Why is holy water holy?

Is it safe to drink, as most water in the day was unsafe?

I'm pretty sure ancient peoples started blessing things with blood, and blood symbolizes life, also water symbolizes life, renewal that is, so I take it the blessing of holy water is just another way the Christian faith copied the old ways so they could attract more non-believers to their churches, they didn't want to use blood anymore because it wasn't civilized, I don't know, just my take on it.

I do know that Christianity copied many things from ancient cultures, like how they would build their churches on pagan holy sites, or carve the green man into the church walls, this way they figured that they could attract non-believers to their churches.  Christianity got mad at the pagans (country dwellers) because their old beliefs were so ingrained within them, they were not quick to accept the new god, so Christians demonized them, and tormented them for staying true to what had worked for them for many years, it's all ass backwards man.

History is written by the winners, which often means inaccuracies can be found if one looks hard enough.


Anyway, I don't know much about it.

It's holy because it's been blessed. I personally don't like the idea of Holy Water... I think it's all holy. I'm not big on Priests or Pastors. Titles don't make you holy... your actions and words do.

Look up John 1 5:7-9 "For there are three that bear witness in Heaven: The Father, The Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on Earth: The Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three are one.

Basically it is part of the closest thing we can get to the Holy Trinity in Heaven. The passage goes on to say the testimony of God is greater than man, blah blah blah.

Instead, you've just gotten nothing but a virtual rap on the knuckles with a ruler from a former adjunct professor. :smirk: Most every faith consecrates ritual substances (as Asante suggested). Your question is a good one, but there's nothing humorous about it, especially not irreverence from a profane lack of knowledge of the sacred. I, for one, don't take this forum for a joke. IMO the time is overdue to take this forum from being dominated by former classroom cut-ups, irreverent cynics, and victims of religious abuse, to college and graduate school levels. :yesnod:
