Acid comes in booms and busts because the production quantity is so insanely high more than one or two people making it for an area floods it.
In the 60s before it was made illegal a single German lab supplied the world.

I don't think the chem is the hard part, that bear guy from the grateful dead made it and lets be honest hes no genius, I think the hardest (and when I say hard I mean extremely hard) is obtaining the precursors and getting the expensive lab equipment without arising suspicion from the feds.

Entirely true.  The chemistry is pretty basic.  Precursors are a nightmare...

Chemistry isn't all that basic if you want clean product with 0-minimal stereoisomers. A lot of folks like to talk like it is, but none with the experience to back it up. There's a Nick Sand quote somewhere regarding this. And Owsley's girlfriend at the time was a chem whiz.

Yeah you need to take the time and effort to make a good product. I'd rather spend 20 years to make sure its absolutely as perfect as can be instead of 20 minutes to whip it up really crappy and low grade like lavender or something

This is where paper meets world, world wins.
The synthesis itself is more complex than many other drugs but still understandable.
The issue comes with the actual doing.
Some of the steps are highly sensitive, so making sure you are exact is the hard part, errors range anywhere from zero activity to poison.
Whats needed is experience using the equipment and chemicals, or someone who has that experience willing to teach you.
So yes, in fact going to school for it is the only real solution.

Edit to add: Refining the product is good, but it's not like you are going to get a little acid from a partial reaction, it drops to 0 quite fast.
