Ok so i've been thinking about trying meditation. Does one need faith in some religion to succesfully meditate. I do not believe in god but i believe meditation could benefit me.

Also, any info on meditation, and the "how to" sort of thing would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

sorry for bringing up the post and only reading the first 5 posts (shoulda read it all) but i just wanted to add a little.

"does one need faith in some religion to succesfully meditate"
- Absolutely not, it was actually religion that adopted the method from spirituality (spirituality and religion = 2 diff things)...or more of gave it a bad name... cause people say its just like praying... No, its not, PRAYING is however a method of meditation..sitting there concentrating, focusing..etc. Except prayer is aimed at one basic idea, worship of some deity - praying to your invisible friend, w/e.

I can hallucinate just by meditating, i have a friend who has been doing it for 2 years and can (and sometimes does) do slight meditations WHILE FUCKING DRIVING! thats a bad idea, but its good training for focus... his ego is at the wheel and mind off in meditation... He's told about a time where it got so intense while driving he had to pull over - things started seeping through into this reality.

We go through a trip every night (due to dmt in the pineal gland), dmt is in (neerly) everything, and in all humans.... hence everyone has the potential to reach this psychedelic state on their own, cause its not in only a specific minute group of people - its in everyone. Through meditation i've reached these points:
-Self induced Hallucinating
-Self induced body highs (head rush's, body vibrating with energy feeling, cerebral highs, STONE rock feeling where your whole body is numb/tingling, that feeling you get as if free falling into never ending space with - like your just zooooming through space fast...kinda gives you butterflies in stomache.
-ORGASMS of many kinds [ie head/crown chakra ecstasy feeling, INTENSE butterflies, and my favorite the spinal cord feeling, as if a dragon is shooting up from your spine in pure ecstasy.]
-Complete relaxation, enabling for EASY organization/review of your life. Helps you concentrate/focus on specific ideas/theories/concepts/inventions/emotions/feelings and focus on the most single minutely small hard to grasp thoughts one at a time without getting everything all clustered and mixed up.
-STRESS RELIEFFFFFF
-Getting high naturally
-and im sure theres more just don't want to type more then i already have

Meditation has also helped me get better at things such as:
- Lucid Dreaming
- Exploring the mind/life
- Bringing those hidden great ideas from your subconscious: ie inventions, philosophies, theories, etc.
- Helps unleash your genius mind, and its incredible secrets that we only know 2-10% about.
-Tantra and kindulini yoga
- Really helps you discover yourself, the actual you, the spiritual being who is living a human experience, and has lived millions (probably even an eternity)of other experiences in other materialized bodies (or non-physical bodies as well). Salvia, acid, and mushrooms all helped me see this stuff in a BAD-trip type of way as well...sometimes while meditating i will actually get bad flashbacks, like for instance i once had this trip where it seemed like things just kept repeating... were never ending...eternal...as if you fall asleep and wake up right when you do so in another world, only to fall asleep and really just be waking up again...as if there really ISNT a such thing as sleep...like your conscious all the time. Even when unconscious you are still in your subconscious... and your subconscious is still and always awake (or idling while your in this conscious), almost as if its the consciousness/mind of your soul/spirit, not of YOU in your body living on earth...the you YOU that remembers the many lives you've lived and deaths you've died in probably every possible way. Sorry, this probably makes no sense..

Meditation is a whole other world...its your world, you do what you want; jump in the air and fly, walk into an empty grocery store and eat all you want, raise an army of killer dear, fist fight george w. bush, WHATEVER! You can even experiment with objects/people in your dream world, go up to them, touch them...ask them questions... and if you happen to drift off into a lucid dream by accident, and realize your dreaming and just know your going to wake up for realizing your dreaming, SPIN IN CIRCLES IN YOUR DREAM, it keeps your mind in that conscious and helps you maintain your dream state so you obviously don't wake up. I do it all the time in just normal dreams.

If you want to cheat and have an almost automatic self induced hallucination without learning to get pro at meditation.... find a sensory deprivation tank 'salon' (if there is one in your area) and go test one out. OR make one like i did...its easy. What it does is deprives your sensories...all of them. Touch, feel, hear, smell and seeing. Its a dark box, filled with 1 foot deep of 80'ish degree water with 800 lb. of epsom salt disolved in it (makes you float so you can relax completely and feel like nothing) and thats it... after 10 minutes in one of these things you'll be meditating with no control haha. Smoke some herb beforehand and you get an even more intense experience.

They are also known as flotation tanks.

And no, nothing bad will happen to you like in the movie "altered states" unless you go in there on some dmt, go into a trance, pass out and drown...thats why they have little night vision cams in some of the chambers, so your wife or whoever can check up on you every 5 minutes ;p

(((PS - to avoid any arguments about i've typed, i'm going to say this: The views expressed are those of me, my beliefs, they are what make sense of my life and 5 years from now will have probably changed...the older you get the more you learn and the more your perception of things change. I am not saying THIS IS HOW IT IS, i'm not saying god is stupid, im not trying to get you to believe in energy, im not trying to say this is how things are (ie you have a soul, some may argue that there is no such thing as a soul, and once you die you die its done over, nada, zilch). IT's just what i believe because of my many horrible trips i've had, salvia especially, i've felt what death is like - to be nothing anymore, with no life...no actions to be manifested, to just lose it all and feel every emotion of every feeling/action/thought/love/hate/etc rush right through you all in a split second, your whole life just flashing before you ... Thinking you've lost it all. I've also had my rebirth type of experiences, especially with dmt, going into the tunnel of light, but never reaching the end because something was telling me i wasnt ready...(duh of course i wasnt, i was still living a life, and still am...i wonder if i could have seperated my body from soul by making it to the end, permanently leaving this body on earth lifeless...just as someone i know who did acid, thought they are a glass of oj and a their friend tipped him over...and it really just fucked his consciousness up, he fooled himself into thinking he died and really did. .

I believe what i believe because its what i've experienced through meditation/life/psychedelics/bad&good trips, and because of these experiences my mind has set itself to a certain perception of things. So please don't take it like i'm speaking matter factly. I am athiest/agnostic, i do not believe in god, i believe in what i've experienced, and use science/logic/understanding/knowledge to apply to certain beliefs, so as to be able to reason if it could be a useful/beneficial/harmful/blasphemous idea.))))

Hmm. I've been interested in mediation but.. I doubt I could do it.

On one hand, I'm depressed and I can't think properly or concentrate or anything and I feel quite 'empty' most of the time. Wouldn't this emptyness be quite useful for meditation??

On the other hand, I'm very nervous and anxious most of the time so I can't really 'relax' and I'm not sure how.

The first time i had a successful meditation with hallucinations was when i was realllly depressed.. i just walked into my room, and layed down in the dark and just zoned out... wasn't tired, jsut careless...didnt give a damn...was all relaxed and stern....just starring off...then it happened, i learned one of the many tricks to meditation... If you stick with it you get better... if you start now...after 2 years you will have it down really well, and thats just if you do it on and off randomly.... i havn't meditated for about 1 month or 3 actually now that i think about it....damn.. but i could easily fall into it whenever needed.

You could achieve it in just 2 months if you worked at it every day. There are many who get it just after a month...and some are just born with it, usually are the kids who never hang out with friends, always with themselves, they have good imaginations...Meditation is great with depression. But something better, i would say was a 10x salvia trip. Go have yourself one, and make sure its not one of the kinds where you just laugh the whole time... You want one that will rip your spirit from your body and take you into the eternal space...to help you understand why you love life so much more then the empty nothingness. You'll feel all the emotions you've ever felt and realize why you use to not be depressed, life is just a play to me heh... i just do whatever, act out whatever, manifest whatever...have fun with it. Maybe even some mescaline...that always makes me feel reborn and refreshed, san pedros., u can buy them on ebay.

And so, for the first time in my life perhaps, I took the lamp and, leaving the zone of everyday occupations and relationships where everything seems clear, I went down into my inmost self, to the deep abyss whence I feel dimly that my power of action emanates. But as I moved further and further away from the conventional certainties by which social life is superficially illuminated, I became aware that I was losing contact with myself. At each step of the descent a new person was disclosed within me of whose name I was no longer sure, and who no longer obeyed me. And when I had to stop my exploration because the path faded from beneath my steps, I found a bottomless abyss at my feet, and out of it came--arising I know not from where--the current which I dare to call my life.
Pierre Teilhard De Chardin (1881)
