Spectabilis vs Junonius

So, what's the deal here. Are the names interchangeable? Is one a subspecies? Was spectabilis the name until someone realized that the taxonomy was described earlier by a different name? Is it just to annoy us? And what's the deal with luteus? Is it a subspecies of Junonius/Spectabilis or just in the same clade?

No. Gymnopilus junonius (=Agaricus junonius, Pholiota junonius, Gymnopilus spectablis, and Gymnopilus subspectabilis) is the "new" name, replacing Gymnopilus spectabilis. All of the above names are describing the same species of mushroom.

It has been formally described using multiple genera and species names. Mycologists can use (part of) the earliest description and name when this happens, which is Gymnopilus junonius (=Agaricus junonius), described by Fries in 1821. You can read all the different descriptions and share them if there's any doubt.

At some point, it was moved out of the genus Agaricus and the genus Pholiota (and Fulvidula) and into the genus Gymnopilus, as it shared enough macroscopic and microscopic features in common.


DNA evidence also supports a relationship between Gymnopilus junonius and other Gymnopilus species.

G. luteus was not included in the DNA study above, nor in the SVIMS key. H.R. Hesler mentions G. luteus in his Gymnopilus monographs and reminds us that it seems to be closely related to G. junonius. More DNA analysis is needed, along with photographing collections, to place G. luteus in a clade and to determine its relationship to G. junonius. For now, treat them as separate species which may be proven to be the same species in the future.
