peyote grafted to Trich.
    #2334434 - 02/14/04 03:31 PM (13 years, 10 days ago)

hey yall

finally got the balls to slice down one of my largest pedro's and put it to a better use. I selected the biggest one I had for the grafting. THe pedro I chose was over two feet tall and over 4 inches thick in diameter. I made two cuts, one cut was about 6 inches below the tip of the cactus so the tip could be re-rooted. The next cut removed the middle portion of the cactus which was about a foot long and weighed a few pounds. The middle piece was for eating with interesting effects following a couple hours later.

Now all that was left was a 'stump' of the cactus, which was to be the grafting platform. The exposed cut of the cactus had somewhat healed during the night so I re-cut the flat calloused area to a slanting upwards shape. Then made a straight even cut where the vascular ring area was. Then I took the peyote and made a straight cut right through the base of the cactus. I took the cut peyote button and matched it up with the pedro's vascular ring. The peyote was lightly pressed down to set it in place and push out any air bubbles. Then I took soft nylon strands and secured the peyote firmly to the pedro stock.

and there you have it  I just did this yesterday so there is still a chance the graft could be re-jected but I think it will take. Before I attempted this graft, I started out with my smallest pedro and peyote and grafted them together as a test to see if it would work. That was a couple months ago and the graft took, you can see it circled in red in the second picture. I never used sterile cutting tools or iodine for either of my grafts.

the only flaw I can see is this tiny air space made by the knife when it slipped. dam

Its generally a bad idea not to graft to the growing tip of the cactus, as it has fresh vascular fluids to help make the graft stick to the stock better. The further down you cut, the harder the center of the cactus gets and it gets kinda 'wood' like, not making a good surface for the graft. Hopefully you get lucky, but next time I would advice grafting to the tip of the cactus.

so how much faster will a peyote grafted on a trich grow than if peyote was growing alone?

Well a small button can reach maturity after 1 year grafted on a pedro, while a button in the wild could take like 8 years or so.

yeah i really noticed that the core gets alot more woody the farther you go down the cactus. Grafting to the tip would be ideal but in this case I only had the bottom part to work with. How can I tell if the cactus is rejecting the graft? will it die?

thanks. how long does it take a peyote seed to reach the size of a small button?

If the graft fails to survive, it will start looking bad within a day to a week. Sometimes they struggle for a while then die. It will just basically rot right off of the san pedro.

It looks like it was a decent size, and size is the bigger factor for me when I've done grafts (I've grafted probably around 12 times, around 8 were successful, all the ones that failed were smaller than 1 cm. But I always used iodine and sterilized everything.

And if you start from seed you could graft anytime you want, if you graft to somethink like a periskiopsis then you gotta do it while the seedling is still small and it will grow unbeleivably fast...otherwise I would say to get to a good grafting size something like 1 year is enough.

A lot of times if your graft is rejected youll notice a root system emerge from the button. It happens a lot of times when you only have a small section of the two rings intersecting. Thats the best case scenerio though. In that case, you can just pop it off and root it.

how cool, some art going on!
yup bro, the first one is way too low!
once i did the same mistake but an areole has managed to link itself somehow to the vascular tissues and a pup came out of a dead button. surprising indeed because i expected nothing already!
you better regraft while you can than to take the chance...

If the heart is to woody it won;t work. Normally you can realease the pressure after 36 hours and it will be alright.... if not than try again.
