ok, if there is an idea that is being thrown around, that says it is fact, then the skeptic is going to question how valid that statement/idea is (bad grammer I know :wink:).

this is my own definition, but the dictionary offers up some really specific examples (neat to ponder over anyway)

1) skeptic:  a person who maintains a doubting attitude, as towards value, plans, statements, or the character of others ^_^

2)skeptic:  philos: a member of the philisophical group in ancient greece, the earliest group of which consisted of Pyrrho (hehe pyro???) and his followers, who maintained that real knowledge of things is impossible  :shocked:

what do you guys think of this?

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

This forum might as well have "Spirituality, Philosophy & Etymology" in it's title...left and right people are defining and re-defining words on and on alot lately.

Maybe we all need to take some refresher courses back in English. :smirk:

Oh, and I looked up the word Skeptic in my dickshunairy, and all I found was Swami's picture next to it. :grin:

Actually, even when confronted with the evidence at the time by comparing hospital wards where hands were washed and antiseptics used vs. those where such practices were not undertaken, many doctors still refused to believe in germs because they could not see them and/or it did not fit with what they believed.

A skeptic is a person who demands proof before concluding that something exists (unlike a theist.) A skeptic is not a person who refuses to acknowledge phenomena that become evident (like germs) but rather a person who evaluates available evidence and sticks to the rational over the fantastic when it comes to explanations. It seems that people on this board are too often using the word skeptic as if it were an insult to be rational and demand proof of things.

Specifically, when it comes to the issue of god, I don't think it's a skeptcal view to say that god does not exist, I think that given the complete lack of evidence offered up by theists, that it is a realistic position to have. If you want to make outlandish claims such as "there is an invisible entity somewhere in the universe that rules us all," then the burden of proof is on you to make your case. It is not my responsibility to prove that the world is in fact as it seems.

I have been talking to someone lately who believes something, that to my way of thinking, just doesn't make sense. But I have to let her believe what she believes, because who am I to say?

But it helped me to understand how people must think when I tell them, ferverently, what I believe.
