help, so im not bashing them.

I don't think they are overly important but they do help keep you centered and your mind focused. Though I would agree with you, the most important thing is to just be relaxed and comfortable.

That actually helped quite a bit, thank you.

To explain the bodily discomforts better. My body is not used to just sitting cross-legged and doing absolutely "nothing". When I am sitting I am usually conversing, or playing games in wich my mind is occupied. When I sit with no noise and no stimulus, I all the sudden feel everything. My muscles, my skin, sometimes the beat of my heart, and my awareness of these things discomfors me in the process.

I think stretching beforehand will help out greatly.

The Doctor says I have Bi-polar and an anxiety disorder. I dislike highly to use it as a crutch for anything, but in the case of my thought process my mind, when attempting to think of nothing starts trying to think even harder about every. Everything about the days occurances mostly. Such as things I could have done better or more/less of.

I have tried thinking of 1 object, but my invading sub-conscious takes hold and morphs and changes the 1 object I am attempting to hold on to.

Thanks again for the help.

Try it while 'coming down' off of some tasty buds.. you know when you're zoned out not really thinking of anything.

Thats how I got into the practice of just letting go and not thinking of anything.

Its relatively easy to do while sober now.

I would agree that trying while smoking may be beneficial, I have found it has helped to keep me focused, though I don't feel I can get in as deep of a state as I could sober. However, the first time I felt I truly got into a state of meditation and not just sitting there thinking was right after I had smoked some pot and I was just lying in my bed on my back too.

Another thing I just thought of for the ambient noise type of thing, for me the most calming thing I can think of is the shower running. It is a consistent soothing sound for me. This may not work for you, but it's a thought.

If you want to be comfortable,

Do it before you go to sleep. Lie on your back with a bunch of pillows propping you up slightly. Put a folded up scarf or a small pillow or something underneath your calves so the heels of your feet don't get sore. Put your hands by your side or on your lap.
