donating your eggs/sperm...

okay so i have been bouncing around the idea of donating my eggs. the first reason (which should be the last reason) is that it's good money. from what i am reading up on... i can get about $5000 or more depending on where i go. the other reason is, i don't know if i'll ever want/have a kid. so by doing this, i can help out a family who really wants one. i'm looking at having to go through 12-15 days of injections and then a 40 min proceedure.

my concern is, in a few years after doing this, will i want to know who my child is? i'm hoping this is something i can do and then not worry where or who my child is. i don't know... i really want to do this but i'm worried if it'll bother me in the future.

what are your views on this? i'm just looking for other opinions.

I've thought about doing this myself, but in the end decided not to. My reason was that I may feel like I won't ever want to have children now so it might not be a big deal to donate my eggs, but my feelings might change as I get older. Such as, I don't want to be 40+ years of age and wondering if there are people out there with my DNA wandering about, you know?

It is a good thing to do for couples that can't have children and I think you're a star for considering it, but just think very carefully about the long-term repercussions. Not just the physical process you'll have to go through, but the emotional stuff for you as well, in the future.

I think that you have to be able to live with the idea that you'll never be able to know who the child is though.

oi - it's such a big decision. i've passed the idea over the people who are closest to me and they all say "well it's really youre decision". also... if i get married or something - would it bother my husband that i have a child out there somewhere?

It is real good money, but just for women - men don't make much money at all for doing it.
-And the draw-back is that women have to take all those shots and what-not, and go to the hospital to have semi-dangerous surgury done every month.. that would worry me...

well the proceedure is only once. you take the injections to stimulate and then once the eggs drop - it's a 40 min proceedure to have them removed and all. there is no real effects however it might be a little sore or uncomfortable up to 2 weeks after the proceedure and you have a high chance of pregnancy up to 2 weeks after.

not only do i get the money, but i get free health check ups too.

i wouldn't donate...what is the point of a mother implanting herself w/ somebody else's egg? it doesn't make the child anymore hers if the baby grew inside of her, the child doesn't have the same DNA and that is the bottom line. there are plenty of children in need of adoption, so why create another life if it isn't even your DNA to begin with if there are children in the world looking for homes?

Donating eggs doesn't mean you can't have kids in the future, does it? Its $5000 for a bag of genes. I'd be more worried about the pains of the procedure, the downtime for the injections, etc.

Del, I've done a bit of research on this topic also. I would definately do it for the money. It may bother me a bit, but I plan on having a child someday of my own which may make all the difference to your decision. I just think of how much debt I could clear up and and of a new wardrobe.  :smile:
