Re: Hip's oven bag tek?

When I first read of this cultivating method I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread! A couple of things that impressed me about this idea were that it would be possible to sterilize bulk substrate, and the substrate being in a flexible bag could be squeezed so it was easy to distribute the mycelium. (Promoting faster colonization) These two ?features? combined would be the answer I was looking for in order to establish an easy bulk method. The experiment didn?t turn out the way I had hoped. After sterilization I removed the 4 test bags from the oven to find the substrate very dry. I tied 2 bags completely closed with a knot, and used the heat proof bag ties that came with the bags on the other 2 leaving them a little loose. All bags had little holes in them regardless of whether they were tied or left loose. Two of the bags stuck together and ripped. The one bag I did manage to save with duct tape (covering the holes) completely dried out a week after inoculation. The bags feel porous which would explain why they dried out. You might want to try placing the bags in a zip lock freezer bag to keep the moisture in?I don?t know. Until a better method comes along I?m going to keep using my jars.

Don't cross post. Some people might call you a dick. Not me though. Just don't post the same thing in more than one forum.

I tried it. Had mixed success, or mixed failure. I didn't really follow ALL of the directions though. If I did that, I'd have to re-write the whole fucking tek. It's terribly composed in my opinion.

The good part was my substrate didn't contaminate. The bad part was I didn't follow all the fine print and ended up having the substrate dry out on me after about 40% colonization. I may try it again, but next time I'm going to put the oven bag inside a ziplock storage bag after I sterilize it.

Being moist is a good thing.

We use oven bags but only for sterilisation of casing soil. Spawn is grown in jars.
The plastic that oven bags are made of is not very sturdy and rips easily.
If you want to grow in bags you should use spawn bags with a filter patch.
