Do you ever find yourself worshipping material objects?
    #23627938 - 09/09/16 03:49 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Since my Ducati blew up, I've been back to riding my Fireblade:

She hasn't had a look in for a while, but we're old companions (7 years almost), and we've been through so much together; 185mph, two crashes, countless close calls, and more thrills than you'd get living in a theme park for a year.

Last couple of mornings, out with a smoke, I've found myself stroking and embracing this machine, a feeling of pure love flowing between it and I. This isn't the first time this has happened; I've stroked and talked to her before. And I'm faaaaar from the only biker/petrolhead that does this with his machines. In fact I have said before that I want to be buried with my arms wrapped around this machine when I die, and if I ever die on it, you can guarantee that would be my all time favourite way I could leave this world.

There's also my altar. I didn't really realise that it was one until we lost slothie recently and I burned a candle on it for her:

None of those things are worth anything to anyone but me. But mean a lot they do. Sentimental objects have been in my life as long as I can remember, and they touch me deeply. I've had to learn to let go, because when you lose one the pain can be immense, but none the less I do worship them.

Does everyone do this, or is it just me and the rest of the weirdo's out there?

--------------------
Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Thats pretty cool jokeshopbeard, i can see how they could be special only to you, and each object has its own unique story.

I have a little bit of hording of objects. I have several containers filled with cheap, silly rave "jewelery" and rave toys. It holds a special place in my heart, cause i love raves and i loved all the times i had with those silly toys i made/modified. Ahhh, good times. I just cant think of throwing away my cherished past.

I also "baby" my audio equipment, namely my PC, mixer, and turntables.

I'm probably fairly guilty of worshiping my car... and spending ungodly amount of $$ on it.
It's a passion. Or some people would call.. obsession

I dunno man, it aint a question of money, more of love. That's why I ask the question. If you don't give that shit to material objects, good for you; I think it's the better stance. My wife always used to say how she couldn't understand that about me; how, for a man so spiritually connected, I held on to material 'things' so tightly...

Other than my bong literally the only thing I care about is my plants. My brugmansia in specific cuz I've had her for 4 years now and I've put more love and effort into that plant than anything else.

Do also mean like jewelry that you worship because there's story behind it? Like it's from your dead grandma or something? Or just materials you bought yourself?

I mean anything material. Doesn't matter where it came from, it could be a rock you tripped over or a special stick (I have two of those on my altar).

But the point is, a feeling of intense connection between something not living and yourself..

Yes much like that. Mine is a variegated cultivar so even the foliage is attractive. She got yellow flowers like that but more creamy less vibrant. Very rich sweet delicate fragrance, especially at night.

I could sit beside that plant all day. Actually tomorrow I'm gunna get faded on oxy and do exactly that. I need some sunshine and those plants have a strange aura about them that's so deeply peaceful.

Totally get it man. Fucking enjoy that tomorrow if we don't chat before then, it sounds beautiful, and I agree about the energy of plants. Old trees do something.. special for me.

Plus the smell. I was growing a Jasmine plant up the fence of my old house. The smell that plant gives off can be described as nothing less than enchanting...

Man old trees warm my heart. In my city some fuckhead let a construction company bulldoze 2 ginkgo biloba trees that were over 80 years old. Who in their right fucking mind allows that to happen? I was so pissed I filed an official complaint with the city and and the construction company. They overlooked a river and it was absolutely my favourite place to go think and they cut them down to build a bridge. There is absolutely zero justification for not building the bridge 20 feet to the left so the poor trees didn't need to be axed. This was 2 years ago and they still haven't finished the bloody bridge so every day I'm reminded how out of touch with nature people are. Those were living fucking fossils for fucks sake.

Someone for whom money means more than whats right. I wonder what % of humans can be bought out of their morality? My guess is a lot, most even.

I can't wait to visit the states as soon as I can (was supposed to be this month, but I've had to push my visit ahead a year and go to Aus in Dec instead); you guys got some of the oldest living plants/trees in the world. Just to lay my hand on one, and meditatively clear my mind would be the biggest honour I can think of right at this moment. Do you have more 'connection with nature' type stories to share?

I hate to say it, for fear of propagating the stereotype, but I've hugged a couple of really old trees in my time and been blown away every time. I really must be a true hippy at heart, even though I look like the antithesis of one..

Over the recent long weekend I ate some acid with a really close friend and spent all dam day in the forest and we met some cool people at a swimming hole, it was really nice to see how many people (dozens) had showed up to enjoy the river and the forest. Granted there was litter everywhere cuz we are too entitled to clean up after ourselves but for a moment I had felt so excited at how much everyone was obviously enjoying that moment in time, in nature. Me and my tripping buddy sat there people watching and talking about some deep shit, we nearly slept under the stars we wanted to be in that forest so long, that river has been flowing long before I was born and will continue long after memory of me has all disappeared. The area is rich with game and is so gorgeous it looks like a fairytale and you just know people have been swimming there as long as people have lived in this area. For a solid 3 hours I didn't see a single person with their face in their cell phone. Everyone looked so happy.

Amazing. Thanks for sharing that man, I absolutely love reading things like that. Just hearing about people not being on their phones in the midst of nature is amazing, look what I saw when I looked, and then looked back again 10 mintues later up a beautiful mountain in Scotland:

I know about the magical feeling in nature whilst tripping, I've had so many. Me & my wife ate shrooms on xmas day once and broke into the grounds of this massive ex-royalty type estate near us. I swear to fuck if a bunch of faires flew out around us is wouldn't have surprised me, it was that magical:

(Pics don't do it justice of course)

Fucking tragic to hear about the litter though, it fucking breaks my heart, although I can't hate people for it as I was a litter bug at 18. I try and clear it if I see it these days though, making up a little at a time for the damage I once did. Funny how age does that to you. Older friends often mentioned that it does when I was much younger, but until you feel it it's hard to conceptualise the sadness it creates to see the perfection of nature shat on by humanity.

BTW, if you have, or ever have, more stories like that to share, please do. If for no one else but me. PM/thread/whatever. I could even call you next week if you feel like reliving a few - I got time to spare @ work & free international calls..

The problem is, it kinda is. As I'm sure Shroomism knows, getting a new shiny part for your pampered vehicle brings a lot of happiness - it's just very fleeting is all. I think the only reason it runs deep with my bikes is because of how many times we've been on the edge of death/danger+adrenaline together.

You must be doing a good job at sarcasm there, cause I normally can't spot it for shit. I know we've had our run ins akira, but I do respect your opinion. I often wish it was a lot more succinct and easy to understand though, for your views often elude me.

I just rebuilt the table and fence system on my contractor saw to turn it into a more legit Woodworker's tablesaw and I'm in love with it at the moment. Never going to be as good as a quality cabinet saw or anything but I've done an amazing job really pushing this thing to it's limit for accuracy. Maybe if I dropped 150~ on a true woodworking blade and dampener I could get it nearer to a quality cabinet saw but I dunno and that's a lot to drop on something that may not work. As it is I've got a deviation of far less than 1/64 of an inch off square, maybe as low as 1/100 or something. I've still got some adjustments and refinements to make to dial it just a bit more too (just hadn't made them yet because they weren't necessary at the moment I'm still working on some things that don't require ultimate precision).

I hadn't noticed until trying to move onto more precision stuff but the top to my saw was bowed in near the blade throwing off my cuts a considerable amount. Up to 1/16 off square or so, something had to be done about it and I didn't know if I was going to be able to get precise enough to make it better. I took my time on it (a few days) and am thoroughly impressed by the results. The fence it came with was only about 2 1/2 inches tall and clamping finger boards or anything to it was a pain in the ass. It wasn't a very solid fence, either so I really beefed it up. 4 inches tall, 3 inches wide and solid as hell. I also made the table about twice as large as stock, and have plans to add a foldable extension onto that for even more surface area when needed. Just don't need it yet so haven't done it (already have the materials for it).

I'd say that fits in with your description because I love the damn thing and no one else who even bothered to read this probably even sees what the big deal with it is  The trickiest part of it all is I didn't want to lose a lot in depth. If I had just used some 1/2 inch plywood for the top it wouldn't have been nearly as hard to get a nice flat surface. But I went with 1/4 inch (which is actually only 3/16 inch) for the top. There's a lot of shimming and leveling that had to be done (still some to do).

If I end up stuck with this saw for more than a year or two I'll be transferring the motor system out of it completely to a full on cabinet. I just did the top only for now to save some money since I don't actually need a full on cabinet.

When I was in high school I vandalized a sign at school and they made me clean up trash around the campus for an hour after school every day for a total of 20 hours. Normally I woulda said fuck that but they called the cops and had me arrested, the cops said they wouldn't charge me and have it go on my record if I just sucked it up and did the 20 hours of cleanup.

As any teenager would be I was pissed as hell and day 1 had the worst attitude, then randomly enough the custodian who followed me to keep me on track was a really nice dude who had a lot of interesting viewpoints on a lot of things and he made it actually fun. Because of him turning that into a positive experience for me I never littered again. It also opened my eyes to how much is in on the ground. You don't realize until you're the one cleaning it up.

Ever since then I made a point of cleaning up once or twice a summer my favourite places to think about shit. It feels good to make a difference like that even if it's small. I really should, we all should, be doing it more often. That swimming hole for instance you couldn't pay me to swim in, my poor dog had his little paws torn to shreds on the glass in the water. I mean littering is one thing but breaking glass in an area of such high traffic is just fucking rude and dangerous.

And thanks for that offer man I'm not usually one to talk on the phone but it's super nice of you to offer that. I'm more likely to shoot you a :pm: but I'll keep your offer in mind

Tell me about it...
Just got this from a good friend.. 2016 Golf R, 24k miles, 30k worth of mods already on it, pretty much to the teeth.
It's the exact car I wanted... and he modded it exactly how I would have... saving me a lot of time/money.
And I'm still CONSTANTLY thinking of more ways to further mod it. Have already spent waay more than I should have.

It's a sickness. But a good one

Amazing. I have no idea what you're talking about but your passion speaks volumes. I met a guy 2 weekends ago that built some mad... what would you call it.. alter/mantle in a massive house in America recently. Out of one of the best woods going apparently. African something; can't recall, was tripping hard on mescal & 2C-B. But the pics were mindblowing. The level of accuracy you mention is what reminded me.

I mean, I've done a bit of woodwork in my time, built the bed for my wife & I. Learned joints at a job I had for a short time. I was ok, but inaccurate. I guess it takes years to learn that accuracy you talk of. I can try my hand at most things but wood kinda pisses me off for some reason. It has the grain which is random, and needs to be worked with. Metal is much better to work with for me.

That's a bitch man. I worked up about Β£28k in my 20's cause of that attitude:

Built from standard, but every area modified to fuck. I still have to resist, but having more of a respect for money after getting into, and out of, that much debt makes it easier. I.e - a manifold for the Duc would be Β£7-800. That wouldn't have stopped me once, but now it does. Β£700 ($930) is a lot. I still want Ohlins and Brembo though, I guess that'll never change. As a petrolhead, sure you know how it gets in the blood, in your very soul.

But to resist is so good for us. Still gotta admire your new car though. Don't think I coould ever have bought pre-modified. Probably now though if I was still into cars as I don't have time to do the work myself anymore.

What's the power figures & 0-60 on that?

Love the corner balanced stance, it's funny to think how most people have no idea how important those coilovers are perfectly set to balance the vehicle. I paid a pro to set mine, camber, castor, toe, etc:

Yeah I kinda figure not many people would understand what all I'm saying or it's importance. For general cabinetry and stuff, the accuracy isn't super important. I mean you don't want to see obvious gaps but they're easy to hide or compensate for. For a lot of the stuff I want to do though, you need precision that is hard to measure without special tools (meaning more than just a ruler or tape measure). To get that precise some of the shimming I did was done with index cards and paper because I didn't feel like breaking out the hand plane (it needs tuning) to make shavings of wood thin enough to shim it up.

I love what I do though. Well a lot of it anyways. Like anything else there are aspects that have to be done that I really don't care for. I'm really not a fan of sanding for instance. It's just a chore to me.

As for the African wood, there are several that it could be. Wood sources have been drying up for quite a long time. A lot of the exotic woods take a long time to reach maturity and some of them don't even become very large trees to begin with. I think those two aspects are especially relevant to African woods. Some of the exotic woods out there are getting so rare that it's difficult or nearly impossible to find as actual lumber because they're mostly just turned into veneers. I can't recall it off the top of my head but my local hardwood dealer just got some of the lumber not too long ago and I started looking into it.

Do you do that for a living then slip, or are you a self-taught hobby expert, like myself?

@Sonic - I dunno if you can call music material any more - fuck, there's like 32 billion songs in the cloud or something. Certainly not something one can touch, as soul stirring as the stuff is (I would have to exit this life if it were outlawed for example, I listen all day). The thought makes me miss tapes and CD's though..

BTW - if I seem unusually chatty tonight, it's probably cause I got some fire coke for the weekend, and had to sample a little before bed today of course. Just in case anyone thought I was acting out of character. Probably not, people keep asking me if I'll ever stop posting, I probably talk too much as it is...

Trees and plants are indeed very powerful presences that deserve to be preserved, but I would'nt consider them material objects in that they're alive and have resident genii.  Material objects i have which one could say i worship are certainly my stuffed seals and pandas, xj-s, some artwork, ritual tools, pistol, and some books.

Oh yeah, trees/plants = definitely NOT material, rather, a living thing. There was a large plant strewn across the road yesterday when I got to work, dunno what it was, but it had been abused, so I stopped, re-potted it and tried to hide it somewhere some so the Thursday night, pissed blue suit city wanker wouldn't just kick it over:

Doubt it'll be there tomorrow, but heartbreaking to think it's probably gonna end up in some bin.

Stuffed seals and pandas - like taxidermy? I used to stare through a specialist shop window near a pals house every now and then, fascinating stuff if that's what you mean. XJ-S = Jaguar?

I must confess I have a great fondness for Periodic Element 79, GOLD.

Its not about that it's worth a lot of money, it is the history humankind shares with Gold and the many symbolisms, spiritual and earthly, surrounding the yellow metal.

It is the Chalice of Christian Mass, the Kiddush cup of Judaism, it is the dome of the Islamic Mosque, it is the death mask of Tutankhamen, it is holy in every religion that knows it.

Of Gold, my most favored form is the Krugerrand:

Good call Asante, I knew you'd have something cool like that if you chipped in. Gold is definitely special. I imagine you haven't enough of the stuff to have one of those bars sitting round though!

I heard at one point during the economic shit that went down people were buying it up cause it ain't gonna devalue. Bollocks to that panic buying though, I'd also be all about the history of our relationship with it (never even considered it before but now I think about it, back to Egyptian times, it's always been very.. hallowed). I normally think about flint when I think of humans on the brink of starting civilisation as we know it.

Do you wear gold due to your connection, or have any special bits? I could never pull off gold, goes against me somehow, but stone works in harmony and I haven't been without a bit on round my neck or wrists for probably 7-8 years.

Lol. I think he's probably 15:30, cause I'm 14:30 and almost certain Holland is an hour ahead (I should know, lived there for 5 years).

I gotta sleep and be up for night shift in 7 hours and the clock is ticking. But I've broken my recent resolve and done stims for the first time in months, and the thought of bed is like 'yeah, fuck that'.

Better get the emergency diazepam out I suppose. Will try with vodka first, I don't feel like drinking, but it's the smoothest way out of the stim headspace and body load IMO.

Oh yea, meant to direct that post at you since you were talking about going to bed. Makes sense though if you work night shifts. Did that for about a year myself. Wasn't fun.

Just realized I haven't really contributed to the thread, but while I don't really worship any material things, I definitely have possessions that hold a lot of sentimental value for me. Certain pairs of shoes, my switchblade, my studio monitors, my first car (which is now completely fucked and I gotta get rid of it), a few little things that are gifts from close friends. Wouldn't say I worship any of it. I don't think I've ever really "worshipped" anything in life besides perhaps some music.

Its 15:42 now, why?

Even if I had the wealth for bars of gold, I would want krugerrands instead, even though that is more expensive per ounce. I prefer it for many symbolic reasons, one of them being that the Krugerrand unites the fates of Holland and Africa.

Half the world lives on an ounce of gold a year, in the West, an ounce of gold a month is survivable and if you have an ounce of gold a week you are middle class in the West.

I don't wear gold but have been thinking of capping my back tooth (invisible) with a gold crown (it needs a crown and a gold crown is almost the same price as a ceramic one) for the purpose of being physically in contact with gold, always. I'm still deliberating it.
I dont want a visible gold tooth, it doesnt feel right to show off to people, its immodest in a really rude way.

What kinda stone are you wearing?

I think the music position is probably the most widely worshipped thing for most, after a romantic partner (which is mind blowing, but world destroying if you lose them!).

I imagine it would start to divide a bit more, dependant on gender after that, but who knows, I just waffling at this point I think. Surprised you mention a car and don't at least tell me make/model. I'd love a pic!! I must be the most vocal petrolhead currently in the community, with Shroomism just behind.

Would also love to see the rest, but vehicles are my thing, above all else.

@ALL - If you ever talk vehicles, please be pornographic about it! Ima start handing out supporter accounts soon I've decided, and vehicle porn would definitely earn one. In fact I'll start right now - hex, if you do me a pic I'll send you and account tonight!

My paintbrushes and pens. It's one of my most favorite feelings of dry painting my face. I have never splurged big money on anything for myself except brushes and pens. I use coupons tho but one of my favorite ones was a $35 brush and I got it half off.

And I might have a small amount of worship for things I collect... like my sticker collection. And probably books..

It's far from an impressive car, a '99 Chrysler Sebring, it just holds a lot of sentimental value for me. Lot of memories cruising around doin crazy shit with my friends when I was younger. I don't think I have any old pics of it and it's in bad shape these days or I'd put up a pic. I'll try and find one though. I really didn't take care of it like I should've and it makes me sad seeing it how it is today.

Ive always loved cars but I'm not really a fanatic/enthusiast like some. I really hate my current car too, an '07 Saturn ion, but it's decent enough I guess and I got it cheap from a family member so I really shouldn't complain.

What kinda stone are you wearing?

Dunno, it's from a beach in Jersey. My wife brought it back as she went to visit her dad there a few days after we first got together. Our spiritual connection was so strong at the time, I saw her in a church in my minds eye at one point, pulling on the bell ropes - turns out that was exactly what she was doing. I'd love to ask how, but I feel some things are not meant to be known in the human state.

Maybe someone else knows. I bought a diamond drill bit and drilled the holes out so I could wear it, just felt right. It's very hard stone, the white maybe quartz? I tore it off when she first pulled the 'final straw' move that sent her into rehab, along with my wedding ring. And whilst I can't see myself wearing the ring or us being together ever again, this stone is just so 'me' and represents SO much to me, so I don't feel it is linked to her. I made it a part of me, even though I know I and it are impermanent, I hope to journey with it as long as possible. No doubt I'll lose it at some point, mind you.

Yeah, that looks like a boring AF car. Sometimes that's what you need though, mine kinda is (compared to my early ones anyway, it's still powerful). I never spend >Β£1000 on a car these days, and run them into the ground. I like comfy, auto, and inconspicuous. After riding a bike every day, the last thing you wanna do it apply the same level of concentration and effort in a car. Bet she's comfy, right? Good speakers?

Mate, that's what the forum is for aint it? Like at a good festival; you know you can just chip into any conversation you hear and know that it's cool.

Well, that's the ideal anyway, only takes one bad egg to kill the vibe, but please, interrupt the fuck out of any thread I start. That's why I do it! More people that get involved the happier I am.

Comfy enough, decent speakers. I wanna drop some cash on a higher end sound system, get a couple 10" subs in there or something. But yeah, definitely a boring af car. I'm tempted to sell it and get something else that suits me better. I'm thinking I might just keep it and save up for a decent motorcycle. I wouldn't mind having a lame ass car if I had a sick bike

Exactly. See the pic I posted above, with the white car and the sick bike in the background. I'd been riding about a year when I had that reaisation, and became an 'all weather' rider (only snow stops me). My next cars were shitheaps, although mechanically sound after I sold that white one. I think one cost me Β£280, and the boot was full of water, windows wouldn't go up etc when I got. A Honda Accord (always go Honda) fixed her up myself and drove her into the ground. And I got Β£120 for scrap when done. Sweet AF, I miss that car, it wasn't the gas guzzler that mine is. Only reason I can afford to keep is cause I only drive it once a week.

Cars are great workhorses IMO, and I would always need to have access to one from time to time, but since laying out the money on a goretex suit and all I ride everywere now, no matter what temperature. It's so much beteter. I really didn'y ever see myself feeling that way in all the years I dreamed of having a bike, but it really gets under your skin after a while. I know... 0 bikers that currently ride that are not passionate about it, regardless of how little some actually ride.

Can you do oil changes and shit? Would you be willing to learn? It saves so much money and hassle, and I'm amazed at how much I now know compared to when I felt nervous doing my first oil change 10 years back...

Ah subs. I've been seriously contemplation getting an amp and subs in mine. Had them in all my good cars. It's finding the time to run the cable up the car that stops me - I never have a full day any more. But even though I;ll prob be selling her in 6-9 months, I would if I had time.

LOUD music when driving is almost as good as sex. People must think I'm bonkers when I'm raving to D&B in my car, whole body moving, one hand in the air out the window, in the classic rave/hand pose as a tune drops...

Normally, I would almost never buy a pre-modified car. But.... this guy is a good friend (in my car group). He works for a big name performance car parts place.. he knows his shit.
All the shit was professionally installed by the same shop I trust all my stuff too. All the mods are the top dollar ones and are all done right.
It's basically exactly how I would have modded the car myself.... only it would have taken me like 3-4 years to do.

Right now the engine is being rebuilt with better pistons, rods, new rings seals and gaskets and bigger turbo and custom tune. That was part of the deal.
Before it was pushing around 400HP, with all the new internals and big turbo... it will probably be somewhere in the ballpark of 470. 0-60 in under 4 for sure.
And yeah it's corner balanced

Me and my tripping buddy sat there people watching and talking about some deep shit, we nearly slept under the stars we wanted to be in that forest so long, that river has been flowing long before I was born and will continue long after memory of me has all disappeared. The area is rich with game and is so gorgeous it looks like a fairytale and you just know people have been swimming there as long as people have lived in this area. For a solid 3 hours I didn't see a single person with their face in their cell phone. Everyone looked so happy.

Think of all the pokemon they could have caught out there!!! Seems like a waste of a trip to a swimming hole if you have no pokemon to show for it.

Fucking sweet man. I was gonna part-ex the EK9 for a 550hp R32 Skyline at one point. When a turbo like that finally spools, it's like being shot out of a cannon. The purist driver in me says always NA, but the thrillseeker says fuck that, huge turbos are fucking majorly grin inducing. Superchargers lay in the middle, and whilst they're great (went out in a charged EK9) they're just.. a bit gay, somehow.

Plus, a 500hp NA engine is the realm of supercars, which I'll never afford. But I have supercar performance for reasonable money, which is mostly the motivation of bikes for me. I kinda shot myself in the foot with the Fireblade though - with the cam & headwork it's just too fast for the road. With all the dangers you gotta watch out for - been knocked off twice - both t-bones on my right, I rarely get it out of 2nd. On an open stretch though, with the quickshifter & GP gearing setup (basically full throttle gearchnages, by just tapping your foot down on the shift lever), it's fukcing insane. Like a slice of heaven. You got a couple of roads you feel safe to open up?

I have one stretch, which is my top speed stretch if conditions are perfect (as they sometimes are). Had a police car chase me down it at 150 once, but I had no idea cause my head was flat on the tank. I should have lost my license for that - thank fuck the cop rode a Fireblade too, and I've had years of practice speaking to them..

Ah car groups. I loved my EK9 group, all met through the EK9 forum. I made a bunch of friends at various meets, and it eventuated in about a dozen of us going to the Nurburgring (where that pic is from). Probably one of the top three 'long weekeds' of my life. Amazing how well you can bond with people if you are passionate about a common interest - even people you would not normally get on with..

How often do you meet your group? Do you go to big meets/RR days/track days etc together?

I've been trying to find time for a track day on the bike a couple of years now, but I don't have a group to spur me on - the only riders I know are 44 & 52, and very hard to hook up with. Get about 1-2 rides for pleasure alone a year.

If you're doing more than that, then you're doing alright man.. I think you got a little nipper (kid) though right?

I think that's the most balanced opinion I've ever seen on the matter. If you truly live that ideal, and have few wants, then I congratulate you for being and enlightened human.

Mind you, if you earn quite a bit, and have never truly had to scrape for money (as I, I've made making sure I have plenty of money since 15, and my parents were never poor growing up) I think it's easier to think like this.

I sometimes question if coming from the 'middle class' in the best start point one can have in this life. I've met people from upper and lower, and they seem like they'd be a lot harder to break the cycle with...

You know it was my wife that sowed the seeds of starting to thing this way about possessions. Buy the cheaper version, not the top of the range (I have an eye for quality, and it often hits me in the pocket) Coupons, store cards, etc. Every penny counts kinda shit. I used to be so careless generous with my money, and I'm still generous when friends need help (if they'll accept a gift gracefully - an art it took me years to learn - and one I still see others resisting like I did for 90% of my life), but saving a few quid there and a few quid there, and accepting a gift generously, knowing it'll all balance out, really makes a difference.

And to think, her dad was a multi-millionaire, and she never wanted for anything when she was growing up. I think having all the material she ever wanted but still being abused by every member of her household showed her very early on that it's not about that.

Why do terrible things happen to good people? She turned all her pain inwards, and just learned to fool the world that it wasn't there, when it was eating her up. For someone who went through the worst childhood I've evr heard of, she still shined line a star because unlike 90% of the people I know that had shit childhoods, she turned it inwards, rather than against the world thet harmed her, like her bitter, people repulsing sisters did...

Sorry for the rant, typring his out right now is helpig me to refkect and heal.

I don't know why good people go thru such hell sometimes. Or just bystanders or anyone for that matter. I'd like to think there is some soul or karmic reason and that we might have chosen these things ourselves for some kind of understanding and experience. That we somehow chose this life because we knew we could handle it. But many people cannot. Or maybe they are just done with the experience and that's all they needed. I don't know.

What is inside always leaks out. And I've found that the inside people are probably more destructive than the outside ones. Because after so long you just snap like a rubber band. And it's not until you deal with it does it ever get resolved. Not until it comes out. I find most people really don't want to hurt people even if they project it out. Some do, yes, but not most. There is a rage in all trauma and it doesn't really matter the way it comes out to me, it's there. But the inside people still hurt those around them. I use to hurt myself all the time when I had post pardum. I used to think that because I wasn't hurting anyone else no one would feel it. But they do. It's an energy. It can lay dormant for a number of years while they pretend everything is ok, put on a happy face and smile at the world. Try to love people and make them happy. But you can feel it deep in there. It's always there until you face it and put it in its place.

Fuck now I am going on with your reflections and mine!!!

Anywho, I've always been poor or lower middle class. I'm frugal and hate spending money unless needed. I don't buy things that wouldn't last long usually. I did when I was younger and didn't know better. But cost and sustainability. Buy something that can be used for a long time with the less money you can. I also don't have anything fancy that would crush me to lose honestly. I like the little things that I have. But even if my brushes or collections got ruined or my pens ran out of ink I could just replace them with the same ones.

I did have a big of a sales problem with useless stuff though.... but that was years ago and I've been getting rid of stuff continuously and got rid of a ton more things that I thought I would use but never did before my move. Plus alot of people liked to shower things on me in case I needed them or could utilize them.

Trees - I like your lab stuff!! How do you mostly utilize those things?

I've got hundreds of plants, some are extremely rare.
Such a money pit.

When one dies it's extremely depressing to me, I have grown way too attached.
Many are seed grown, although some were purchased mature.

I finally stopped buying new ones so I can focus on new hobbies and keep the current ones healthy.

Now the same damn thing is happening with mycology lmao, oh well. At least mycology is somewhat cheaper to get started with.

I hear you about that bike. I would LOVE to have one (mainly for that lane splitting in traffic) and that crazy power and the "freedom" I also hear about from riders.
I never really got into them though... and I feel its a little late at this part of my life. Plus I live in Socal and people are retarded around bikes.

My group is awesome. It's a VW/Audi group mostly but all cars are welcome at meets.... though its usually all VWs/Audis.
We have a facebook page we use to talk shop/plan meets etc... about 1000 people strong. Not that many people show up at meets though.. usually around 10-20 people at our normal meets.
They have meets and cruises ALL the time. There's a big all-day monthly cruise where we meet up, like 50+ cars strong... drive through LA, carve through all the mountain canyon roads and end up at Malibu.
There's regular meets we have two to three times a week. And then there is smaller local cruises people set up randomly.
Then there is track days.... and local car show events where we usually come as a group.

I only manage to make it to a meet once every two months or so as I'm so damn busy these days. And yeah got a little ripper now. He's 2 and already obsessed with cars

It really makes a huge difference being part of an enthusiast group. I thought I knew a lot about cars before I joined but I've learned 10x more since.
Plus made tons of new friends from it and made some solid connections. Living in Socal helps too... the car scene is alive and well here.

We like to bitch about how EU VWs ALWAYS get the good stuff and US spec ALWAYS get the shaft on features. Drives me insane.

Example: On the EU spec Golf R: Panoramic sunroof, electric automatic folding side mirrors, LED tails, opening center console, better headlights, choice of wagon, list goes on.
US spec Golf R: NO sunroof period, normal side mirrors, shitty halogen tails, LOCKED and unopenable center console (it's a 4 minute mod to get it to open... but still WTF)... silver housing headlights while EU gets black housing, no choice of wagon. No spare tire. Smaller infotainment screen.

Virtually everyone upgrades to the EU spec LED tail lights because they look so much better (those are the ones in the pic I posted).. and they are pricey as fuck (like 900). Should come like that from the factory.
It's just so many little things that we get the shaft on, it's fucking annoying. I would love to live in EU just to get the better featured VAG cars since that's ALL I drive.
Plus you guys get new cars from them that we get teased over here... and 95% of the time they never come to US. For example we haven't a scirroco for YEARS. I'm jealous.

I worship my body which is strange since it's mortal. But if we look at the body as a vehicle, then it's materialistic and in turn I treasure it.

I'm sick of all you hypocrites
Holding me at bay
And I don't need your sympathy
To get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on boy, no time to cry
Untie these strings, I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away

Do you do that for a living then slip, or are you a self-taught hobby expert, like myself?

I'm attempting to turn it into my own business, yes. I started back in school, I needed a second elective and it was the least objectionable one. I didn't really have any interest in it but found out I really enjoyed it and had an innate skill for it. It became the only class I liked. Wanted to continue after school but I didn't have the money for all the tools and just kinda forgot about it over the years. Then a year ago or so I decided I wanted a tortilla press (because I cook as well) and all the ones in my price range were either prone to breaking or were so thin they would bend around the dough and were useless. I noticed they used to be made out of wood and decided I could do just build one for cheaper, which reignited my love for woodworking.

So here I am. Up until very recently I've just been doing mostly prep and trying to get my shop set up. I've done a couple of things in between that were done for the money. I took a commission for a bookcase from my wife's coworker which was the first official thing I sold. I restored a china cabinet that was my grandmother's and just sold it a week or two ago actually. Right now I'm working on a bench made from logs I cut up myself. That's in between stuff like building the top for my table saw and finished building my drill press yesterday (but found out I'm going to have to spring for some oak dowels and in a larger diameter so it's now "unfinished" again). I built my wife a jewelry box for her birthday in there somewhere and will soon be starting on a project for a friend's birthday. I'm not really to the point yet where I'm just focusing on stuff to sell, but I'm getting closer.

Some of the stuff mentioned:

(That is just a rough layout so I could figure out how everything was going to go together)

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way.
I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today.
Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.
I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear.

You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being
With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline
