Do you ever find yourself worshipping material objects?
    #23627938 - 09/09/16 03:49 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Since my Ducati blew up, I've been back to riding my Fireblade:

She hasn't had a look in for a while, but we're old companions (7 years almost), and we've been through so much together; 185mph, two crashes, countless close calls, and more thrills than you'd get living in a theme park for a year.

Last couple of mornings, out with a smoke, I've found myself stroking and embracing this machine, a feeling of pure love flowing between it and I. This isn't the first time this has happened; I've stroked and talked to her before. And I'm faaaaar from the only biker/petrolhead that does this with his machines. In fact I have said before that I want to be buried with my arms wrapped around this machine when I die, and if I ever die on it, you can guarantee that would be my all time favourite way I could leave this world.

There's also my altar. I didn't really realise that it was one until we lost slothie recently and I burned a candle on it for her:

None of those things are worth anything to anyone but me. But mean a lot they do. Sentimental objects have been in my life as long as I can remember, and they touch me deeply. I've had to learn to let go, because when you lose one the pain can be immense, but none the less I do worship them.

Does everyone do this, or is it just me and the rest of the weirdo's out there?

--------------------
Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Thats pretty cool jokeshopbeard, i can see how they could be special only to you, and each object has its own unique story.

I have a little bit of hording of objects. I have several containers filled with cheap, silly rave "jewelery" and rave toys. It holds a special place in my heart, cause i love raves and i loved all the times i had with those silly toys i made/modified. Ahhh, good times. I just cant think of throwing away my cherished past.

I also "baby" my audio equipment, namely my PC, mixer, and turntables.

I'm probably fairly guilty of worshiping my car... and spending ungodly amount of $$ on it.
It's a passion. Or some people would call.. obsession

I dunno man, it aint a question of money, more of love. That's why I ask the question. If you don't give that shit to material objects, good for you; I think it's the better stance. My wife always used to say how she couldn't understand that about me; how, for a man so spiritually connected, I held on to material 'things' so tightly...

Other than my bong literally the only thing I care about is my plants. My brugmansia in specific cuz I've had her for 4 years now and I've put more love and effort into that plant than anything else.

Do also mean like jewelry that you worship because there's story behind it? Like it's from your dead grandma or something? Or just materials you bought yourself?

I mean anything material. Doesn't matter where it came from, it could be a rock you tripped over or a special stick (I have two of those on my altar).

But the point is, a feeling of intense connection between something not living and yourself..

Yes much like that. Mine is a variegated cultivar so even the foliage is attractive. She got yellow flowers like that but more creamy less vibrant. Very rich sweet delicate fragrance, especially at night.

I could sit beside that plant all day. Actually tomorrow I'm gunna get faded on oxy and do exactly that. I need some sunshine and those plants have a strange aura about them that's so deeply peaceful.

Totally get it man. Fucking enjoy that tomorrow if we don't chat before then, it sounds beautiful, and I agree about the energy of plants. Old trees do something.. special for me.

Plus the smell. I was growing a Jasmine plant up the fence of my old house. The smell that plant gives off can be described as nothing less than enchanting...

Man old trees warm my heart. In my city some fuckhead let a construction company bulldoze 2 ginkgo biloba trees that were over 80 years old. Who in their right fucking mind allows that to happen? I was so pissed I filed an official complaint with the city and and the construction company. They overlooked a river and it was absolutely my favourite place to go think and they cut them down to build a bridge. There is absolutely zero justification for not building the bridge 20 feet to the left so the poor trees didn't need to be axed. This was 2 years ago and they still haven't finished the bloody bridge so every day I'm reminded how out of touch with nature people are. Those were living fucking fossils for fucks sake.

Someone for whom money means more than whats right. I wonder what % of humans can be bought out of their morality? My guess is a lot, most even.

I can't wait to visit the states as soon as I can (was supposed to be this month, but I've had to push my visit ahead a year and go to Aus in Dec instead); you guys got some of the oldest living plants/trees in the world. Just to lay my hand on one, and meditatively clear my mind would be the biggest honour I can think of right at this moment. Do you have more 'connection with nature' type stories to share?

I hate to say it, for fear of propagating the stereotype, but I've hugged a couple of really old trees in my time and been blown away every time. I really must be a true hippy at heart, even though I look like the antithesis of one..
