I was having a discussion the other day, and one fellow was saying that graffiti that's done on a designated graffiti-wall tends to be of higher quality and more artistic, since the artist gets the opportunity to really go over his work and make sure it expresses what he'd like it to. The other fellow was of the opinion that by taking away the illictness, the illegality and hence the necessary haste of the act it may still be art, but it's not proper graffiti. I'm not sure if the term graffiti is more indicative of the style and medium or of the circumstances of its production...

I agree with Sclorch. It's definitely art, but it's in the wrong place, although I'm glad it is where it is so I can see it.

alternatively you can have people standing at the corners giving away free canvases, like condoms to stop the terrible infection. this however is worthless, the medium is part of the expression

this was in the wrong place, a public bus and was very different from what you ussually see there.
The person that did also had a tag with a kite on one side of what he wrote and on the other side some kind of root looking drawing.
the words were printed as above

I suppose what I mean by "wrong place" is that it's illegal. Other than that, it's art, and it's great to look at. And I agree that the wrong place "helps" make graffiti the type of art that it is. It speaks for the city where it is located.

I love graffiti, and have been known to contribute to it. but all I've ever done was stenciling.
personally I love seeing graffiti on what would otherwise be blank, meaningless walls. And if the squares dont like it they can piss off

hahahahahaha
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Well, what about those who are putting it on the "blank" walls of residential houses? Business?
And it's not artistic, just their "gang's" name.
I guess the question begs to be asked: Is "all" graffiti, art?

well, I admit its not cool to tag some little old lady's house, but I think government property and things like stone walls are fair game.
I really wish more people would consent, and or consider graffiti as an exterior design style. I think it would be cool to live in an apartment building that was all tagged up, if it was done well. They have buildings downtown with huge murals on them. thats cool.
I used to print out this image I made and polypaste it up in all kinds of places. This image was in my sig for awhile:
Its all about expression

Maybe it comes down to taste, or preference.
I don't mind seeing graffiti where it doesn't make the city look like shit, such as along the sewer, where there are no houses. I mind seeing it on houses and buildings. It tears down property values and overall makes the area look bad. I don't care how "artsy" it is.

I would much rather see a wall covered with some drunken gang member's scrawled tags than a blank concrete wall. The stupidest thing I've seen is when people paint over graffiti with a slightly different shade of grey than the canvas the tag was put on. When I see a wall with ugly little squares of poorly selected colour, I feel like I'm looking at a brain with little spots of repressed memories and feelings.
