Using oven bags for Sterilization and a other questions
    #914471 - 09/28/02 08:46 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hey Folks

This is my first post here, I have been lurking for a while.
I just want to say hey to everybody and please forgive this post if it rambles a bit and askes too many questions

this is a question on using oven bags for sterilization.... can they be used safely(free from contams)...has anyone here got experience using these?

The plan is to use them to sterilise the casing mix (50/50 Peatmoss and vermiculite), the ingredients will be mixed in a bowl and  bottled water added til it is just a bit over moist(to allow for drying out) and spooned into a large ovenbag, tying it tight with most of its air squeesed out. This bag will be placed into a second and tied tight with some air still in side, so if the inner bag sucks in air when it cools it will be drawing in sterile air.

I think that this will be best oven cooked at the highest recommended temp on the packaging for the bags (i think this is about 200c) for about an hour or so. Any reccommendations?

after cooking the bag will be left to cool and when it comes to using it I will squeeze excess water out with my hands(washed of course).

how does this proccess look?....will it work, has it been discussed before, does anybody have any tips for me?
also will this proccess work for preparing rye grain for inocculation?

I have heard that H2O2 (hydrogen Peroxide) mixed in a 1:20 ration with water is good from spraying casings to retard any conaminants, it this a good idea?
Can I apply it to my casing while I am building up my layers?
does anybody know where I can get it in the UK? I have heard that i can just ask for it in a chemist, will this be the pure product that I am looking for?

Sorry for all the questions, I have read quite a few FAQ's and Teks but they seem to contradict each other sometimes and I would like to confirm a few things.

Thanks in advance for any help

I don't feel that these were stupid questions, if they were then let me know.

I'm not sure about in the UK, but in the US, H2O2 is sold at just about every drug store and grocery store. It is usually by the bandaids and by me it's 3 bottles for a buck.

Well they arent exactly stupid questions but I do have a question for you....this "idea" that you had about using the oven bags...did you just come up with all of this on your own? It seems like I remember reading the EXACT same process in one of the teks that I saw on here last week. So I guess my question to you is this....if someone put this whole process in their tek why would they have gone to the time to tell you in detail the whole process if it wasn't a successful tek?

I was going to try and answer atleast one of your questions but I seemed to be confused by all of them.....oh wait I think I found one...the H202 thing. I am pretty sure you can get it at any pharmacy or even grocery store...but dont hold me to that.

I followed the oven-bag TEK and all I got was some nice bacterial contams.

Ok.
You can sterilise casing mix in oven bags, no prob. but remember if you tie it tight, when it gets hot, it will pop!
If you sterilise in a PC, dont sit it on the metal bottom, put a teacloth in for it to sit on.

>also will this proccess work for preparing rye grain for inocculation?

It does, but the bags need some form of air exchange.

>I have heard that H2O2 (hydrogen Peroxide) mixed in a 1:20 ration with water is good from spraying casings to retard any conaminants, it this a good idea?

YEs.

>Can I apply it to my casing while I am building up my layers?

you could

>does anybody know where I can get it in the UK? I have heard that i can just ask for it in a chemist, will this be the pure product that I am looking for?

Chemists, not the big chain stores tho, you will find it in concentrations of 3,6 and sometimes 9%

Good luck

thanks for the info folks

Good Point Dreamatrix! I will proceed with this tek but I will put a lump of cotton wool in the opening of the bag and tie around that to allow for air to escape while it is in the oven, lets hope it dosen't catch fire!

I will go and check out a few chemists in my area for the H2O2 tomorrow.

Loop - when you tried the oven bag tek were you sterilising substrate or casing mix?

Oh and PsilosShaman, I never once claimed that this tek was my "idea", what i did say was it was my plan. there are a lot of teks out there and I only wanted the general opinion on this one, not to claim it as my own. I am trying to improvise as I no longer have easy access to a PC so I thought I would try this as a way to prep the casing mix...no need to flame my first post....peace

many thanks

Substrate, but I dont think I had your good idea about air-exchange. Dont not try it because I couldn't make it work, I was prolly really sloppy with the whole deal.
