Who's "Happier"? : Spiritualists or Non-Spiritualists
    #10290214 -

The question is pretty straight forward. Do you think "Spiritualists" or "Non-Spiritualists" lead "happier" lives? The reason I quote each of those is because I think each may need defining; I think each person who replies should define those terms on their own.
Who is "happier"?
You may choose only one

I have mixed feelings bout this one,It really depends on the person.
Spiritual people are a bit more open so negative emotions and feeling may be felt in a more direct manor. Someone that lives a closed life as I would say, may be very happy because being unaware can be a blessing.

I don't belong to religion nor do i know if god even exists.  I still consider myself a spiritual person even though i don't know what god is or if god is real.  It's really hard to explain but I am in touch with spirituality even though i believe that my existence is (almost) all that really counts.

I don't think question is black and white, there's a lot of gray material...

I used to be a hardcore atheist but psychedelics softened my atheism into more of what I like to call a "scientific transcendentalism."  I'm definitely happier with an optimistic, more poetic view of the universe than I was with my belief that none of this shit really matters for anything and that reality is completely random.

Spirituality isnt about sole happiness. Thats not the role it fills in cultures. Spirituality is hope and faith. We aren't speaking of a logical realm here either. Happiness is a chemical reaction, similar to feeling in love. Now, Im not saying the two cant intermingle, but its just not something that can be measured. Think of one in ecstatic rapture, vs a monk in dutiful piety. Anyways, Im high, and just rambling....

I think spiritualists for the most part. I don't know about the whole "GOD" thing either. I don't think spirituality is really about that anyways. Not mine anyways. I feel that spirituality is what ties us together as a species. When it becomes something that separates and divides us, I don't think that's true spirituality. Unfortunately, that's what many "religious" organizations do.

'Spiritualism,' to me, implies answers: answers to quell death anxiety, reassure us of a divine purpose behind our existence, lay out moral ground-rules for us to live by, etc. It's usually closely related with religion and religious ideals, IME.

And so I think 'spiritualists' are much happier in general. They always have their comforting beliefs to fall back on.

I don't consider myself to be 'spiritual' -- I don't even know what that means, really, and I definitely don't believe in spirits and souls -- but I don't bring myself down over my lack of answers. I think the majority need that reassurance, though. More power to them.

I think it's still relevant to the topic

I think religion is very connected to spirituality.  Religion has to do with faith and hope like you said.

All in all, i try to be a positive person and try to find good in everything but who the fuck really knows if a higher power exists.  To me, being in tune with nature is about as spiritual as one can be.  I also meditate which also helps with spirituality and outlooks on life and death.

I can really relate.  When I was younger (12-15 maybe) I had a very cynical and jaded view of the universe.

Now, partly in thanks to psychedelics, I'm much happier with my place in things.  It's sort of like someone who takes pride in their work, I take pride in my life.

Just thinking about this just now has been very therapeutic.  Been going through some weird stuff lately and been under a lot of stress, it feels really good to step back for a minute.

God is Everything, and Everything is God.  People who try to make Everything into a person/diety are silly, it seems to me.

As to the OP, I don't think you can statistically safely guess at that.  Too much depends on the person.

One can be spiritual, but not religious.
Lemme explain......
Jay is a catholic that goes to church on Sundays out of thinking he has to.
John is a catholic that goes to church rarely, but still reads his bible often and makes his prayers morning, noon, and night.
There is religious,
and then there is being spiritual.

not all atheists think that none of this shit really matters.  there is much beauty and mystery in our existence that may leave you at an aw.

That didn't explain anything. Jay and John are both religious by your example, but Jay is a phony.

I know what it is to be religious: you're following some sort of doctrine, practicing a tradition of sorts; but what does it mean to be 'spiritual'? If you believe that our life force is directed by some sort of ethereal being, a 'spirit,' then wouldn't everything we do be considered 'spiritual'? Who defines what is 'spiritual' and what isn't?

Haha dude I know, I'm still more of an atheist than I am a theist.  I haven't renounced any of what I used to believe, I've just built on it.  I started off by thinking that there is no God, and that if you wanna call the universe God fine but I'll just call it the universe.  I'm still like that.  As Richard Dawkins said, my beliefs are a sort of "Sexed up atheism."

Like it's been said in the thread before, it all really depends on the person.  I think religion and spirituality are two sides of the same coin.

I think spiritualists and non-spiritualists are equally as happy as each other.  No one will ever define themselves as anything that does not make them happy, therefore if you are happy being defined as 'whatever' then you will be happy.

The gray area comes in when someone else defines you as either.  If you do not believe you can be defined as what the other person defined you as then that won't make you happy.  Given that this other person genuinely believes you are what he defined you as s/he will then come to the conclusion that people of that definition are less happy than those of other definitions.
