Could you be friends with homophobes?

This might be a weird topic but I think it can cut into something more than just homophobia. Maybe racism too.

Anyway I've known religious people that are basically homophobic that I used to be friends with and I'm curious if you would defriend people that had homophobic or racist views?

Also I say this with the chance that some here may sure those views but I'd imagine it's in the minority here.

nah. couldn't be friends with people that gave that much of a shit about what other consenting adults do in bed.

I have several friends and colleagues who are openly gay, but I would also feel weird if I was friends with someone who was that concerned and judgemental about other people's lives.

All of my cousins on one side of my family are literal neo-nazis that live on a compound, grow pot, sell crystal meth, and breed weimaraners.

Actually they've always been really lovely to me. They're good people. When I had a seizure at the compound they called an ambulance for me despite the massive risk involved with such an act, and the fact nobody on earth except them knew I was on the compound. They know i'm bisexual and the worst i've gotten in my life for it is a wisecrack or two at thanksgiving.

I can understand the primal urge to reject homosexuality. I get it really. But it's not okay to judge someone based off preexisting notions.

This kind of "pit of the stomach" politic is what got trump elected. It's also what put the Assault weapons ban into place. It's why mescaline and pot and mushrooms are illegal while doctors give out tramadol like candy.

It's important to help ignorant people see the light as best you can. Kindness is free. Love your brothers including the ones indoctrinated with foolish or hateful beliefs. Love them more even because they obviously need it.

They're usually just hateful people in general, so no, I wouldn't be friends with them. I don't think I've ever met someone whose only real flaw was they were homophobic. It's usually accompanied by something wonderful like angry drunks who also happen to be alcoholics, slimy trash that convinces you they're trustworthy while fully intending to take whatever they can from you and stuff along those lines. Fuck those people.

I am friends with homophobic people. I used to not think much of it. I grew up in an extremely racist and hateful environment with a set of grandparents who were actual Nazis during WW2 (Opa in the hitler youth, Oma's father and brother were both in the SS) The other side of my family are a bunch of racist and homophobic red necks. For a long time I thought this behavior was normal and socially acceptable. It took a long time for me to get over my prejudices and even now I still struggle not to say offensive things without intending to.

I understand the other side about people being repulsed by this behavior because sadly I have pissed off and offended a lot of people in my time. Yes I am friends with homophobes (only one actually anymore, the rest of them seem to have matured over the years as I did). When I talk to people like this I try to help them understand that homosexuality is normal human nature and nothing to insult or even hate people over.

Friendships definition isn't set in stone for me, I suppose.
Also, you run into weird shit when you get to know people
so you really have to consider the complexity about how you feel about people.

So like just listing people I have met on Tinychat:

On tinychat, I often find myself fighting fire with fire. Sometimes the best way to change someones opinion is say the analogous thing to what they are saying. I'm a tranny? Well you asir are a nigger! Would you like to be friends now that we established I'm a tranny and you are a nigger? As we both are minorities with appropriate slurs?

Gays who hate faggots. Some gay people make a distinction between gays and faggots, the same way some people make a distinction between Niggers and African Americans. White people can be a nigger is somethign I hear often so maybe this logic has weight to it. However based off this logic, some "faggots" do nothing more than annoy me.

So would I be friends with a homophobe? Sure, but there would either be times where I DON'T have his back or would be forced to throw him under a bus.
