My pet black widow just laid eggs, what should i do?
    #5771318 - 06/20/06 02:52 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

About 3 weeks ago i discovered a black widow in my back yard while i was high. i was very frightened. ive kinda had a fear of spiders all my life. i read up a little about black widows online and heard of a few people keeping them as pets. this sounded like a kinda cool and exciting thing to do, and ive been wanting a pet for a while anyways. i caught it and put it in a small terarium with some twigs and such. innitially i was going to raise it to fight the next spider i find, but ive grown attached to charlotte and now i dont think i could do that to her. its loads of fun catching crickets and other bugs and dropping them into her den of death. shes proven to be a very cheap and easy to keep pet.

However, she has just laid her first of possibly 12 egg sacs (over the course of summer) and i dont know what i should do. 250 to 700 spiderlings will be on there way in about 14 to 24 days. and they are small enough to crawl out through the air holes of her terarium.

Innitially i though i would pull the sac out with tweezers and just stomp it, but id like to try a more humanitarian approach.

what do you guys think?

yeesh thats a bad spider to keep around.
Take those bitches WAY out into the country, and let them loose.
Imagine if you woke up one day, and 700 black widows stormed you. That would be a shitty way to die.

get rid of Mama too. The only good use for a Black Widow, is to smite your enemys.
Get a puppy or something.

I have a rule, I do not keep pets that:
A. I am scared shitless of
and/or
B. That can kill me

If you have the balls to pick up the egg sac of a spider whom will defend it viciously, then take the sac and toss it into a mason jar full of rubbing alcohol. Then just leave the fuckers in there. Killing jar, it's called.

Not only that, the more spiders around the more possibilities of them killing anyone else. Do the right thing and kill those fuckers!!

I mean, they're black widows after all...

well, in the guy's defense, black widow bites are often not fatal... but they are nonetheless a very dangerous spider.

And, fun fact:
A person can only receive black widow antivenom once in their lifetime. Repeat use can cause death.

...that i did not know

before i thought about doing this i did alot of homework, they really arent that deadly. i know a guy whose been bitten 4 times. only 6% of reported bites are proven to be potentially fatal. its a pretty mellow and fascinating pet aswell. before i would just stomp any insect, especially a spider, but i feel ive gained a new appreciation for the beauty in all facets of life, even deadly facets. the only thing that i fear is the eggs hatching in my room so i suppose ill jsut take the sac out with a long pair of tweezers and release them at a local playground or something (just kidding) i think ill just put it somewhere where they wont bother anyone. i feel bad enough squashing a solitary bug now, i dont want to single handedly take 700 lives for no reason. bad karma i suppose.

I'd honestly consider keeping a pet spider as a means to help me overcome fear of spiders, but I think it would just wind up making me neurotic and paranoid about it getting out of it's terrarium.

I'd say you get the terrarium and release Charlotte and her spiderlings somewhere far out in the country. Why don't you get a tarantula or something. They're not deadly, they just hurt really bad. At least that's what I've heard. And you can play with them.
I'm also scared of spiders, well it's less now than a couple of years ago, but still I'd never keep one as a pet. I had walking twigs for a while in primary school.

Interesting how a few of you think anything that can hurt you should die.

Pluck the egg sack out.

The spiderlings will die in the cage anyway.

Having a den of black widows around your house is potentially fatal to you, your family, your friends - and other animals that may be around if they get bit. Do the safe/smart thing - take them out to a very remote area and let them free. Or : kill them.

Do you really think that a black widow is an appropriate pet?

I think you should say goodbye to charlotte and her kids. Release them far, far away from human habitation.

Sheesh... the fear mongers around here...

A few facts about black widow spiders:

1) The bites are rarely fatal in adults because the bite delivers very little venom.
2) Males and juvenile black widow spiders are usually harmless
3) The eggs in the sack may not be fertilized leaving them unviable

> I'd say you get the terrarium and release Charlotte and her spiderlings somewhere far out in the country.

The best advice given.

Oh yeah... I had forgotten about that...

the eggs may not be fertile anyhow. Seeing as how you don't have a male in there with her (if you did, she probably would have eaten him before the time was right to mate anyhow), It's likely the eggs are infertile.

I wouldn't rely upon that, I'd still release the spiders far from your house (far away is important, spiders are territorial and may return if released close enough to home).

Make sure she doesn't get pissed off at you when you release her, when they're irked, black widows are willing to chase you down. They've chased me across my back yard once or twice. The ire of a defensive mother is impressive.
