You should love those even though they hate you?

Love thy enemy.  Because to defeat your enemy you have to know your enemy. And when you really know your enemy, get inside their head, think they way they do and adopt their perspective you become your enemy and then you cannot help but love them in the way you love yourself.  And that is the moment when you can crush them.

It really is an ill-defined term, isn't it?  So you have opponents and proponents arguing for and against it while using different definitions.  That is known as communication breakdown.

yeah, when i think of spiritualism i think of the late 19th/early 20th occult revival movement. and i think the new age movement started in the 60's and was revived in the 80's and 90's (along with another resurgence of interest in the occult). but i think both are appropriate labels for what we're talking about here. unless there's another name for it. is there? genuinely curious if there is.

Well I think people just like to get revved up about shit
A lot people who argue against God's existence forget that the term "God" is sort of mistranslated. The meaning of Atman in hinduism is much different than "God" at least the way that Abrahmic traditions typically relate to it. And even at points in the Bible God is described to be much different than the way christians understand it
And those who argue for its existence fail to realize that an entity beyond comprehension is most likely far beyond any of your conception etc. Existence is a very easy to comprehend term, and hence God would be beyond it

Also; in regard to spirituality, atheists/commonplace secular people generally have the idea that these new age people are trying to practice religion while distinguishing themselves from the religious folk
The "spiritual" folk themselves often fail to realize that putting a label on truth and labelling yourself as "awakened" tends to reduce your ability to view the world objectovely. Also, truth is logically "non-dual". So to label yourself as awakened and others as non-awakened makes you sort of a hypocrite/dumbass

Plus, being awakened isn't about talking about being awakened and using crystals. It means almost nothing if you are not right here right now. Like I said, most of these new age fucks don't even understand what they are saying in regards to this topic. they just like to label themselves a particular way and feel distinguished

The other day, someone was like "do you believe in the existence of God?". Mind you I go to a jesuit college, so about 5-10% of the people there are devout catholics. The rest are rich white folk
Anyways, I said "Define 'God'? And my answer would depend on how you define 'existence'". People in the circle just got provoked and started calling me a dumbass
And another time, someone asked me my lifting routine. I mention that I do yoga every other day and lift every other day. One dude said "Are you spiritual? ALL spirituality is bullshit. Yoga is pointless and is glorified stretching. Are you spiritual?"

WTF does that even mean bro?
This attachment to words clearly indicates an obsession with labels and dualities. A huge problem in and off itself because those who do it don't even realize how retarded they sound

But anyways, all this discussion and heated debate is over a word. A label. A series of sounds I make with my mouth. A series of symbols I type on my computer. What is up with that?

Do I believe that there is more to life than what we often acknowledge of directly experience? More than simply going through the motions? Fuck ya. But does that mean the meaning of life is to meditate and do yoga? Fuck no. Does that mean that enlightenment is a realisitc concept/goal in a lifetime? Possibly. The key is to stop obsessing over words and getting arrogant. Just critically think for a second people...godamn

God is most powerful when you claim not to see him, not to hear him, and not to speak with him. My spirituality is trying to be as silent as a grave.

god's a complicated problem. it really depends on the tradition you're referring to. the christian model - or at least the orthodox model - promotes the view that god is the transient cause of the world; god has created the world, the world is imperfect whereas god is perfect, therefore the world and god cannot be the same. my objection to this model of god revolves around the question of having to create two realities in order to account for one. i understand the reasoning for a transient god, and some of the arguments, like descartes', are simply beautiful in their rhetorical intricacy. but, i don't buy it.

god becomes more interesting to me when he is imminent. as you've mentioned topdog, the main branches of hindu philosophy promote the view of god as imminent, namely the brahman. the atman - as you've mentioned - is the individual (but not separate) aspect of the brahman that is sheathed in individual bodies. there's disagreement on the atman's relationship to the brahman within hinduism. a particular view i find interesting is one that promotes the view of the atman being distinctly particular from the brahman, even though the brahman is still imminent.

the work of baruch spinoza - a heretical jew - promotes a similar view as hinduism. god is the universe, and everything within the universe is just a mode of god. spinoza's work particularly helped form the religious views i currently hold.

but then you have what is called process theology. that is, god is a process that unfolds through time as our understanding of him grows. i don't know much about this version of what philosophers refer to as "god talk", but it is nonetheless interesting. this would be based on the work of alfred north whitehead, if i'm not mistaken.

point is, god is a big subject with a lot of different points of view. all of them are interesting to me, even if i don't believe them. i don't even know if i believe in god. i would describe myself as an agnostic monist. agnostic as in i don't profess to have any direct knowledge of the existence of god, and monist in that i believe that if there was a god, his nature would be imminent rather than transient. i also fully reject christianity's miracle of "the god man" jesus christ, although gnostic interpretations of christianity seem to echo my beliefs about the individual's essence, or soul, to the divine aspect of reality, which is similar to that brahman/atman concept that hinduism and spinoza seem to promote.

OP's ignorance is a sign that he needs to cleanse his crown chakra. I suggest painting your face with lavender & basil essential oils & meditating on St. Germaine.

Repost, but:
Quote:
(religion and spirituality and God)
i think it stems from the inability to reconcile the inner consciousness (the mind -- thoughts) and the outer reality (physical being -- external).

one day you were doing fine, and then all of sudden, little did you know, you caught a minor cold, and now you're dreaming about being possessed by demons.

maybe that's where this notion came from? a physical response to this inability -- the mind honing in on ailment.

maybe we are already "possessed", by "daemons", the intellect. maybe we are already "possessed" by consciousness, and we could not reconcile the notion of this "consciousness connection" with the external world of being; thus the notion of a Godhead, the notion of being disconnected from "consciousness" as a physical "thing" -- of being separate from the internal notion of consciousness; as a "servant" to it -- as opposed to realizing it's just all you.

my response to that is that i would tend to agree that ideas about god originated in wanting to understand the natural world. the turkish city of miletus was the home of thales, who, by most accounts, was one of the first pre-socratic philosophers. in response to the mythology of hesiod from the previous century, thales sought to explain the world in terms of causation by natural law. this began a debate over the nature of the arche, or the first principle from which the world emerged. thales seems to argue for the arche as being an infinite, water like substance.

:lolwut:

I just did a shitton of yoga and meditation in an attempt to counterattack my depressive thoughts. I found it helped me. What the fuck does that have to do with reconciling the inner conciousness?

I am not really seeing where you are going with this one. PErhaps I misinterpreted what you said?

"sound" is a logic term that indicates all of the premises in a valid argument are true. you would have to include the premise that the world has a first principle, which is in itself an inference. so no, it's not a sound argument. but it is a valid argument in that a first principle seems to follow from the existence of the world.

lol, you took it the wrong way Hunter S. no need to worry about inviting demons into your subconscious through meditation and yoga. LOL

i'm just explaining a pathology.

in otherwords, according to what i had said, you could also say that dreams and the unconscious mind 'spawned' the notions we invented to create the Godhead --- whatever that implies in real & true nature.

no, i mean, literally, sound. or to be more apt, vibrations.
